Ancient Chinese Temple Uncovered After Four Years of Excavations.

The Great Shangqing Palace burned to the ground in the 1930s, but now archaeologists know where the ancient temple once stood.

For more than half a millennium, the Great Shangqing Palace was the primary place of worship for a popular Taoist sect in China. It was reportedly where several generations of Chinese emperors worshipped.

But in 1930, the temple completely burned to the ground. After that, archaeologists weren’t sure of its exact location.

Now, thanks to a four-year excavation, the remains of the palace have been confirmed. They sit at the foot of Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi Province in eastern China.

It's the largest excavation ever conducted for a Chinese Taoist site.

To pinpoint the exact location, archaeologists from China's Jiangxi Provincial Research Institute of Archaeology had to survey an area that stretched more than 1.9 million square feet. Eventually they were able to excavate 50,000 square feet of the palace grounds itself.

Video taken at the site shows just how expansive the grounds are. The ancient stone foundation is all that remains today, but the archaeologists plan to protect the site and erect exhibitions that educate visitors about the historic temple that once stood there.

The Great Shangqing Palace was built during China's Song Dynasty, which lasted from 960 to 1279. Confucianism and Buddhism also had religious presence during this time period. Art and culture, supported by emperors, also thrived during the Song Dynasty.

In addition to confirming the temple's location, archaeologists also found pottery, porcelain artifacts, and glazed tiles from ancient paintings.

"We obtained a clear picture of the basic characteristics of the Taoist activities here and discovered the superposition of geological layers from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and the architecture styles in these periods," said Xu Changqing, director of the institute, in an interview with Chinese media outlet CCTV.

While four years' worth of excavations are finished, archaeologists aren't done studying the site. They plan to piece together exactly when the temple was constructed and the cultural climate in which it was built.

Increasingly, the Islamic community has been organizing forms of political action of visibility, recognition and otherness. A good example of this is the #hijabday movement that happens every 1st. from February since 2013, in which Muslim and non-Muslim women post their hijab (Islamic scarf) photos as a way to end prejudice and stereotypes related to Islamic dress. The movement organized by Nazman Kahn reaches more than 124 countries. Research on Islamophobia carried out in Brazil and abroad indicates that Muslim women suffer most from Islamophobic attacks, mainly due to the use of the Islamic handkerchief.

For Westerners / non-Muslims it is difficult to understand how a young woman uses a scarf covering her hair and a clothing that demonstrates her religiousness. Religious belonging to Islam is somewhat strange, because of the lack of knowledge and correct understanding of religion by a large part of the Brazilian population, but we must ask how much has been done to change the bad spreading of religion.

Francirosy

If on the one hand #hijabday does a mobilizing work giving worldwide visibility to women who want to use their handkerchief without being discriminated against, on the other hand, the initiatives of the Brazilian religious institutions regarding "Muslim woman" is very imperceptible: there is no female department (expressive) and when there are are responsible for teas, meetings of affairs of house / family / religion, not always the agenda is about what directly affect them as prayer spaces inside the mosque, political positions, sexual orientation, etc. Women's participation in councils, congresses are insufficient, not long ago were nonexistent. Women are still forced to listen to "women are not in the habit of praying on Fridays", almost indirectly causing them to stay at home, because there are not always adequate spaces for them in mussalas and mosques (I will abstain from commenting that sermons are done in Arabic, with translation that greatly limits understanding). The classes of religion, sermons are still ruled by the haram, that is, more by rules than can be done than speeches that excel by spirituality and knowledge gained on Islamic Sciences, for example. It is common to see in social networks disseminators (men) saying how women should behave and rarely, rarely reads something for men.

I must also point out that despite these tense aspects that populate this feminine / masculine universe in the spread of religion, there are several Muslims who have joined international campaigns in social networks, mobilizing discourses of autonomy and responsibility for what they learn and teach and has been driving the campaigns as of #hijabday. The photos of the women in this matter are of Muslims and non-Muslims who adhere to the movement. In some pages of Facebook / whatsapp women have been occupying spaces, sharing matters of their interest, subjects related to religion, politics, academic knowledge without being attached to the status quo of religion in Brazil. They want more than a Mother's Day tea, they want to act and propose events in which the pedagogy is implemented in the mosques for reception of new reverted and that does not happen what happened last Friday a Muslim stay in the car without praying, because you have been told you have no room for women. Misconceptions do happen, but when they are repeated one must puncture more vehemently. #Hijabday in Brazil is not only the right to use the hijab, but the guarantee of the rights granted by Islam in the seventh century to women. Some Muslims forget that after the death of Prophet Muhammad, his wife Aisha ministered a class for men at the door of his house, and she released more than 2,000 hadiths which are now read and studied by Muslims and Muslims.

What do Muslim women want in Brazil? Outside the Muslim community, they want to wear their handkerchiefs without being teased by jokes, with pejorative comments, and fundamentally do not want to be discriminated against in job interviews. Many of these job seekers are remarried singles, who are in the job market and need to survive, but are discarded in selections even though presenting qualifications for the position. These girls often do not have the support of their families, because they are ignorant of the religion they profess and suffer even more prejudice when they get a job. The scarf is a religious obligation, as I have written several times, a woman in a scarf highlights her worship of God. The veil does not cover up thinking, it does not cover intelligence. Within the Muslim community, these women want to be heard, they want their spaces in councils, conferences, departments, they want classes with more density, spirituality, they want support, mainly in the face of problems of attacks suffered in the daily life.

I dare say that women are the wheel that makes Islam turn in Brazil in a more purposeful way, and I am convinced that it will be women and especially the new generations who will rather use the handkerchief and, more than that, they will end the discourse literalist Wahhabi, because in Brazil there will be no room for hard Islam (haram, haram), but for a more spiritual Islam which considers the heart to be the door of acceptance of religious principles and places reason at the service of practice. Recently a Muslim friend who sells Islamic clothes wrote that she helps women in building their Islamic identity, as an anthropologist I believe that this is what she does, contributes to building the multiple identities of Muslim women who are not passive in the process of this construction, are agents of their stories and identities.

It is not only for the handkerchief that women struggle, they fight for the dignity of being propositional women inside and outside their communities. So be it!

Francirosy
