The museum rarities include handwritten and old printed publications of the 17th - 18th centuries, lifetime books and private belongings of Belarusian classic writers, manuscripts, books with autographs, exlibrises, rare items of iconography, photomaterials of the 19th - the early 20th centuries.

The museum is the largest literature museum in the country. It deals with literature process documenting in a wide historical context. It is situated in one of the buildings of the Troitskoe Predmestye, which is an architectural monument of the 19th century. It was founded on 6 November 1987, and opened for visitors in 1991. The materials revealing the life and work of famous Belarusian writers are kept and demonstrated in the museum. There are a great number of exhibitions, among them: «Vasil Bykov. The Path Defined by Destiny», «Guardians of Poetic Skies», “Poet from Naroch Land», etc. 

The museum collection consists of more than 50,000 items. The museum realizes numerous exhibition and educational projects: «Diamonds of Beautiful Writing» (to the 100th anniversaries of the Belarusian writers), «Regieny» (popularization of literature and artistic heritage of the Belarusian regions), «To the Museum with the Entire Family», «Through the Distance of Centuriesj... A.Mickiewicz and A. Pushkin», etc. The museum takes part in various international projects, collaborates with literature museums in Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, etc. The museum includes the following affiliates: the estate museum of the Mickiewiczes’ “Zaosye”, the estate museum of F. Bogushevich «Kushlyany», the literary museum of K. Chorny.
