New York – The director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization (Unesco), Irina Bokova, has called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council this Friday (27th) to discuss protecting the cultural heritage of Iraq.
Bokova decried the attack by the self-declared Islamic State (IS) on a museum in Mossul, Iraq. The Unesco chief said this was an action against Iraq’s millennial history and culture. She called the action an “incitement of violence and hatred.”

Bokova said: “This attack is far more than a cultural tragedy – this is also a security issue as it fuels sectarianism, violent extremism and conflict in Iraq.”

The Unesco director-general stated that the action was in direct violation of Security Council resolution 2,199, which condemns the destruction of any cultural heritage whatsoever.

Besides, the document adopts mechanisms to stop the illegal trafficking of historical pieces and objects coming from Syria and Iraq.

Unesco states that statues that were at the World Heritage Site of Hatra, as well as historical artifacts of Nineveh, were destroyed or damaged by the terrorists of Isis at Mosul’s museum. According to news agencies, some of the pieces destroyed dates from the 9th century.

The region under the rule of Isis in Iraq shelters almost 1,800 of the 12,000 archeological areas of the country. The destruction of the statues occurred after a terrorist group set fire on a Mosul library, which held more than 8,000 old manuscripts.

“The systematic destruction of iconic elements of the rich and diverse Iraqi heritage that we have been witnessing the last few months is intolerable and must cease immediately”, says Bokova, according to the UN website in Brazil.
