The Pokrov is the most important holiday of the golden autumn, it was associated with the end of field work and the beginning of winter, waiting for the first snow. The people tried to insulate the house and restore order. It was believed that such is the Intercession, so is winter.
In the Don Cossack villages, the Pokrov was celebrated especially solemnly, as it was during these days that the Don Army Day was celebrated, and the feast of the 12th Don Cossack regiment. Mistresses baked pancakes, remembering that if on the Pokrov bake a lot of pancakes, then the house will be warm throughout the winter.
This time in the old days was traditionally the time of weddings, and the girls prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary about a happy marriage.

Исторически такая традиция была приурочена к чудесному поражению турок под Азовом (Азовское осадное сидение 1641 г.). Когда казачий гарнизон изнемогал от долгой и неравной борьбы с врагом, была явлена «Пресвятая Богородица в багряной ризе», которая вселила надежду и вдохновение на победу.
Покров – самый главный праздник золотой осени, его связывали с окончанием полевых работ и началом зимы, ждали первого снега. Народ старался утеплить дом и навести порядок. Считалось, что каков Покров, такова и зима.
В донских станицах Покров праздновали особенно торжественно, ведь именно в эти дни отмечался и праздник Войска Донского, и праздник 12-го Донского казачьего полка. Хозяйки пекли блины, помня примету, что если на Покров испечь много блинов, то в доме всю зиму будет тепло.
Эта пора в старину традиционно была временем венчаний, и девушки молились Пресвятой Богородице о счастливом замужестве.
В произведениях М.А. Шолохова, где ярко изображен уклад жизни донского казачества, неоднократно упоминается и праздник Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы. Вот лишь несколько примеров из романа «Тихий Дон»:
