Arte Transatlântica "--- Weltkulturen Museum, Schaumainkai 29, 60594 Frankfurt am Main --- AUSSTELLUNG - „Entre Terra e Mar. Zwischen Erde und Meer. Transatlantische Kunst” --- Weltkulturen Museum, Schaumainkai 29, 60594 Frankfurt am Main - collaboration: Mona Suhrbier

An exhibition with the artists Ayrson Heráclito (Salvador da Bahia, Brazil) and Rigo 23 (Madeira, Portugal and Los Angeles, USA)

exhibition dates
October 12, 2017 - August 26, 2018

The World Cultural Museum presents contemporary political-poetic interventions and works by artists Ayrson Heráclito (participant of the 57th Venice Biennale 2017 and the exhibition "(Comunal Country) Marina Abramovic + MAI" 2015 in São Paulo) and Rigo 23 (participant of Folkestone Triennal in England and the exhibition "Mundos Alternos: Art and Science Fiction in the Americas" at UC Riverside, California, USA, 2017).

The exhibition culminates in the long-standing occupation of the museum with Afro-Brazilian and indigenous aspects in the art and culture of Brazil and sets new impulses regarding the current perception of transatlantic artistic processes between Africa, Europe and America. This includes especially the encounter of the artists with collection objects from South America and Africa. Their selection of objects reflects their own views and focuses and can be seen in the exhibition.

In expansive installations, video works, photographs, sculptures and performances, both artists address the once-European power of historical events from times of slavery and colonial rule. These events continue to affect the lives of the descendants of African-American slaves in the Diaspora and indigenous Guaraní in the metropolitan areas of South America. The transatlantic, transtemporal "intervening" forces them to live in transit.

Rigo 23 uses participative methods to realize art projects with Guarani in Brazil that reflect their creativity and spirituality and testify to their political power. It becomes clear that so-called marginalized people have always had and still have an active role to play.

Ayrson Heraclito combines his art with the aesthetics of urban Afro-Brazilian culture and religion as an expression of resistance, self-assertion, and preservation of slaves' culture. Both artists make it clear that culture and art enable survival in transit. With their own emphases, Ayrson Heráclito and Rigo 23 address the question of the marginalization of others in time and space. Her works are dedicated to historical places that bear witness to hegemonic memories and lack of eye-level.

The exhibition is supplemented by loans from the Museu Coleção Berardo (Lisbon), the Galeria Tapeçarias de Portalegre and the private collections of the two artists.

The concept and design of the exhibition arose in a dialogue between the curators and anthropologists. Mona Suhrbier (Custodian of the Americas, World Culture Museum) and dr. Jane de Hohenstein (Salvador da Bahia, Brazil) with the two artists.

EXPOSIÇÃO - "Entre Terra e Mar. Entre terra e mar. Arte Transatlântica "--- Weltkulturen Museum, Schaumainkai 29, 60594 Frankfurt am Main   ---

Mona Suhrbier (Custodian of the Americas, World Culture Museum) e dr.

AUSSTELLUNG - „Entre Terra e Mar. Zwischen Erde und Meer. Transatlantische Kunst”   ---   Weltkulturen Museum, Schaumainkai 29, 60594 Frankfurt am Main

Eine Ausstellung mit den Künstlern Ayrson Heráclito (Salvador da Bahia, Brasilien) und Rigo 23 (Madeira, Portugal und Los Angeles, USA)

Ausstellungsdauer
12. Oktober 2017 – 26. August 2018

About Ishinomori the manga artist
Shotaro Ishinomori

Born on January 25, 1938 in Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture (real name: Shotaro Onodera)

1954: Makes his manga artist debut with “Second Class Angel.”

From 1964, he begins producing his most well-known works, such as “Cyborg 009,” “Kamen Rider,” “Sabu to Ichi Torimono Hikae” and begins to carry his work over to animation and live-action film. Around this time he also begins taking on many other non-manga related projects, and as part of his attempts to push the limits of the medium, made the ‘Manga Declaration’ in 1989.

Passed away on January 28, 1998 at age 60.

Even after his death, his works continue to have a significant impact. In 2008, the “Shotaro Ishinomori Complete Manga Works” published by Kadokawa Shoten was awarded the Guinness World Record for ‘most comics published by one author.’

The close ties between Ishinomaki City and Ishinomori

The connection between Ishinomori, born in Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, and Ishinomaki City, came into being in July 1995, when an interview was held between him and the Ishinomaki City Mayor of the time.

At this time, the center of Ishinomaki City was full of empty streets with shops’ shutters closed tight. In order to help bring life back to the city center, an idea came to the minds of Ishinomori and the Ishinomaki City government to build a manga museum in Nakaze, an area Ishinomaki was particularly fond of. This was the framework of the ‘Manga Land Project.’

It is said that Ishinomori in his school days rode his bicycle for about three hours to get to the Okada Movie Theater in Nakaze and watch movies there.

The exterior of the Ishinomori Manga Museum was designed to resemble a spaceship.

It was built based on a design by Ishinomori.

These are the words left by Ishinomori while creating architectural models for the museum.

Interview with Ishinomori while in the process of designing the Manga Museum

I have made a model of what I think might look good.

A building with a sense of fun; not like the boring official buildings so often built by hard-headed government people.

I know that ship-building played a big part in Ishinomaki’s prosperity. Wouldn’t it be fun to imagine if a space ‘ship’ had landed here from Manga planet!?

Take a look at a map of Nakaze Island. It looks just like Manhattan, New York, which as you know was the center of the world economy in the 20th century.

Now, we’re in the 21st century, when intangible things will become more important. We’re talking about manga, so how about if we make it Mangattan!

Actually, we have already been calling it the ‘Mangattan Project’ ourselves for two years now (since 1995). I am hoping that in the future, this Mangattan area will become a kind of exciting mini amusement park.

Now, enough about the concept, the most important thing is the content.

Of course I want exhibit my own work, but I’m also hoping that other manga artists will come together to have exhibitions and events here. In that sense, the museum will never be “finished” and will never stop progressing.

And most importantly of all, I want to make it a place to promote Japanese culture (just for the record, I’d like to make it clear that I am not limiting it to manga only) to children and all over the world; somewhere to cultivate human resources and offer opportunities for lifelong learning (Ishinomori was involved with research on lifelong learning together with the current Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).

Finally, if I could wish for one more thing, it would be good if it could be given a welfare aspect, offering employment opportunities for older people.

To make long story short, I hope for it to be a place where both young children and grandpas and grandmas can come and enjoy themselves. In the future, I would want to join in the fun, since I plan to live in nearby Tashiro Island.

Sobre Ishinomori o artista de manga
Shotaro Ishinomori
