It is called The Other Side Of The Mirror and is the new temporary exhibition of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, curated by Maria Rosa Figueiredo and the collaboration of Leonor Nazaré.
The exhibition, which will be open to the public until February 5, 2018, "explores the presence of the mirror in European art especially in painting, but also in sculpture, photography, cinema and book art."
From the Other Side of the Mirror presents 69 works, from the 13th century to the present, from various private and public collections, from various European countries, such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Reina Sofia Art Center, the Center Pompidou, the Fitzwilliam Museum , the Tate, the Musées de Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux and Lille, and national museums such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum itself, the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Chiado Museum, the Grand Vasco Museum, the House of Stories, the Museum University of Coimbra and collections such as the Caixa Geral de Depósitos or the Berardo Collection.
The exhibition is divided into five thematic centers: "Who am I?". The Identity Mirror; The Allegorical Mirror; The Woman in front of the Mirror: the projection of desire; Mirrors that reveal and mirrors that lie; The Male Mirror: Self-portraits and other experiences; and "aims to show how artists have used the infinite visual possibilities of mirrors and their ability to lead to other dimensions of spirituality, illusion or even nightmare."
And it includes works by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, George Romney, George Varanda, Simon Vouet, Jan Sanders van Hemessen, Ana Vieira, Justus Juncker, Ambrose McEvoy, Paula Rego, Jan van Eyck, Quentin Metsys, Eduardo Luiz and photographs by Cecilia Costa and Noah Sendas, Wladimir Lukianowitsch von Zabotin, Harold Gresley, Richard Hamilton, Daniel Blaufuk, among other artists.
According to the curator of the exhibition: "Although the most obvious purpose of the mirror is the faithful representation of appearances, reflecting a coherent view of the world, many artists have favored ambiguity and fragmentation, for purposes often philosophical, to the detriment of mimetic representation of reality, "and it is this vision / relationship that is intended here to show.
The exhibition can be seen at the Temporary Exhibition Hall of the Foundation's headquarters until February 5, 2018, from Wednesday to Monday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased locally and cost 5 euros for the exhibition.

Do Outro Lado Do Espelho Para Ver No Museu Calouste Gulbenkian.
Chama-se Do Outro Lado Do Espelho e é a nova exposição temporária do Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, com curadoria de Maria Rosa Figueiredo e colaboração de Leonor Nazaré.
A mostra, que vai ficar patente ao público até dia 5 de fevereiro de 2018, “explora a presença do espelho na arte europeia sobretudo na pintura, mas também na escultura, fotografia, cinema e arte do livro”.
Do Outro Lado Do Espelho apresenta 69 obras, do século XIII à atualidade, oriundas de várias coleções privadas e públicas, de vários países da Europa, como o Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, o Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, o Centre Pompidou, o Fitzwilliam Museum, a Tate, e os Musées de Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux e de Lille, e de museus nacionais como, o próprio Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Museu do Chiado, Museu Nacional Grão-Vasco, Casa das Histórias, Museu de Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra e de coleções como a da Caixa Geral de Depósitos ou a Coleção Berardo.
A mostra está dividida em cinco núcleos temáticos: «Quem sou eu?». O Espelho Identitário; O Espelho Alegórico; A Mulher em frente ao Espelho: a projeção do desejo; Espelhos que revelam e espelhos que mentem; O Espelho masculino: autorretratos e outras experiências; e “pretende mostrar o modo como os artistas usaram as infinitas possibilidades visuais dos espelhos e a sua capacidade para conduzir a outras dimensões, de espiritualidade, ilusão ou até de pesadelo”.

Segundo a curadora da exposição: “Embora a finalidade mais óbvia do espelho seja a representação fiel das aparências, refletindo uma visão coerente do mundo, muitos artistas favoreceram a ambiguidade e a fragmentação, com propósitos muitas vezes de ordem filosófica, em detrimento da representação mimética da realidade”, e é essa visão / relação que aqui se pretende mostar.
A exposição pode ser vista na Sala de Exposições Temporárias da sede da Fundação, até dia 5 de fevereiro de 2018, de quarta a segunda feira, das 10h00 às 18h00. Os bilhetes podem ser adquiridos no local e custam 5 euros para a exposição.
