The museum is based on the Moomin books by Tove Jansson. So far, they have been translated into over 40 languages. The books fascinate adults and children alike. The original Moomin illustrations by Tove Jansson are an essential part of the atmosphere of the museum, and the three-dimensional tableaux built by Tuulikki Pietilä add to our own picture of the goings-on in the Moomin stories. The gem of the collection is a blue five-storey Moomin House that is as exceptional as its residents — and its builders, Tuulikki Pietilä, Pentti Eistola and Tove Jansson.
Wisdom, humour, a healthy love of adventure and warm geniality have made the Moomin books speak across language barriers. That same atmosphere can also be felt at the museum. The exhibit is being renovated, respecting the life’s work of Tove Jansson.
THE ADVENTURE HOME
This exhibition list tells a story about an adventure, a journey, and returning home. Moominvalley blends routine and adventure; familiar safety and unexpected dangers. Even the smallest creatures have their own adventures on their journey in the world, as well as in the complexities of their inner universe.
Without question, the main character of Moominvalley is Moomintroll. But without Moominmamma, Moominpappa, and all the familiar and strange characters that the Moomins meet, there would not be a story to tell… That is how important even the smallest little bugs are in Moominvalley.
The illustrations have been selected from the collection of 2 000 original works by Tove Jansson. Some illustrations are very delicate and are shown in a special black room with dimmed lightning. Some rare works can only be seen in Moominvalley museum. Three-dimensional tableaux complement our imaginations with regard to the events of the Moomin stories.
