O diretor do prestigiado Museu Britânico, Neil MacGregor, vai para Berlim, e um especialista em arte alemão, Hartwig Fischer, o substituirá. Ele será o primeiro estrangeiro à frente da instituição em mais de 200 anos.

Em abril passado, o atual diretor do renomado Museu Britânico, Neil MacGregor, anunciou que estava deixando a instituição para dirigir o conselho consultivo do Fórum Humboldt, responsável pela reconstrução do Palácio de Berlim.

O museu passou cinco meses à procura de um substituto. Na última sexta-feira (25/09), o jornal britânico The Times informou que os contatos de Neil MacGregor com instituições culturais germânicas podem ter contribuído para que o nome do sucessor tenha sido encontrado na Alemanha.

Segundo reportagens da mídia britânica, os diretores optaram por eleger o historiador da arte alemão Hartwig Fischer como sucessor de MacGregor, uma decisão que ainda tem que ser aprovada pelo primeiro-ministro em Londres.

Atualmente, Fischer é o diretor-geral da Coleção Estatal de Arte de Dresden, que engloba 14 museus e é considerada uma das principais instituições de arte do mundo. Acredita-se que ele vá assumir o seu novo cargo em dezembro próximo.

O Museu Britânico é um dos mais renomados museus do mundo. Anualmente, ele atrai 6,7 milhões de visitantes. A última vez que um estrangeiro esteve à frente da instituição foi em 1772.

Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum

Neil MacGregor has been Director of the British Museum since August 2002 and has devoted particular attention to developing the Museum’s regional and international partnerships.

Neil recently announced that he is to step down from his position at the British Museum at the end of 2015.

Neil sits on the International Advisory Board of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. In 2010 the British Museum and the BBC worked together on a project telling A History of the World in 100 objects. In 2012 another BBC radio series,Shakespeare’s Restless World, was broadcast and the accompanying book was published in September 2012. The most recent collaboration, Germany: memories of a nation, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in autumn 2014 and the accompanying book was published in November 2014.

Neil studied at Oxford and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, before going to the Courtauld Institute of Art in London to study 17th and 19th-century art. He was for six years a lecturer in the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Reading and a part-time lecturer at the Courtauld. In 1981 he became Editor of the arts periodicalThe Burlington Magazine. He became Director of the National Gallery in 1987.
