(Yanuar Yudha)

The museum is mutant. Article for the May 18 edition of the Museum Magazine - Brazil, by Juliana Monteiro. - O museu mutante.

When I saw a new opportunity to contribute an article for the May 18 issue of the Museum Magazine, I thought long and hard about what path to take to talk about hyperconnected museums.

Juliana Monteiro

The first idea I had was to approach the theme from the perspective of the impact of digital technologies on the day to day of institutions and how this has transformed their role and their relationship with different audiences. It is an idea that by itself is well known and debated inside and outside ICOM.

But as I went a little deeper into the subject, my desire was to be able to explore the subject beyond issues of impact. After a few days of that famous uninspired void, and after verifying that the most obvious path was not the one I wanted to follow immediately, here is a question for me: when we talk about hyperconnected museums, we are talking about exactly what ? What makes a museum become or become hyper-connected?

Are we talking about the museum that looks for different ways of communicating its programming and its collection through digital tools? Is it the museum that publicly manifests, through social networks, its thought about the events of our time, thus sharing a little of its vision of the world? Are the museums deeply connected with their local audiences, seeking, through this relationship, to build an egalitarian dialogue between all the parties involved? Perhaps there is no right or wrong answer to these questions and all these museums are, in their way, hyperconnected. However, it is necessary to point out a common dimension among all the variations: the capacity to change, to embrace new ideas and to do something concrete from it.

Mutation, in this sense, is relative less to the use of an X or Y technology or methodology, and more to the incorporation of new ways of thinking and acting. I understand, therefore, that a hyperconnected museum is fundamentally a museum capable of making new connections with its collections and its public, using or not electronic tools. I can also say that a hyperconnected museum is one that can take advantage of the winds of change to revise their positions, their visions and, above all, how they relate to people.

This relationship reminds me of a phrase I heard last year during the Annual Conference of COMCOL-ICOM - Committee for the Development of Collections of the International Council of Museums: museums need more of people than people need museums. Considering the Brazilian reality, where data - although old - from the IBGE show that we have a percentage of 92% of the population that has never visited a museological institution, the phrase still makes more sense. What does this lead us to think? That museums, in the 21st century, need to learn more and more to understand (and participate) in contemporary flows, dealing with their liquidity or with their tendencies, whether ephemeral or not. In the end, there is the consideration that people are changing, as well as their habits, their ways of interpreting the world around, and museums need - if they want to make sense - to be attentive and connected to it.

But here's a clarification: when I think of "mutated museums", I think above all of the people who work in them. After all, museums, as already said, need people and this extends to their backstage. The famous and yet so little investigated "inner public" is precisely where the real mutation needs to happen.

Museum professionals, in my opinion, need to adapt to the world around them. And this, of course, depends on the training courses and the organizational environments where they operate. But it also depends on a personal predisposition to embrace such movements of change.

To make such speech clearer, I use here the example of involving cultural institutions with Wikipedia, with a view to making images available from their collections to illustrate articles in the largest online encyclopaedia in the world. Many institutions - through their professionals, of course - declare that, in addition to issues of lack of infrastructure and a foreign policy that encourages them towards broad and free dissemination of the collections, they are also afraid. Fear of what ?, we can think.

Firstly, the fear of losing control over the quality of the information widely available, the fear of exposing failures and, therefore, "tarnishing" the image of the institution as something possessing an accurate knowledge. And here we see the force of a tradition that leads us, as museum workers, to perpetuate, albeit unconsciously, the museum's perception as a holder of absolute truth and that is above failures. Or the view of the museum as something that can not and should not get too involved with contemporary agendas because of the risk of displeasing someone.

Well, I believe that museums will always displease someone. For commendable reasons and others not so much. And museums do not, or want, absolute power over everything they produce and conceptualize. After all, digital technologies can be used for different purposes, including those with which we do not agree immediately or never. Therefore, there is no absolute security or control in the era of the digital domain.

In this sense, museum professionals can deal with this in two ways: either they refuse to accept such a scenario and continue to reproduce attitudes and behaviors that do little to revise the museum's role in contemporary times or embrace the new scenario with its risks and potentialities, and try to make it as good as possible. And, of course, they participate in the pressure movement so that they can get more encouragement from their own institutions and governments to change fragility scenarios. After all, we are agents of change as much as our institutions.

I think the mutated museum is one that can actually talk to its different audiences - including the internal one. In other words, it is that museum that manages, with its positioning and activism, to become mutant not only from the social network out, but especially from the social network into. This is the museum that we all wish for and we strive for one day to become possible.

Mutation. feminine noun
2. tendency, facility to change your mind, opinion, attitude, etc .; inconstancy, mutability, volubility

O museu mutante.
