An exhibition dedicated to contemporary fashion in Africa’s major cities.


“Fashion Cities Africa” is the first major exhibition in the United Kingdom to celebrate and examine the growing contemporary fashion scene on the continent.


Fashion Cities Africa, an upcoming exhibition at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery will explore practices of dress, fashion and styling in four major African cities – Casablanca in Morocco, Lagos in Nigeria, Nairobi in Kenya and Johannesburg in South Africa. The exhibition is hailed as the first of it kind in the United Kingdom (UK) and it will celebrate the contemporary African fashion scene.

The Brighton Museum and Art Gallery is in possession of an important collection of historical African textiles gathered between the years 1880 and 1940, and Fashion Cities Africa develops on this collection to investigate contemporary fashion in distinctive African metropolises.


“There’s been a surge of interest in contemporary African art and design in Europe and the United States in recent years, but this is the first major United Kingdom exhibition dedicated to contemporary African fashion. We want to reveal the diversity that exists across the continent – and within single cities – and show that wax print is only part of the story of African fashion,” said co-curator Helen Mears.

The museum has curated a diverse group of influential artists and tastemakers from each of the four cities, ranging from international designers and photographers to pop stars and bloggers.



Fashion Cities Africa will include Amaka Osakwe, the Nigerian fashion designer and creator behind Maki Oh, Johannesburg-based creative collective, The Sartists, Nairobi-based brother and sister duo, 2Many Siblings and Casablanca-based designer Zhor Raïs.

The exhibition includes diverse apparel from couture to street style, alongside images, film, sound evoking the creativity and dynamism of the distinctive fashion in each city. A book of the same name, edited by Hannahl Azieb Pool, will also accompany Fashion Cities Africa.

“Fashion Cities Africa” will run from 30 April 2016 – 8 January 2017 at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.

يمثل متحف العادات والتقاليد في اليمن مركزاًَ حديثاً للإشعاع الثقافي والحضاري في عدن، وكل ما في هذا المتحف من قطع تاريخية وملابس وحلي ذهبية وفضية شاهد على العادات والتقاليد اليمنية وعظمة مرحلة حاسمة في تاريخ شبه الجزيرة العربية عامة.

ويبدو متحف العادات والتقاليد اليمنية وهو يمد جسور الحاضر إلى الماضي بأحداثه وما فيه من مفاخر، وعبر ثقافية شامخة في العاصمة الاقتصادية والتجارية عدن.

يجسد متحف العادات والتقاليد اليمنية بعدن رحلة الإنسان اليمني الذي شيد الحضارات الإسلامية والثقافية والعربية على أرض اليمن السعيد، مثلما قدم لنا صوراً من مراحل مختلفة من تاريخه الغني بالأحداث من معارك ورحلات تجارية إلى بلدان الشرق القديم حضارات العالم القديم.

ومن أشهر المناطق اليمنية التي تزرع فيها شجرة البخور حضرموت، المهرة، وجزيرة سقطرى وقد كان قدماء اليمنيين يقومون بحرق البخور أمام معبوداتهم في المعابد لارتباطهم بالطقوس الدينية في كثير من الديانات، وكذلك استخدموا البخور لأغراض علاجية، ومن هنا أصبح البخور سلعة تجارية مهمة للمزارع اليمني يكسب منها المال الوفير.

كما تجد قطعاً أثرية تصور تاجراً يمنياً قديماً على ظهر الجمل، قوافل تجارة البخور، شجرة البخور، وحذاء مصنوعاً من الجلد، حيث أهتم اليمنيون القدماء بصناعة الجلود (2300 ق.م) إضافة الى تحف صناعة الأختام اليمنية القديمة ولوحة تبين الخط المسند وترسم حروفه بشكل زوايا هندسية تسند أضلاعه بعضها لبعض ويكتب بهذا الخط على الأحجار والصفائح الحديدية والبرونزية والنحاسية وقد اشتهر في اليمن الخط الشعبي وهو خط الزبور الذي كانت تكتب به المعاملات اليومية ويكتب على شكل لين مائل على قطع الأخشاب وأعواد النخيل، وقد تضمنت النقوش (الرسمية منها والشعبية) تواريخ وأخباراً تعبر عن الأحداث السياسية والعسكرية التجارية، فضلاً عن القصائد الشعرية ومن أبرزها القصيدة المعروفة باسم (ترنيمة الشمس).

من النادر أن تجد مواطناً لم يزر المتحف مرة على الأقل في حياته، فهناك عدد من المواطنين يقومون بزيارة المتحف أكثر من مرة نظراً لوجود القطع الأثرية النادرة والقيمة، ومن العجائب والغرائب التي لا تخطر على البال، ونظراً للتغيير الدائم الذي يحدث في مختلف أقسام المتحف، هناك قسم يتطلب وقفة مع التاريخ المتجسد في صور وأشكال متعددة للأواني النحاسبة والمعدنية والفضية والذهبية التي استخدمت في المطبخ اليمني في عصور مختلفة من العصر القديم، حيث الأواني الحجرية والطينية حتى عصر صناعة الأواني المعدنية المذهبة والمزخرفة مثل الصحون والفناجين والكؤوس القديمة التي تعود إلى عهد الدولة الإسلامية، ويعد متحف العادات والتقاليد اليمنية من المتاحف القليلة التي تجمع بين الفن والمعمار تحت سقف واحدة.

من أهم العلامات البارزة في المتحف هي (الأزياء الشعبية اليمنية) المناطق مختلفة من اليمن، ويعد هذا القسم أكبر الأقسام في المتحف وأهم المجموعات الأثرية والفنية تشمل الأزياء اليافعية والعدنية والحضرمية والصنعانية، إضافة الى الحلي والمجوهرات الثمينة الفضية والذهبية، يرجع تاريخ هذه الحلي الثمينة الى القرن السادس عشر الميلادي، وهي آية من آيات الفن اليمني القديم الذي يبعث في نفس المتفرج مزيجاً من الشعور بروعة هذا الفن وجلال العبقرية للفنان والمبدع والصانع الماهر في اليمن، ويضاف إليها وجود بعض المجوهرات النادرة والمصنوعة من اللؤلؤ الأبيض الثمين والنادر في هذا الجناح يعتبر من أشهر اقسام المتحف لما يشمله من مجوهرات يمنية قديمة تشمل على القطع الأثرية كالصناعات اليدوية للأقمشة القطنية والحريرية والأثاث والتماثيل وغيرها مما يعكس اليمن القديم وتاريخه وديانته وعاداته وتقاليده وحياة شعبية لمراحل مختلفة من التاريخ القديم حتى العصر الحديث.

وقي المتحف أشياء كثيرة أخرى غاية في الروعة والإتقان وحسن الترتيب والتنظيم، مثل جلسات القات والبن المشهورة شربة في اليمن (القهوة اليمنية المحوجة بالهيل) وغرف النوم المتنوعة الأعمدة المنحوتة وتحف الزينة.

الزي اليمني الإسلامي

كما يوجد في المتحف أزياء يمنية إسلامية حيث تجد أقمشة حريرية كتب عليها الحروف الأبجدية العربية، وبعض القصائد الشعرية التي كتبت حروفها بخيوط حريرية ملونة، كما توجد صور ومعامل صغيرة نموذجية لتطور صناعة الأقمشة الرجالية مثل المعاوز وتلوينها بالإصبغة الملونة، وتاريخ صناعة الأقمشة في اليمن والألوان والأشكال الهندسية التي تزين الأقمشة ومنها الأقمشة التي تمثل الزي الإسلامي والأزياء الشعبية المعاصرة التي قدم الفنان التشكيلي اليمني رسوماته عليها ثم بداية التطوير فالغرزة السحرية ونلاحظ أن صناعة الأقمشة البدائية وخاصة الأزياء الشعبية اليمنية التي كانت ساندة في القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين الألوان الأساسية فيها هي: أحمر الورد، أزرق السماء، أخضر الموج، والقلب والورد، الصحراء، الشمس الأمثل استخداماً لقربه من البنى إضافة الى نسخ الآيات القرآنية على الأقمشة المخملية والحريرية.

كما يوجد في المتحف قسم خاص بالأدوات والأواني الشعبية القديمة والحديث وتبين هذه الأدوات الحياة الاجتماعية ومظاهرها في اليمن عبر مراحل مختلفة وتبين مظاهر الأسواق في الحارات وهي من التراث المحلي والعربي والإسلامي.

قسم الملابس الشعبية الحديثة

كما يوجد في متحف العادات والتقاليد بعدن، قسم الملابس الشعبية الحديثة المظرزة بالألوان الحريرية المتنوعة التي ترتديها الدمى المخصصة للعروض وحول أعناقها العقود الذهبية، ويرتدين ملابس رائعة من الحرير الثمين وأغطية للرأس مقصبة بالذهب، ويجد الزائر للمتحف في هذا القسم مظاهر الحياة اليومية، والإبداع الفني في صناعة وزخرفة الأزياء الشعبية، والاقتباس من المناظر الطبيعية في زخرفة الألوان مع إدخال عناصر زخرفية متنوعة في نسيج القماش وألوانه ما يبعث الإحساس برشاقة خيوط النسيج.

وفي القسم الثالث من المتحف يوجد المطبخ اليمني، ونماذج لصناعة الفخار وتطورها في اليمن، حيث يعرض هذا القسم بعض الأواني الفخارية القديمة التي استخرجت من المواقع الأثرية إضافة إلى نماذج من الأدوات البدائية مثل العجلة التي تدار بالأرجل والفرن البلدي، ثم النقوش والزخارف اليمنية الجميلة التي تزين مجموعة من المزهريات والأواني الفخارية التي استخدمت في عصور مختلفة من التاريخ، كما يوجد في هذا القسم نماذج لصناعة السجاد والصناعات الجلدية التي اشتهرت في اليمن منذ القرون الوسطى وصناعة الحلي الذهبية والفضية والمصوغات التي تخرج من أيادي امهر الصاغة .

يستقبل المتحف كل عام عدداً كبيراً من الزوار المحليين والسياح الذين يأتون من مختلف دول العالم وفي مقدمتهم الألمان حيث زاره في شهر نوفمبر 2009م عدة أفواج سياحية من الألمان والفرنسيين والإيطاليين وغيرهم من السياح العرب، وأعدادهم في أزدياد ملحوظ من سنة الى أخرى .

لذا وضعت الدولة اليمنية سياسة سليمة لتنويع المنتج السياحي وإثرائه والعمل على بناء المنتجعات السياحية النموذجية والفنادق وحماية السائح في اليمن والاهتمام بالمعهد الفندقي في عدن، والأهتمام بالصناعات التقليدية وفتح مراكز لإعداد وتدريب كوادر الصناعات التقليدية من أجل الحفاظ على العادات والتقاليد اليمنية الأصيلة وتكثيف المشاركة في المعارض الدولية وإعداد الأفلام والنشرات عن المواقع السياحية اليمنية القديمة والحديثة.
