How the Russians changed my life: Marina, from Brazil.

For foreigners, a "no" is always a "no", and a "yes" ... possibly a "no", while for Russians everything is "no" but possibly becomes "yes". Understood? No? But you will understand!

1

With a then newly opened bust of Machado de Assis
in the Library of Foreign Literature of Moscow.

When I arrived in Moscow on a university night in April 2007, the scenery seemed a bit bleak. The entrance hall of the building was clean - but not much, the floors red, the walls painted with beige enamel paint, almost brown. Everything was a bit ugly and our building was called "quarantine."

Something from another world to me. We stretched our arms, myself, and other Brazilian university students who spent 25 hours between planes and airports, and there blankets, bedding were laid there. We went upstairs to our rooms - real kommunalkas, with bathrooms and kitchens shared with people from all over the world (in the morning, a beauty, from late into night, getting worse!).

The bathrooms had crockery on the floor with a hole in the middle, in which we walked - and we would not sit. Wow, what invention of mankind to avoid contact (enough strong legs)!

The unforgettable friendships that the Russian university provides.
With the Angolan Claudia (left).

That same year I started to watch the series "Lost" and everything in the place sent me to the bizarre black hole where the passengers of that plane had gotten. I woke up on my first Russian morning, an end of April, and - surprise! - snowed. It was the first time I saw snow in my life - I, coming from Brazil, that only sparked carnival, sun, beach, Pele and Ronaldinho as a reaction of the Russians when I told of my origins.

So far so good. But I spent almost a year and a half crying every day. Without getting an internet connection in the room to call my own, unable to speak the language, without making friends with the Russians themselves. Gradually - and another six and a half years of difficulties later - I began to adapt. Today, far away, I feel a huge lack of Russia and the Russians, despite being in daily contact with Russian language and themes.

3

No, it was not just a personal melancholy or depression that I had in my first year and a half in Russia. No abstinence from social networks - Facebook, for us Brazilians, at least, still crawled and Orkut was a big bad joke! Russians are hard, that's right!

Later, I heard Russian immigrants in Europe talking to each other in a derogatory way: "мы, русские, все время собачимся друг с другом" ("mi, russkie, vse vrêmia sobátchimsia drug s drugom").

How to explain this sentence? "We Russians 'growl' at each other all the time" ?! I had never heard that verb, "sobátchtsia," and yet I understood at once what that Russian was saying to the woman: "sobachiasia" could only come from "sobáka," "dog," and it was clear that he was referring to the mode nothing European of the Russians to be mistreated like nothing else, like street dogs that fight for a bone that does not even exist.

And this is negative? Absolutely not. Europeans forgive me, but Russicity is fundamental!

Of course, I was only able to understand it long after this, when I saw that our Latin, American and European lack of sincerity affect our lives in such a negative way.

The discussion for the Russians is almost a sport. I never forget a comedy sketch from the dumbest of Russian TV shows, the "Shiest kadrov," in which a man visits his friend, walks in, sits down and, seeing that the host agrees with everything, says that he is very annoying and prepares to leave but, already outside the door finds a point of discord and returns inside - now yes the visit was worth!

4

The Russians growl but then soften. With the editor and super friend Dmitri.

Not that this way of life is healthy there, and I always remember being stressed in Moscow. But after a certain time between America and Europe, I realize that every conversation we conduct is a great lie, and our way of living without ever trusting anyone, ditto.

As the brilliant Soviet journalist Sergey Dovlatov wrote in his "The Office," a veritable treatise on the crafty Soviet publishing gatekeeping, "[In Soviet Union] if they did not openly disown it, it would mean that the subject would lead to an outcome favorable. And even when they were disliked, all was not lost. Since some bureaucrats spoke grossly mechanically, as if by reflex. (...) Here everything happens in a different way.

2

Lusophony: Cultural Heritage. Portugal. - Lusofonias: Património Cultural. Portugal.

Visiting monuments, reading books, going to the movies or to a museum ... is always a fascination, because a huge cultural gain! Yes, the history of humanity is best understood by the culture produced over the centuries.

Each time and place has its expressions of culture. This is the wealth of a people. There is material heritage, but also very immaterial. I always delight in proverbs and songs, poems and parables, dances and other expressions of the body.

Portugal has megalithic monuments, tracks from Viriato times, Celtic and Visigothic ruins, roads, buildings and other signs of Roman culture. Being one of the oldest countries in the world, it has in the castles and forts a brand image of a people who knew how to defend themselves from all those who wanted to usurp their independence and property rights.

The palaces speak loudly of more recent times, with kings and feudal lords. But our Cultural Heritage has an enormous contribution of the Christian Faith of the people. There are ruins of churches and chapels of very ancient times, because Christianity entered the present Portuguese territory in the first centuries. Then came convents and monasteries. Portugal gained much in culture with the Monastic Orders, from Cyster to the Franciscans and Dominicans. And it was the Church who cultivated the letters more and more. He printed bibles and missals, taught reading and writing. He also cultivated the fields, developed the fruit-growing, taught the people to quench hunger and thirst.

When we look at the Tourist Guides, we always find proposals that have to do with the Faith of these Portuguese people. Older or newer churches, convents and monasteries, shrines in the high mountains or in places of strong and striking religious experiences ... Christian architecture continues to give letters through this world beyond.

Entering a Museum in Portugal, no matter what, implies finding works of art that pertain to the Catholic Church. There are many paintings and sculptures inspired by biblical texts. There are pieces of goldsmithery that have been created for liturgical purposes, such as wickerwork, turban, chalices, or patens. There are gilded carvings of altars of ancient churches. There are vestments and other priestly garments.

The Cultural Heritage is enriched by the art and beauty of the people who have inhabited the land, ever since. To know him better is to understand human dignity and the possibilities of creating. Visiting places where culture has more expression is a daring of those who want to grow in knowledge of the past and present to tear daring paths in the future.

Lusofonias: Património Cultural. Portugal.

Imprimiu bíblias e missais, ensinou a ler e a escrever.
