CHICAGO, United States (AFP) — Seated onstage at a museum near Chicago, Adina Sella talks about her life as a Holocaust survivor.

A group of young school kids is entranced — all the more so because Sella is not actually there.

Her likeness is being beamed in the form of an interactive and moving hologram, part of a first-of-its-kind exhibition debuting this weekend at the Illinois Holocaust Museum, which aims to preserve accounts of a fast-disappearing generation.

“She has their undivided attention,” teacher Samantha O’Neill of Chicago’s Northside Catholic Academy said.

“It really does look like she is sitting on the stage in front of you.”

The exhibit uses voice-recognition technology and machine learning to let visitors ask questions about survivors’ World War II ordeals and hear answers that grow more relevant with time, as the technology learns.

Thirteen Holocaust survivors, most living in the United States, but also from Canada, Israel and Britain, were recorded for the exhibit.

They answered thousands of questions, each sitting for about a week of high-definition video recording.

“It prepares us for the day when our survivors will not be here,” the museum’s chief executive Susan Abrams said.

The Nazis murdered some six million Jews, and millions of other people, in the Holocaust. As survivors age, organizations are grappling with the dilemma of how to preserve their stories.

Movie director Steven Spielberg in 1994 established a foundation that video recorded 55,000 testimonies of Holocaust survivors and witnesses.

His organization eventually became the Shoah Foundation, a part of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. And it is that group that teamed up with the Illinois museum to create the holograms.

Realistic interaction

The project took nearly three years. Survivors were seated in the middle of a half dome studio filled with high-definition cameras and lights to capture them from multiple angles.

The finished product makes its world premiere Sunday, and offers a real-time conversation with the likeness of a survivor. Early tests of the $5 million exhibit have been encouraging, Abrams said.

“Audiences feel even more comfortable asking their questions to the hologram, because they’re not worried that they’re going to hurt somebody’s feelings or make them upset. And so, this has really been a powerful tool,” she said.

In the museum’s auditorium before Sunday’s debut, dozens of elementary school children listened as Sella sat onstage in a red chair. The occasional sputter of her projected image was a reminder that she was not really there.

“How old are you now?” one child asked.

A museum facilitator repeated the question into a microphone, and the technology powering the hologram offered a corresponding answer, recorded in such a way that it would remain relevant forever.

“I was born December 1st, 1935, and so please figure out,” Sella answered with a heavy accent.

The children quickly did the math and realized she was 81.

‘Experienced globally’

The museum, as with other institutions dedicated to the Holocaust, still holds regular in-person talks with survivors — a group known as its “Speakers’ Bureau.”

One of the leaders of that group is Aaron Elster, who also was one of the first to sit through the hologram recording process.

“Most of us are concerned that within a short period of time when we’re gone, what happens,” Elster said.

Would survivors become a historical footnote, “or are we still alive, in essence, to tell people what happened?”

“We feel it’s really important. We want our families to be remembered,” he added.

The museum plans to eventually license the hologram project to other institutions, so they can also create exhibitions.

“We want this to be experienced globally,” Abrams said.

The institution emphasized that the holograms are merely a part of its exhibition entitled “Take a Stand Center.”

Geared toward school children, there are also touchscreen panels featuring historical and contemporary inspirational figures, among them Nelson Mandela of South Africa and teen activist Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan.

"Experiente globalmente"

Russian artist, FYODOR PAVLOV-ANDREEVICH will perform as Lenin naked in São Paulo, Brazil.

Public can interact with Fyodor Pavlov-Andreevich in 'Prove me I am like you', in Sesc Consolação.

In the centenary of the Russian Revolution, a Lenin very different from the imaginary was exposed for five days at the Solyanka State Gallery, a museum turned to performance in Moscow. The Russian artist and director of the institution Fyodor Pavlov-Andreevich, who since 2008 is divided between Moscow, Rio, São Paulo and other cities of the world where he travels with his work, lies naked for hours, representing the body of the Bolshevik leader in the performance "Prove me I am you" in your mausoleum. In his new work, the performer invites the audience to interact with his body, which acts as a musical instrument: the more intense the touch, the louder the music. The performance arrives in Brazil from November 6, at Sesc Consolação, in São Paulo, with a track composed by Arto Lindsay and the international collective Atelier Playtronica, with the possibility of premiering in Rio de Janeiro in 2018 as well. (Jamie Lewis Hadley, PASHIAS, Rafael Menôva, Anguloomo Mba Bikoro, Evamaria Schaller, Clarissa Sacchelli and Guta Galli) selected by the Russian himself.

- During the performance, the body is no longer mine and becomes a work of art. In a museum, one can not touch paintings or sculpture, performance is one of the only artistic possibilities in which interaction with the public is not only allowed but becomes part of the work itself - notes Fyodor in a telephone interview from Moscow. - The result of the performance here was incredible, the public reacted in a totally unpredictable way. I am very anxious to take work to Sao Paulo because the public will be broader. As the museum here is performance oriented, the public already knows what to expect.

The artist is not afraid of more extreme reactions from the public, after recent incidents involving events such as the "Queermuseu" exhibition, canceled in Porto Alegre, or the performance "La bête", in which a child interacted with the performer Wagner Schwartz, who was naked in MAM-SP. In Sesc Consolação, the indicative classification to be adopted will be 16 years, with explanations on the content of all performances before entry.

- We want to work on these issues, open this dialogue with the public. This type of freedom of expression restriction is not exclusive to Brazil. In Russia we also had several problems like this, it also happens in other countries in Europe and the United States. Performance has this characteristic, of raising questions, of helping people to seek answers - explains the artist.

Curator of Fyodor's performances, Ana Avelar believes that, due to the moment of exalted moods, the performance can generate new debates, but also sees the possibility of reaching the public in another way.

- It's curious, because last year Fyodor did a naked performance in the same MAM and there was no controversy in this sense. We know that, at this moment, some sectors of society shift the focus from the attention to the arts, as a weapon of political campaign. But this also offers a possibility to discuss some of these taboo themes, because they are all wide open. And in the "Carousel", the public will have a unique approach with the artists, they put themselves in the physical limit to establish this contact with the viewer - highlights Ana.

For the curator, one of the aspects that most inflamed the mood in the case of Schwartz's performance, is precisely one of the elements that the Russian works in his performance: the condemnation of the male nude.

- If it were a naked woman in MAM-SP, the repercussion would be different, because the female body is objectified, it is as if it were public. The male body is the representation of power, and when a man is naked and vulnerable to the public, society does not accept - Ana compares. - The performance acts precisely to destabilize these social rules. These works make it clear how permissive we are with a certain type of nudity, but we condemn nudity within a specific space.

Fyodor also uses the body to draw attention to other issues. In "The Abandoned Child," the artist "donates" his body in a glass box at gala events, such as the dinner at the São Paulo Art Biennial (2016) and the Met Gala in New York this year, in which the Russian was arrested and received four criminal charges. In "Temporary Monuments," he remained for seven hours hanging on a crane at the USP Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) to address contemporary slavery. A subject that gains a new dimension in Brazil, after the attempt of the Ministry of Labor to change the rules for characterization of work analogous to the slave, whose ordinance was suspended by the STF.

- Russia now has about four million slaves, many from former Soviet republics such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. They are people who live and work in degrading conditions, to send money to the family, and who recognize their condition. In Brazil, often people in this situation can not even perceive themselves like this - comments Fyodor. - Often issues such as degrading work or racism are incorporated by society without people noticing it on a daily basis, to those who come from outside is more evident.

The ownership that addresses central themes of the country is further evidence of the ties created by Fyodor almost a decade ago with Brazil:

- About 30 percent of my time divided between Moscow, Rio and São Paulo, and the rest I travel the world with my works, I need to take my body where I go to work. But today I consider myself more Brazilian than Russian. It is like a person who feels that he was born in the wrong body, more and more I realize that this is my culture, my people.
