AZZEDINE ALAÏA HOMENAGEADO NO DESIGN MUSEUM. - AZZEDINE ALAÏA HOMENAGEADO NO DESIGN MUSEUM.

About the museum
The world's leading museum devoted to contemporary design in every form from architecture and fashion to graphics, product and industrial design. The Design Museum is now open in its spectacular new location on High Street Kensington. Endereço: 224-238 Kensington High St, Kensington, London W8 6AG, Reino Unido

Deceased in November, seamstress Azzedine Alaïa will have a retrospective exhibition in London at the Design Museum. The opening is already scheduled for May 10 and will run until October 7 featuring over 60 notable Alaïa creations from the past 35 years, as well as architectural installations that it has performed in partnership with artists such as Kris Ruhs and Tatiana Trouvé.

The exhibition, entitled "Azzedine Alaïa: The Couthurier", has the particularity of having been conceived with the participation of the honored person, victim of a cardiac arrest already after having collaborated with the curator Mark Wilson in the choice of pieces and the model of exhibition that was already scheduled for a museum, which was recently opened.

The stylist of Tunisian origin was famous for its particular ability to shape the female silhouette, using different materials, cuts and innovative shapes. Even though he had never made a point of being a part of the star system of fashion, Alaïa was regarded as an idol by many stylists as was the case of King Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons) who defined him as "a professional soul and heart."
-

After his graduation, Alaïa began working as a dressmaker's assistant. He soon began dressing private clients, and in 1957 he moved to Paris to work in fashion design.

In Paris, he started to work at Christian Dior as a tailleur, but had to leave five days later as the Algerian war broke out,[6] soon moved to work for Guy Laroche for two seasons, then for Thierry Mugler until he opened his first atelier in his little rue de Bellechasse apartment the late 1970s. It is in this tiny atelier that for almost 20 years he privately dressed members of the world's jet set, from Marie-Hélène de Rothschild to Louise de Vilmorin (who would become a close friend) to Greta Garbo, who used to come incognito for her fittings.

He produced his first ready-to-wear collection in 1980 and moved to larger premises on rue du Parc-Royal in the Marais district. Alaïa was voted Best Designer of the Year and Best Collection of the Year at the Oscars de la Mode by the French Ministry of Culture in 1984 in a memorable event where Jamaican singer Grace Jones carried him in her arms on stage. His career skyrocketed when two of the most powerful fashion editors of the time, Melka Tréanton of Depeche Mode and Nicole Crassat of French Elle, supported him in their editorials.

In 1980, while interior designer Andrée Putman was walking down Madison Avenue with one of the first Alaïa leather coats, she was stopped by a Bergdorf Goodman buyer who asked her what she was wearing, which began a turn of events that lead to his designs being sold in New York City and in Beverly Hills.

By 1988, he had opened his own boutiques in these two cities and in Paris. His seductive, clinging clothes were a massive success and he was named by the media 'The King of Cling'. Devotees included both fashion-inclined celebrities and fashionistas: Grace Jones (wearing several of his creations in A View to a Kill), Tina Turner, Raquel Welch, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Brigitte Nielsen, Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour, Tatiana Sorokko, Shakira, Franca Sozzani, Isabelle Aubin, Carine Roitfeld, and Carla Sozzani.

During the mid-1990s, following the death of his sister, Alaïa virtually vanished from the fashion scene; however, he continued to cater to a private clientele and enjoyed commercial success with his ready-to-wear lines. He presented his collections in his own space, in the heart of the Marais, where he brought his creative workshop, boutique and showroom together under one roof.

In 1996 he participated at the Biennale della Moda in Florence, where along with paintings by longtime friend Julian Schnabel, he exhibited an outstanding dress created for the event. Schnabel-designed furniture, as well as his large-scale canvases, still decorate Alaïa's boutique in Paris.

He then signed a partnership with the Prada group in 2000. Working with Prada saw him through a second impressive renaissance, and in July 2007, he successfully bought back his house and brand name from the Prada group, though his footwear and leather goods division continues to be developed and produced by the group. In 2007, the Richemont group, which owns Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, took a stake in his fashion house but he still does not show during the collections.

However, Alaïa still refused the marketing-driven logic of luxury conglomerates, continuing to focus on clothes rather than "it-bags". Alaïa is revered for his independence and passion for discreet luxury. Catherine Lardeur, the former editor-in-chief of French Marie Claire in the 1980s, who also helped to launch Jean-Paul Gaultier's career, stated in an interview to Crowd Magazine that "Fashion is dead. Designers nowadays do not create anything, they only make clothes so people and the press would talk about them. The real money for designers lie within perfumes and handbags. It is all about image. Alaïa remains the king. He is smart enough to not only care about having people talk about him. He only holds fashion shows when he has something to show, on his own time frame. Even when Prada owned him he remained free and did what he wanted to do."

AZZEDINE ALAÏA HOMENAGEADO NO DESIGN MUSEUM

Tito's yacht will become a museum.

International agreements have been negotiated, Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren have sailed with him: the yacht "Galeb", symbol of the Yugoslavia of Tito before rusting in a Croatian port, will begin a new life as a museum, once it will have been renovated.

After the death in 1980 of Josip Broz Tito, he began his decline in the port of Rijeka (Fiume in Italian) while the Yugoslav federation broke up and exploded in a series of bloody conflicts.

In 2009, the municipality bought this 117-meter boat, which had been seized because of the debts of its Greek owner.

The goal is now to make it a museum and a flagship attraction in 2020 when the port of the Adriatic will be European Capital of Culture, told AFP the Social Democrat Mayor Vojko Obersnel.

Such a project carries controversy in a Croatia where the conservatives are in power and where Tito, portrayed as anti-Croat, is much more controversial than in other former components of Yugoslavia.

If his role in the fight against the Nazis is beyond doubt, his critics denounce his dictatorship and the cult of personality he has established. In September, under pressure from the nationalists, Zagreb has renamed its place Tito, one of the main capital.

"The idea with this boat is not to sing the praises of Tito without reservation" but to tell "the history of Yugoslavia and Croatia," says Vojko Obersnel.

The "Galeb" ("The Seagull" in Croatian and Serbian), was released in 1938 from the shipyards of Genoa. His first object was the transport of bananas. First called "Ramb III", he was enlisted in the war effort by the Italians. Torpedoed by the British in 1941, it was refloated, seized by the Nazis and sank again when Rijeka was bombed by the Allies in 1944.

- A communist yacht on the Thames -

Repaired again, he became Tito's official boat after the war. It was on board that the Yugoslav leader in 1953 went up the Thames to London to meet Winston Churchill, the first official visit to Britain of a communist leader.

It was also on the "Galeb" that were organized "the most important discussions" preceding the birth of the non-aligned movement (MNA), says Kristina Pavec, curator of the Rijeka Municipal Museum, who oversees the project. This political forum, of which Tito was one of the initiators with Nehru (India), Soekarno (Indonesia), Nasser (Egypt) and Nkrumah (Ghana), was created in 1961 by countries wishing to emerge from the confrontation of the East-West blocs of the Cold War.

The glorious past of "Galeb" contrasts with what has become of the yacht, its dusty and dusty chairs scattered in the saloon of honor, its bucket placed in a corridor to collect the drops that ooze and its ceilings that threaten ruin.

The apartments reserved for Tito and his wife Jovanka are the best preserved parts of the ship. "The furniture is original (...), to present as authentically as possible what was their life on the boat," said Kristina Pavec.

- Fiume -

The city has planned a budget of 40 million kuna (5.4 million euros), funded by European cultural funds, to make "Galeb" a museum floating on the history of Yugoslavia, coupled with a hotel or a restaurant.

Once a thriving industrial port, Rijeka, Croatia's third-largest city, is in crisis, with an economic fabric devastated by the privatization process and mismanagement after the independence war of the 1990s.

In command since 2000 of this municipality of 130,000 inhabitants traditionally left, Vojko Obersnel hopes to make the project "Galeb" a central element of what he calls his "post-industrial transition", which includes a revitalization of the city with attractions cultural and tourist attractions.

Since the twentieth century, according to conflicts and geopolitical upheavals, Rijeka has been under the tutelage of six different states - from the Austro-Hungarian empire to the Italian aegis and the Nazi occupation, to the Republic of Yugoslavia and Croatia.

Tito was the herald of Yugoslavia, which he led from the post-war period until his death, and the union of the South Slavs. And "it is thanks to Tito that Rijeka finally became Croatian," says Biljana Perincic, a 43-year-old jewelery designer, after the Second World War and two decades of Italian tutelage.

"But I do not know if the younger ones know enough about Tito to form a relevant opinion."

Vojko Obersnel
