The Neoclassical Art in Brazil. - A Arte Neoclássica no Brasil. -

The classical elements that seduced 19th Century Art in Europe also enchanted Brazil. In the poetry of Silva Alvarenga (1749-1814), of Arcadismo, the interest for the Antiquity is clear in the reference that makes, the poet, to terms of the period. His poetry paved the way for Romanticism in Brazil, but it was clear the Arctic format of his text, for simplicity, for naturalness and for rejection of the Baroque style. While the Arcadismo appeared in the Poetry, the Brazilian Art metamorfoseava for the Neoclassical, style that remained until around 1870.

Many changes occurred in Brazil in 1808, and one of them was the arrival of the Royal Family. Rio de Janeiro, where the court had then established itself, became the new cultural and political center of the country. In the artistic field, the innovations of Europe came together with the French Artistic Mission, in 1816, in charge and contracted to found and direct the Royal School of Arts and Crafts, in Rio de Janeiro. The group, composed of artists, architects, musicians, mechanics, blacksmiths and carpenters, was led by the writer Joachim Lebreton (1760-1819) and among the components were the architect Grandjean de Montigny (1776-1850); the landscapist Nicolas Antoine Taunay (1755-1830) and his brother, the sculptor Auguste-Marie Taunay (1768-1824); the medal engraver Charles-Simon Pradier (1783-1847); and the painter Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848). The group, however, encountered obstacles, such as the resistance of the baroque tradition, already rooted in the country; the scarcity of financial resources and materials; and political intrigues.

Many of the crafts that were once passed from person to person in Brazil, such as Architecture, Sculpture, Painting and Drawing, were officially studied at the School of Arts, which later became known as the Imperial Academy of Arts. Fine Arts. The site is currently the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Architecture

This is the river, the mountain is this,
These are the trunks, these are the cliffs;
These are still the same groves;
This is the same rustic forest.
(COSTA, Cláudio Manuel da in MASSAUD, 2000, pp. 96, 97)

Influenced by European models, the Brazilian Art gradually replaced the exaggerations of the Baroque, was molded for academicism and the imitation of the classics. It could not be different in Architecture. Churches now have a more behaved, less elaborate model, focused on simplicity of form and rationality.

Around here, the Neoclassical left marks in Rio de Janeiro, where the Royal family settled and in several states. And the Architecture of the period came in two ways. On the one hand there was an official Neoclassical, in the international molds, with a complex level of influence, made with imported material, for the court, for the official means and for the higher classes. The palaces arose. On the other hand, a provincial version of the style, with a more superficial and imitative European influence of the great centers. In fact, as the resources here were still scarce for the complexity of the standard brought from Europe, it was necessary that the materials be brought in from outside. As for the innovations, the external areas began to be valued; were made here, the first planned gardens; and the imperial palm tree began to be used as an element of landscaping. The decoration of the interior spaces was valued, with the coatings, the painting with soft colors, pastel shades and the use of refined objects. And the beauty of the Neoclassical served as inspiration for buildings in several states of Brazil.

In Rio de Janeiro, among the buildings of this style are the Imperial Palace, the House of the Marquise de Santos, the Itamaraty Palace, the Catete Palace, the Brazilian National Museum, as well as houses on coffee-enriched farms whose interiors are very close to court standards.

The Imperial Palace, also known as the Imperial 4, was the former summer residence of Dom Pedro I. Its construction, begun in 1845, ended only in 1862 and was attended by important architects of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and with a beautiful landscaping project. Inside the property, the wooden floors have been imported from various provinces of the empire and there are Carrara marble floors, originating in Belgium. In form, neoclassical clarity and simplicity are present in the symmetrical façade, with a triangular pediment, reminiscent of classic Italian and Renaissance constructions. On the outer walls, the soft pink tone contrasts with the white lines of the windows. The lower ones with arc-shaped details; the upper ones with rectilinear details.

In Bahia, one of the greatest icons of the Christian faith, the Church of Our Lord of Bonfim (Fig. 1), also followed the patterns of Architecture of the period, in its construction and in its interior. Between the beauty of its tiles and of the frescoes, the building still conserves in its facade, remnants of the Rococo.

Inaugurated in 1850, the Santa Isabel Theater (Fig. 6), in Recife, has already received several celebrities and is one of the most beautiful in the country. Several technological resources were implemented in his reforms, but the original characteristics that made him one of the greatest representatives of the Neoclassical in Pernambuco remained the same. They like the style, the triangular pediment of the façade; the arches and columns of the entrance, aligned with the windows of the upper part; and the lines and details of the outer walls. To its character were imported Italian marble, French iron and Portuguese stones. Recife also has representatives of the Neoclassical, the Palace of Justice (Fig. 7) and other public buildings and mansions.

Sculpture

Where, Enigma adored,
Where perplexed guides,
Confused and thoughtful
From my idea the faltering course?
What shadows, what portents
You cover my eyes,
O ignored arcane,
What there from that distance
Do you breathe out of your ray of active effort?
(COSTA, 2014, p.135)

In Imperial Brazil, the coming of the French Mission made it possible to formalize the teaching of Art. The work of a sculptor, once passed from person to person, now had an academic methodology. Among the indicated teachers were Auguste-Marie Taunay and Marc Ferrez (1788-1850), later replaced by Francisco Elídio Pânfiro (1823-1852) and Francisco Manuel Chaves Pinheiro (1822-1884).

Fig. 9 -

The neoclassical shape is shown in the work of Chaves Pinheiro 5, the sculptor who produced the most in the second half of the century. The artist studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, was a pupil of Marc Ferrez and many of his sculptures can be seen in museums, churches and public squares. His dedication to form; his predilection for the study of human figures and the figurative, are clear in his most important work, the Equestrian Sculpture of Dom Pedro II (Fig. 10). At 2,80 meters in height and 3 meters in length, the plaster model was not cast in bronze, since Dom Pedro II, concerned about his good image in the country, refused to pay homage to the construction of schools. In the sculpture, Dom Pedro presents himself on a horse in military robes, decorated and wearing a hat. His left hand holds the reins of the horse and the right, extended, salutes the people for the victory achieved, in the Surrender of the Uruguayan.

Among the neoclassical characteristics, the work makes an allusion to the events of the time, of a still Imperial Brazil. The figure of Dom Pedro, solemn, on his horse, is imposing, austere and transcends the power of the emperor. The regularity of form, the harmony of proportion and the correspondence with reality are the same as those of the antiquity classics, here resumed with a re-signification, updated to the Neoclassical model.

In the Historical Center of Salvador, in Bahia, the Fountain of the Terreiro de Jesus makes an allusion to Mythology. The Sculpture, from 1861, was made of cast iron and has a circular base, in marble. They line the lower part of the image, two women and two half-men representing the four most important rivers of Bahia, São Francisco, Jequitinhonha, Pardo and Paraguaçu. Further up, in the other basin of the fountain, still as remnants of the Rococo, were carved shells, garlands and dolphins. Above, there are four girls with their hands entwined; there is a basin adorned with plants and finally there is the great image of the Goddess Ceres, representative of Abundance.

Painting

The dream is to see the invisible forms
From the inaccurate distance and with sensitive
    Movements of hope and will,
    Search the cold horizon line
The tree, the beach, the flower, the bird, the fountain -
The kisses deserved of the Truth 6.
    (PESSOA, 2006, p.68)

From the dream comes the work, in the recesses of the distant soul, drunk by what is around itself. This thought guides the Art and must have led the thinking of many artists in nineteenth-century Brazil, because the Brazilian painting of that time was a pictorial trip in that country where the Portuguese court was settling. And the French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848) was one of the great achievers of this collection, in the form of Art. In his book, Historical and Pictorial Journey to Brazil, the artist traced and colored the images he saw, from the daily life, from the society of the time, from Indians, slaves, animals and beautiful Brazilian landscapes. Debret himself was instructed by his cousin and professor Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), consecrated French artist, of the Neoclassical. Academicism guided his work and other artists who settled here, in the period, leaving for the centuries later images that narrated an era. In addition to Debret, the French Mission brought Nicolas-Antoine Taunay (1755-1830) and the German Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802-1858). Like Sculpture and Architecture, Painting also began to be taught in an official way, in the style of the European Neoclassical.

As for Debret, his works photographed mid-nineteenth-century Brazil in his daily life. They transited between the Neoclassical and Romanticism, in the approach and for opposing Neoclassical rigor, highlighting and valuing national themes. Although instructed to the academic molds, Debret worked freely, without bothering to be a mirror of what he portrayed.

Among the Brazilian artists who attended the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts are Manuel de Araújo Porto-Alegre (1806-1879), who was a pupil of Debret; Victor Meirelles de Lima (1832-1903), who entered the academy at the age of only fourteen; and Pedro Américo de Figueiredo e Melo (1843-1905).

Oriented in the academic traditions, Victor Meirelles (1832-1903) transited through Neoclassicism, from which he inherited the balance, the standardization and the rigor of the form; anatomical clarity and accuracy; and the preference for historical themes, as in his well-known work, The First Mass in Brazil, of 1860. Venturing also by the romanticism, the artist added the sentimentality to its style; carried his work of a unique and national identity, dealing with subjects such as Indianism, in Moema.

Academism is evident in her study of Princess Isabel's Marriage (Fig. 11), one of the works commissioned by the Imperial Family. The artist's preoccupation with the form is present in the image, by the use of proportion, symmetry, the contrasts between light and dark, the richness of details and the solemn theme. People are gathered for the important event of the nobility, in a richly decorated hall. There are red curtains, very tall, with pleats and delicate design on the edges. The walls and floor have delicate designs and the beautiful dresses of the guests are the mold of the period, standing out among them the emperor and the nobility.

Final considerations

The artists of the French Mission went beyond the designs assigned to them, to systematize the teaching of the Arts. Inspired by the exuberance of our natural landscapes and by a Brazil in formation, they allowed the creative spirit to act freely. They incorporated into our European models, our own, disseminating more than Art, but Culture and History of the country.

The raw stone, the white screen and the beautiful constructions were the testimonies of this creative genius. And the result could be no other than the personalization of a period and a style, which was eventually shaped to our reality.

With the remnants of the Baroque, Rococó and advancing to Romanticism, the Brazilian Neoclassical became evident, witnessed the transformation of culture and left a little bit of its notch in every bit of Brazil. Belo, here, has become a historical record and the way of life of the time and customs.

    Always recharge with value
The little or how much you have left.
Proceed. In response to the fool
There will always be a scarce flower
Of the stones and the mud that seek to reach you.
    This is your fight.
Your life is erased. Light the fire on the glaciers that surround you.
    (CORALINA, 2004, p. 244)

1 Anacreon (563 BC - 478 BC) was a Greek lyric poet of antiquity. His poetry was much appreciated by the Greeks and imitated not only in antiquity, but even in Byzantine times.

2 Meonia was the original name of the Kingdom of Lydia and came to be a Roman province. The place was where Turkey is today and was known during the late Antiquity and Middle Ages.

3 In Greek mythology, Pluto was the god of wealth and associated with generosity.

A Arte Neoclássica no Brasil.

Arquitetura

Este é o rio, a montanha é esta,
Estes são os troncos, estes os rochedos;
São estes ainda os mesmos arvoredos;
Esta é a mesma rústica floresta.
(COSTA, Cláudio Manuel da in MASSAUD, 2000, pp. 96,97)

Fig. 6 – Teatro de Santa Isabel, Recife, Pernambuco.

Fig. 7 – Palácio da Justiça, Recife, Pernambuco.

Fig. 9 – Palácio da Justiça, Recife, Pernambuco, esculturas.

Pintura

O sonho é ver as formas invisíveis
Da distância imprecisa e, com sensíveis
Movimentos da esperança e da vontade,
Buscar na linha fria do horizonte
    A árvore, a praia, a flor, a ave, a fonte –
Os beijos merecidos da Verdade 6.
    (PESSOA, 2006, p.68)

Це стовбури, це скелі;
Це ще ті самі гаї;
(COSTA, Cláudio Manuel da in MASSAUD, 2000, с. 96, 97)

MUNICIPALITY OF NUORO.

She is a student from Nuoro the winner of the Competition of ideas for the logo and the slogan that represents the candidature of Nuoro to the Italian Capital of Culture 2020.

Daria Canu, 21, enrolled at the University of Cagliari, studied toxicology and won the first prize. The logo was recounted by the author herself: "Nuoro is at the center of a spiral of ideas and initiatives: the spiral, golden like the gold of the buttons - a jewel of Sardinian costumes, like the hay harvested in our countryside, like a embrace of the sun and emotions or as a basket of woven reeds, represents every craft activity and tradition, be it food, agro-pastoral or textile, as long as it is evolving ".

The slogan Noisi contains two words and two concepts and can be read both in Italian and in Sardinian. "We-yes" becomes a declaration of intent and courage Nois (i) and? Il nuorese Noi: indicates both the Sardinian / Nuoro membership, and the invitation to be part of the Italy it represents, "explained Canu.

Daria Canu is one of the participants of the Competition that has seen single students and entire school groups present their works. The jury chaired by the designer and architect Flavio Manzoni (director of Design Ferrari) and composed by the writer Marcello Fois, the journalists Elvira Serra (Corriere della sera) and Simonetta Selloni (La Nuova Sardegna) and the jazz musician and composer Gavino Murgia examined the processed and chose among the 10 finalists the most representative logo in its opinion, which was then transformed into a graphic design by President Manzoni.

The jury decided to give an ex aequo to three other works presented by the students: Nicolò Piredda di Nuoro and already a finalist of another competition "Young designer of the year awards 2018", Michele Marrocu of Ales and the technical commercial institute A.Volta di Nuoro, because as explained Simonetta Selloni "of Nuoro we fell in love and reunamorati with the same transport that is addressed to a lover". A passion that the judges have also felt towards other works.

And the jury was even more enthusiastic when he learned that the winner was just a woman (until the last the finalists were classified according to an identification number not to condition the jury, ed).

In the days when we remember the 91 years from the awarding of the Nobel Prize for literature to Grazia Deledda, the only woman in Italy to have received this award, the recognition for the Nuoro2020 logo to a young nuorese makes it even more proud.

Manzoni in delivering the parchment and the thousand euro check to the winner, explained the reasons that led to the choice of the logo, emphasizing that "first of all was the description given by the author to excite the jury".

Manzoni told how the jury felt that this logo "could embody the spirit of the city, and enclose a series of values, represent our roots, our tradition but also be a modern sign, projected towards the future, open", has Manzoni said that he also explained the choice of character by specifying the will to give the inscription "Nùoro, capital of culture 2020": "A rigorous character, where Nùoro stands out with emphasis on ù because we want that also in the Continent be pronounced in right way".

The symbol of the logo "is a spiral that represents a beginning and never an end, and so I hope it is for the Nuorese culture, a starting point, and that of today is only a beginning", said Daria Canu.

The mayor Andrea Soddu was also excited about the words of the winner who proposed that the Canu logo reworked by Manzoni becomes the official symbol not only of the nomination for Nuoro2020 but also of the city and that is flanked by the institutional logo. "Because this nomination is nothing more than a project to relaunch, relaunching the Center of Sardinia, of our territorial community, which can not start again with the concept of openness", said Mayor Andrea Soddu.

And so "the competition of ideas as well as representing a moment of sharing was an opportunity to enhance the true function of a logo that is to tell the city, not just the one experienced but also the perceived one. and to the creative virginity of the boys, because we are convinced that they were the ones who had to be able to better represent our Nuoro ", commented Deputy Mayor Cocco.

A task facilitated by the work of the jury, which as explained Fois, worked to "give back to this community what is due to him" because I am convinced ", continued the writer Nuorese," that any of us owes much more to Nuoro how much Nuoro owes to them ". Because the strength of Nuoro, continued Elvira Serra, "is that it represents the place of the heart, the one in which we take refuge when we are weaker and to which we always return to feel stronger".

"The reality of this city is that it does not have a problem in telling itself, but it has the problem of being reflected in its story", continued Fois, and this is also why the idea of entrusting the creation of the Nuoro2020 logo to young people was born. . "He won the fact that it is the other generation that tells us today how we must think about the future of this city," concluded Fois.

A cultura e o amor devem estar juntos.
Vamos compartilhar.

Culture is not what enters the eyes and ears,
but what modifies the way of looking and hearing.
