International Congress of Ethnobiology, in August 2018, at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Address: Hangar Convention Center of Amazônia, Belém, Pará, Brazil.

Goeldi Museum Agency - Belém + 30 is coming and more than 30 countries have already confirmed their participation in what is one of the biggest socio-biodiversity events in the world. Between August 7 and 10, the capital of Pará hosts the XVI International Congress of Ethnobiology, the XII Brazilian Symposium on Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology, the IX State Fair of Science, Technology and Innovation and the 1st World Fair of Socio-biodiversity.

Countries confirmed - In addition to Brazil, Germany, Angola, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Ecuador, Finland, France, French Guiana, Netherlands, Hungary, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Kenya, United Kingdom, Guyana, Suriname, Tajikistan and Thailand are the countries that have already confirmed participation.

Programming - During the four official days of the event, the public will participate in lectures, academic sessions, work sessions, poster sessions, mini-courses and an extensive artistic-cultural program with presentations of carimbó, lundu, marujada, guitarrada, capoeira, tambor of creole, cord of birds, oxen, among several other manifestations. The goal is to provide the exchange and strengthening of cultural identity, based on the diversity of ethnic groups from various parts of the planet that will be present in Belém + 30. Among the main attractions of the meeting is the I World Socio-biodiversity Fair. The intention is to promote family production and the way communities relate to the forest to obtain their assets, whether food, material or immaterial.

Declaration of Belém - The program will mark the thirty years of the first International Congress of Ethnobiology, held in Pará in 1988. At the time, researchers from the social and natural sciences, environmentalists and indigenous representatives from 25 countries prepared the Declaration of Belém. guides the work of researchers in relation to guaranteeing the rights of indigenous peoples and traditional communities.

"The Declaration of Belém has also influenced some articles of the Convention on Biological Diversity, a document signed by many countries on this issue of the rights of traditional peoples. Therefore, the statement is a kind of regiment to be followed and to be watched hard by the researchers. We know that laws today are increasingly reformatted in order to condition these traditional communities that hold this knowledge about biodiversity, "says UFPA professor and researcher Flávio Barros, one of the organizers of the event.

With the central theme "Belém +30: the rights of indigenous peoples and traditional populations and the sustainable use of biodiversity, three decades after the Declaration of Belém", the main objective of the event is to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the Belém, three decades after the first international meeting on Ethnobiology.

For Professor Flávio Barros, biodiversity today generates many conflicts of interest in global geopolitics. "On the one hand, there is big capital, agribusiness or big companies wanting to capitalize on biodiversity for profit. On the other hand, we have the traditional communities, the farmers, the indigenous peoples that maintains another kind of relationship with nature. It is a biodiversity that is useful to reproduce life, both in the material and symbolic fields. And this biodiversity has the main goal of bringing good living to these people. "

Organization - The event is promoted by the International Society of Ethnobiology (ISE) and the Brazilian Society of Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology (SBEE). In Belém, the organization is from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG) and Foundation for Support and Research Development (Fadesp), in partnership with several other institutions of education and research in the region, including the Secretariat (Sectet), the State University of Pará (UEPA) and the Federal Rural University of Amazonia (UFRA).

Open-air museum of Ballenberg, in the region of the Bernese Alps. Switzerland.

Visitors can discover the harsh reality of peasants in the 18th to 19th centuries. How did the Swiss live in the past?

1
The scenery of the museum is also used for the presentation of
plays such as "The Father and the Captain" on July 9, 2012.

Not far from Lake Brienz, surrounded by high mountains, situated in an area of mountains and forests, about 110 rural buildings are spread over 66 hectares: magnificent farmhouses, with facades of long thin strips of wood or thatched roofs , timbered chalets, half-timbered buildings, stone-on-stone constructions (embedded between them, without spaces) with roofs of gneiss plates (metamorphic rock consisting of mica, quartz and feldspar crystals, arranged in parallel blades), a Mediterranean homestead, alpine chalets and a viticulture house - one might think that here are the traditions of building different countries.

But all the houses are from Switzerland - they were brought from all parts of the country and rebuilt in Ballenberg, faithful to the original. "Switzerland is a multi-ethnic state," says Beatrice Tobler, head of scientific research at the open-air museum Ballenberg. "It has very different geographical and climatic regions, each exposed to other cultural influences." So the architecture is so different, because materials were always used, Tobler explains. In some regions there was more wood, in others more stone material.

A human zoo was not wanted

The museum almost failed, because of this multiculturality of Switzerland. In the 1930s, the Pro Campagna organization suggested following the example of other countries and opening an open-air museum in Switzerland. But the Swiss Property Protection ServiceLink abroad, which takes care of the preservation of monuments, was against: the types of houses in Switzerland are very diverse to be able to be shown, without seeming artificial, in one place.

In addition, there was concern that an open-air museum could match the dubious action of the National Exhibition in Geneva in 1896, when more than 200 Sudanese were displayed in a "black village", and about 300 Swiss in a " Swiss village ". Such a "human zoo" seemed problematic. The plan to turn a part of an inhabited village of Brienz into an open-air museum was therefore rejected.

Finally, it was agreed to open a museum in the uninhabited Ballenberg, near Brienz. In 1968 a foundation was created. She searched for houses of historical value that were threatened with demolition all over Switzerland. In 1978 the museum was opened. From this day on, the foundation only brings homes to the Ballenberg Museum that can not stay there due to traffic projects or construction projects on the old site.

As authentic as possible
In the houses, the museum displays original furniture as well as utensils and tools. All objects are from the period prior to the motorization of agriculture - that is, prior to 1950. The oldest house was built in 1336, the most recent in 1900. Exhibitors want to show how they really were, along with modest buildings, poor living conditions and poor furnishings.

The gardens are also grown and planted according to ancient traditions. Many works are performed by horses and carts. The museum operators try to preserve the ancient knowledge: they planted, for example, "soap grass", from which a liquid detergent can be made. Every autumn, the museum staff processes garden linen in a linen cloth.

A nation of farmers and domestic workers
As Switzerland is a poor country in natural resources, agriculture used to be very important. In 1850, the majority of the Swiss worked in agriculture, be it in the field, livestock, forestry, viticulture or fishing.

But most of these workers were not farmers in the narrower sense. They had little or no land, and worked for other farmers. "Many families also had parallel jobs in weaving, wool processing and embroidery because we had to sell something to buy other goods - like salt," says Tobler.

Often a so-called "middleman" provided small commodities to the small farmers, who turned them into a product working from home, which he bought from them back. In the museum, visitors can observe the museum staff in the manufacture of traditional baskets, blacksmithing, weaving, spinning and sculptureLink external.

3
In this house, built approximately in 1780, lived more wealthy farmers.

Bitter poverty along with pompous wealth
There were places with great wealth in Switzerland - especially in the cities - and the magnificent factory mansions and imposing farms are witnessed in the museum.

However, a large part of the rural population lived in extreme poverty, as the houses of the poor day laborers and the alpine huts show. "Even though most of the houses look good from today's point of view, one can quickly see in what situation poor people were when one imagines that one has to live in these houses," says Tobler.

In the 19th century, a large part of the rural population moved to cities to work in the industry.

All of Switzerland: an open-air museum
Today, the museum is fighting the loss of visitors. The problem: unlike other outdoor museums, for example in Germany and Scandinavia, the Ballenberg Museum is not near a large but isolated town in the mountains. In addition, the grounds of the museum are very spacious and steep - especially for foreign tourists, who are not accustomed to long walks on steep terrain, depending on the country of origin. It's a challenge.

For this, visitors experience a piece of history: the museum is located in the area of the so-called "Reduit" (reduced), where during World War II the Swiss army should have withdrawn to defend the country against Nazi Germany. But Switzerland was lucky: a military strike did not happen. As Switzerland, with the exception of a few failures, was not bombed, the historic buildings were preserved. Seen in this way, the whole of Switzerland is a kind of open-air museum.

The Universalist Mission Of The Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi. Interview..

A symbol of intercultural dialogue and the fruit of the privileged relationship between France and the United Arab Emirates, the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi has become, in six months, a key stage of the city. If the Louvre des sables is intended to reflect the common history of humanity in terms of civilizations, the museum intends to assert itself as one of the major cultural centers of this region of the world. Canvas by Leonardo da Vinci, statue of the Madonna and Child near the Holy Quran, sculpture of Ramses II ... the Louvre Abu Dhabi is home to many masterpieces. Meeting, on the spot, with its general director, Manuel Rabaté.

-
Six months after the inauguration of the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum by President Emmanuelle Macron and his wife alongside Crown Prince Mohammed Ben Zayed Al-Nahyan and President of the Louvre Jean-Luc Martinez, what initial assessment do you draw in terms of attendance? touristic ?

The moment is indeed opportune to draw up an initial assessment. Our project emerged ten years ago, and during this decade, we have had ample time to anticipate what would be the public of the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi. Nearly 190 different nationalities live side by side in the UAE, and the country's privileged position gives it a real global hub at the crossroads of several nerve centers (India, Saudi Arabia, Africa, Europe ...). Annually, millions of travelers pass through the city, it is in this context that we conducted our reflections. We followed two lines of work: rooting the museum locally so that it has a resonance among natives and also target the tourist population: leisure travelers, trade visitors via trade shows and seminars, medical tourism. The UAE authorities have understood very well that diversification is essential. Thus, attendance shows the trend of 55% of tourists and 45% of locals.

Every day, we welcome between 2,000 and 5,000 visitors with periodic peaks. At the end of 2017, when the calendar coincided with local vacations and international holidays, closely followed by the Chinese New Year, we reached 10,000 daily workers.

2

Manuel Rabaté, Managing Director @Louvre Abu Dhabi

What is the purpose of this museum? What dialogue do you have the ambition to maintain with the Emirati ecosystem and, more generally, regional?

The DNA of the Louvre is based in the understanding of humanity through civilizations. There has always been this desire to want to embrace the whole world, to collect emblematic civilizational objects and credited with an inestimable historical wealth. In fact, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a history of art with universal vocation that promotes values of openness and generosity by telling the history of humanity through 600 visually very strong works. Although there is an important French component such as excellence, museum expertise as well as loans of sculptures, paintings and furniture, the Louvre Abu Dhabi remains a museum of Emirian law. The French can also be proud to occupy the outposts of this universalist mission.

Moreover, the choice of the Emirans to adhere to this idea is not insignificant: it reflects the ambition of the country to position itself in the world as a central player in the humanist cause, inviting the world to come home . The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a powerful educational tool, an investment in culture, in other words, it is a strategic asset, as can universities with an international reputation. As the crow flies, there is the Abu Dhabi Sorbonne, the New York University of Abu Dhabi, which places us in the "intellectual" district of the city. It is in this ecosystem that evolves the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and all this mesh contributes to promote the spirit of emulation.

Moreover, let us keep in mind that these developments are not new since the desire to embrace culture is part of a much older process. The Al Ain Museum which traces the history of the Emirates was founded in 1969, two years before the proclamation of the federation of the United Arab Emirates.

We also cultivate very close links with our peers from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museums, the Zayed National Museum, the Riyadh Museum, or Muscat Museum in Oman, from which we borrowed works. The Louvre Abu Dhabi clearly can not satisfy the obvious cultural thirst alone. We need to interact with our brothers and sisters. There may be some competition between us in terms of exhibitions, however we will know how to work in good intelligence to coordinate on the calendar: the idea is to enrich the offer because it is far from being saturated. In my opinion, the predominant guideline is the fact that Abu Dhabi is now a real tourist destination. Therefore, we must make visitors (locals and tourists) want to stay longer, especially through the lever of subscriptions to museums, through events.

3
Louvre Abu Dhabi Pedestrian walkway @Louvre Abu Dhabi

What are the centerpieces of the museum that today attract the most attraction and palatability?

We have many masterpieces. I think spontaneously of the Virgin Mary, which is lent to us by the Louvre, and to the Holy Koran, both exposed side by side in the hall of sacred texts. There is of course also the monumental statue of Ramses II, the Chinese dragon, the Belle Ferronnière de Vinci, the painting of Bonaparte crossing the Alps (loan from the National Museum of the Palace of Versailles), the self-portrait of Van Gogh ... In total We have 300 loans, 280 Louvre Abu Dhabi acquisitions and 20 regional loans.

4

Louvre Abu Dhabi Virgin and Child alongside the Holy Quran @Louvre Abu Dhabi

During the recent state visit to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Ben Salmane, several cultural partnerships were sealed between the two countries. Hexagonal know-how was sought to create a national orchestra, an opera and even a museum up to three times larger than the Louvre Abu Dhabi. How do you interpret this ambient cultural frenzy?

If the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum today arouses appetite and envy, it shows that we have achieved something. I specify that such a project has required 10 years of reflection, work: it is a very complex machine. It must be able to operate alchemy on both sides.

Could you decline a typical day?

No day is really alike. The only common denominator is that the activity is very strong. Here is a digest of my last hours: yesterday, I was at the Emirate of Dubai to participate in the big tourism fair "Arabian travel market", this morning, I attended the Abu Dhabi Book Fair where the Louvre Abu Dhabi had its stand, a little before our interview, I discussed with my teams on the management of the air conditioning system for the hot summer ... I'm "in the oven and mill" at the service of this magnificent project.

5
Louvre Abu Dhabi self-portrait of Master Van Gogh @Louvre Abu Dhabi
How will the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum evolve in the medium term?

Loans are planned for ten years, we must anticipate this deadline. This implies that we must continue our acquisitions, diversify our exhibitions by always digging our scientific rigor and, also, continue to welcome all audiences. Over the next decade, we will work to build a leading Louvre Abu Dhabi collection.

A Missão Universalista do Museu do Louvre, Abu Dhabi. Entrevista.

No total Temos 300 empréstimos, 280 aquisições no Louvre Abu Dhabi e 20 empréstimos regionais.

Eu estou "no forno e moinho" a serviço deste magnífico projeto.

5
Louvre Abu Dhabi auto-retrato do Mestre Van Gogh @Louvre Abu Dhabi

Louver Abu Dhabi

Louvre Abu Dhabi.
