"Dry Lives" denounces social neglect and human exploitation. - “Vidas Secas” denuncia o descaso social e a exploração humana

In two brief paragraphs - those that open the first chapter, Change -, the Alagoan Graciliano Ramos synthesizes Dry Lives. Describes the scenario and presents the saga of the dog Whale, of the mother Sinhá Vitória, of the father Fabiano and his two children, who, in the course of history, are called "younger" and "older". Without name and surname, they carry the "identity" of the families that still live today the social neglect and the human exploitation in the Country.

In the reddish plain the jujubes enlarged two green spots. The unfortunates had walked all day, were tired and hungry. Ordinarily they had little time to walk, but because they had rested a great deal on the sand of the dry river, the journey had been well over three leagues. They had been looking for a shadow for hours. The foliage of the Juazeiros appeared far away, through the bare branches of the sparse caatinga.

Slowly, Sinhá Vitoria with their youngest son in the room and the sheet chest on his head, Fabiano, somber, swindling, took him by the shoulder, the gourd hanging from a belt attached to his belt, the flintlock in the shoulder. The eldest boy and the whale dog went behind.

Written in 1938, the narrative that reflects the aridity of the sertão opens a window to the reader. The author's aesthetic predicament gives freedom to anyone who wants to start the story of the end or the middle or the pages they choose. Each of the 13 chapters has its own plot. The aesthetics of the novel proposes no end or beginning. Thus, the writer, among the most important of the second modernist phase, draws the life of the sertanejo in a circle. Or a spiral. Like a living wheel.

To reflect with the reader engaged in the readings for the college entrance examination, the Journal of USP interviews Thiago Mio Salla, doctor of letters and communication sciences and professor of the School of Communications and Arts (USP). "In addition to the demands of the proof, the expectation is that the vestibule be fascinated by the beauty of the text of Graciliano, who, like a meticulous craftsman, carving and putting in sequence the pictures of the life of Fabiano, Sinhá Vitória, The Whale, the boys' dog, "Salla notes. "At the same time, it resonates the voice of all these characters along with their own voice of narrator, through a concise, substantive language. At the same time, I hope that the readers of the book will be sensitized to the strong social message that gives life and relevance to the book. "

"This is not a typical novel about drought, but about dry lives."

"More than the drought caused by the inclemency of nature, what would oppress Fabiano and his family would be the relations of domination established by the men themselves," Salla explains. "This is not a typical novel about drought, but about dry lives. Lives presented in all their complexity as part of a systematic process of exploitation, humiliation and alienation. In short, from this mixture between the artisan's word and the problematization of such vivid wounds of Brazilian reality, the artist extracts his strength, which enhances him and places him as one of the main artists of our literature. "

Thiago Mio Salla studies the life and work of Graciliano Ramos 15 years ago. A survey conducted at the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB) of Universidade de São Paulo, which has the guard of the writer's collection. This work has already resulted in seminars, exhibitions, articles and several books, among them Garranchos - Unpublished Texts by Graciliano Ramos (Record, 2012), Conversas, in partnership with Ieda Lebensztayn (Editora Record, 2014), PhD in Brazilian Literature by USP, And the recent Graciliano Ramos and Political Culture: Editorial Mediation and Construction of Sense (Edusp).

The teacher makes a point of presenting the box with the manuscripts of Dried Lives that is in the IEB and at the disposal of the researchers. "Here is the first chapter he wrote: Whale," he says, pointing to the original text with the author's spelling and penmanship.
Graciliano writes:

"The dog Whale was about to die. He had been emaciated, his hair had fallen on several points, his ribs loomed on a rosy background, where dark spots oozed and bled, covered with flies. "

The book, according to the researcher, began with Whale, written on May 4 and published in The Journal on May 23, 1937. "The author determined that this first chapter was the ninth in the sequence of the novel," he explains.

"The reader may realize that narratives can indeed be read independently."

The researcher recalls that Rubem Braga classified Dry Lives as a "collapsible novel" in relating its fragmentary character. The reader can choose to read chapters independently. However, the order that the writer organized has, according to Salla, his reasons. "The way Gracilian articulates the chapters confers oneness to the whole. I think they lose strength if read separately, especially when one considers the character at once kaleidoscopic and cyclic of the work. That is, the family runs away from the drought at the beginning and end of the book. "

Another manuscript that the researcher highlights is the cover of the book that should be titled The Covered World of Feathers. A document in which one can observe the drawing of the letter of Graciliano Ramos scratching and changing for Dry Lives. "If he gave the book the first title, which prevailed until the eve of its publication, the writer would emphasize more the status of a story than a chapter of each of the divisions of the work," he explains. "This is because, metonymically, he would choose the name of a part to name the whole, a very common procedure in the titling of story books.

In addition, if he opted for The Covered World of Feathers, a section that deals with the preparation of the family to leave the ranch, would make a more restricted reading of the life of the sertanejos, privileging only the ingrained fatalities and fatalism in the northeastern backlands. On the other hand, when choosing Dry Lives, his only title adjectivado, chose a name capable of encompassing all the narratives and give unity to the whole, highlighting the precise and well structured architecture of the whole.

The title chosen, as explained by Graciliano Ramos himself, highlights the "miserable existence of work, struggle, under the glove of implacable nature and human injustice." The researcher points out: "Dry Lives embodies very well what in my opinion is the great legacy of Graciliano: the conjunction between formal rigor, introspection and problematization of different social themes such as misery, exploitation, humiliation , Among other ingredients that make up a very brazen cauldron of conflicts, about to explode. "

“Vidas Secas” denuncia o descaso social e a exploração humana
