With artificial intelligence, museums want to get closer to the visitor.

In the Tomorrow's Museum of Rio de Janeiro, besides contemplating the main exhibition, visitors can now live an innovative experience that actively engages them with the themes addressed. This is IRIS +, an interactive digital resource behind IBM's artificial intelligence technology called Watson. IRIS + is presented as an extension of the exhibition. "It is a cognitive intelligence that transposes the physical space of the museum", says the artistic editor of the institution, Eduardo Carvalho. Upon entering the Museum of Tomorrow, each visitor receives a card from IRIS, the virtual assistant that connects with the contents of the main exhibition. The content is divided into five axes: Cosmos, Earth, Anthropocene, Tomorrow and Nodes. Through this card, the public can interact with the exhibition in various ways, and the museum, on the other hand, records their interactions. This technology was already available there. But IRIS + innovates by giving voice to the virtual assistant, enhancing this exchange.

To interact with technology, the visitor uses headphones and a tablet, as well as an IRIS card reader. By passing the card on the reader, he is greeted by IRIS +, who also questions him about what has worried him most throughout the exhibition. According to the answer - by voice or typing on the tablet (the technology works by decoding the voice into text) - IRIS + provides a lot of information. Finally, artificial intelligence asks the visitor what he believes he can do to contribute positively to that problem. In order to get his hands on the masses, a series of options are suggested for NGOs and institutions, focused on the theme he highlighted.

During the preparation for the launch of the project in the Museum of Tomorrow, several possibilities of answers that the public could give were registered, so that the technology was trained and could provide content on each one of them. This phase involved about 800 participants, who raised themes related to the reality of the population of Rio de Janeiro. According to Eduardo Carvalho, the issue of violence, for example, was cited by children in a neighborhood in the western part of the city that said they lived in a constant state of vigilance after witnessing cases of murders near where they live.

According to the artistic editor, the strategy allows a real and concrete engagement of the visitor, who can carry out the knowledge acquired and even participate in activities that contribute to face the problems of the real world. To date, IRIS + has about 90 registered topics - among them, violence, education, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, prejudice, machismo, child labor, new technologies, health, alienation and political engagement. At the beginning of the exhibition, in December, there were 240 initiatives of more than 100 registered Brazilian NGOs, but new organizations are constantly added to follow the new themes that appear.

Machine learning is not 100% automated. Exposure professionals decide what is worth incorporating into the system as the public interacts with the resource. They also identify possible needs for adequacy of the information provided. As Fabrício Barth, technical director of IBM Watson in Brazil and Latin America explains, although the technology is technically capable of searching for information even in online sources, this feature is not suitable for the case of museums, since these institutions have a responsibility with what is passed on to the visitors and, thus, the curation of the content becomes indispensable. Another feature of the Rio de Janeiro exhibition is the use of Watson technology to predict responses, contrary to what happens in other experiments.

In the Watson technology adopted in the Museum of Tomorrow, the question is the exhibition. "Most of the time, we trained the system to understand the intent of a question, while at the Museum of Tomorrow this was done to understand the intent behind an answer. The difficulty lies in that the answer is generally longer and less objective content than a question, "says Barth.

Education for a world of technologies
In addition to increasing involvement with the museum's theme and transcending its physical boundaries, generating a concrete engagement with the issues presented, the Museum of Tomorrow hopes to bring visitors closer to the use of technology as well. There are visitors who, when asked by IRIS + about their concerns, respond "you". According to the artistic editor, this is because there is still much fear about technological developments and, therefore, the idea is that the Museum contributes to education for technology, from people's contact with artificial intelligence.

Thayná Freitas, a 21-year-old art history student, tried the novelty and liked it. "It's cool because it makes you think about the issues in the world, you had a question (which IRIS + did for her) that I did not know how to answer right." The student of letters Rebeca Souza, also 21 years old and friend of Thayná, preferred to observe. She says she was shy about the possibility of interacting with the machine. "We're not used to it, it's a very different experience," she says, adding that she believes that children, when interacting with the new technologies that are still very young, should reach adulthood more easily to deal with them. Marcos Gabriel de Oliveira, an 11-year-old student of 7th grade, says that one of his biggest concerns, revealed to IRIS +, is with addictions, and he wants to help people fight them. "I learned that technology is not just that and can help a lot of people."

Pinacoteca of São Paulo
At the Pinacoteca in São Paulo, Watson's artificial intelligence technology came to life in the project "The voice of art", which ran from April to December 2017. At the time, it was the visitor who asked questions about the works, obtaining the answers about the life of the author and context of his creation. To make conversation with the public possible, IBM's solution needed only basic ideas and examples to make the first connections and absorb new information. According to Barth, it is not necessary for him to store a very large amount of data to begin with.

For this introductory training to the system, the areas of curatorship and education selected seven works of Brazilian artists from the 18th century to the present day. Then, a database was created with many possible doubts about the artwork and the databases and research were provided to collect potential answers to possible questions such as books, academic research, educational materials and catalogs. Finally, the team involved in the project worked to gauge possibilities for answers to those questions.

In the São Paulo museum, interaction between visitors and works of art took place through the use of similar equipment: headphones and cell phones delivered at the beginning of the visit, as well as beacons (devices placed on museum walls that sent warnings to visitors to warn that a certain work of art counted on the possibility of interaction via artificial intelligence). Once in front of the play, the audience could ask the desired questions.

Challenges to solve
Despite evaluating that the goal of "The Voice of Art" has been achieved, Milene Chiovatto, Pinacoteca's education coordinator, still wondered if the resource will be able to contribute to generating a genuine interest in the art itself. "Experience with technology often supplants experience with art. And it is not possible to determine whether the public mobilized by technology will return to the museum, or even be interested in culture or art in the future, "he reflects.

In addition, the Pinacoteca educator questions the extent to which current technology already allows a dialogue with the machine within a dynamics that is really similar to a natural dialogue. "For this to happen, artificial intelligence technology must advance in two senses: first in the capacity for empathy, that is, in the search for a path of common sense towards the other dialogant. And also in the ability to discuss conceptual values and definitions, without assuming as truth a single statement. It's the ability to be plastic, to mold, and to re-evaluate our own assumptions that make us human. "

Milene poses some questions to reflect on the use of technology in art: are the ways to mediate the encounter with art as multiple as art itself? Is artificial intelligence the future of the museum? And education? Are cognitive computing technologies the future of humanity? Could resources like Watson replace contact with one another? "For now, it is still up to us, humans, to lend our judgment to the machine, checking the validity and adequacy of its answers. It is possible that in the future the technology will give up on us even for this ", believes the educator.

Desafios a resolver

Será a inteligência artificial o futuro do museu?

Hong Kong harbour gets star attraction with sculpture park.

Hong Kong's harbourfront is known for glistening skyscrapers and the sight of containerships navigating busy shipping lanes -- but a new art project has added a giant pumpkin, a map of the stars and a pair of disembodied legs to the famous skyline.

The Harbour Arts Sculpture Park, which officially opened on Thursday, is a collection of works by 19 local and international artists including Britain's Antony Gormley and Tracey Emin, Japan's Yayoi Kusama, as well as Jenny Holzer and Hank Willis Thomas from the United States.

The series of installations aims to increase public access to art in a city known more for its exclusive high-end galleries and lucrative auctions.

"I think public art is a unique place to make a statement and I wanted to make a work that people could inhabit and basically become a part of," said Willis Thomas, perched inside a large metal speech bubble.

The work, "Ernest and Ruth", is one of two of his sculptures in the project, which was organised by the nonprofit Hong Kong Arts Centre in collaboration with local partners.

On the harbourfront, intrigued visitors had already begun taking pictures of themselves with Kusama's oversized pumpkin sculpture on Thursday afternoon, while children played among the other works dotted on the grass.

Hong Kong artist Kacey Wong, whose angular golden artwork "Asteroids & Comets" is a constellation of three-dimensional star maps, said younger visitors were the quickest to engage with the art.

"This morning some children they saw the work and just charged right in and started jumping up and down inside without reading any of the captions," he told AFP approvingly.

Hong Kong is increasingly burnishing its artistic credentials and has hosted the annual Art Basel, Asia's largest art fair, since 2013.
