Das Lindenau-Museum beherbergt eine der kostbarsten Spezialsammlungen früher italienischer Tafelbilder weltweit. Die auf Holz gemalten Bilder des 13. bis 16. Jahrhunderts zeigen die Entwicklung der italienischen Malerei und begründen den internationalen Rang des Museums. Sie sind dem Naturwissenschaftler, Staatsmann und Mäzen Bernhard August von Lindenau (1779 – 1854) zu verdanken und seit 1848 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich.
Lindenau trug außerdem antike Keramiken, Gipsabgüsse und eine wertvolle Kunstbibliothek zusammen und gründete eine Zeichenschule. Seine Sammlungen, die er testamentarisch dem Herzogtum Sachsen-Altenburg vermachte, sind heute in dem 1876 eröffneten prachtvollen Neorenaissance-Gebäude am Fuße des Schlossparks zu besichtigen.
Ergänzend kommen Kollektionen mit deutscher, italienischer, niederländischer und französischer Malerei des 16. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, deutscher Malerei des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts sowie Plastik, vorwiegend des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, hinzu. Nach 1945 wurde vor allem Graphik und Malerei von Künstlern aus Berlin, Chemnitz, Dresden und Leipzig gesammelt.
Ein Schwerpunkt bei Malerei und Graphik liegt auf der Kunst der 1920er Jahre und der Klassischen Moderne. In der Graphischen Sammlung befindet sich eine der umfangreichsten Kollektionen von illustrierten Mappenwerken des Spätexpressionismus und der Neuen Sachlichkeit.
Zudem besitzt das Museum den weltweit größten Bestand von Werken Gerhard Altenbourgs (1926 – 1989).
Dem Museum ist eine Kunstschule, das Studio Bildende Kunst, angegliedert – eine deutschlandweit einzigartige Einrichtung. Das Studio Bildende Kunst steht in der Tradition der von Lindenau gegründeten Kunst- und Gewerbeschule. Künstler führen begabte und interessierte Kinder und Jugendliche an die Kunst heran und unterweisen sie in verschiedenen künstlerischen Techniken. Auch Kurse für Erwachsene werden angeboten.
In der Zusammenarbeit von Kunstschule und Museumspädagogik bietet das Museum ein breit gefächertes museumspädagogisches Angebot mit Theorie und Praxis. Auf aktuelle Sonderausstellungen wird ebenso reagiert wie an bundesweiten Projekten teilgenommen. Neben langjährige Kooperationen mit Schulen treten spezielle Ferienworkshops.
In Sonderausstellungen wird an die reichhaltigen Bestände der Lindenauschen Sammlungen ebenso angeknüpft wie an die neueren Kollektionen, insbesondere die Graphische Sammlung. Lindenau und Altenbourg bilden die Schwerpunkte, auch Bezüge zur zeitgenössischen Kunst werden immer wieder hergestellt. Hierzu trägt vor allem auch der alle zwei Jahre vergebene Gerhard-Altenbourg-Preis bei.
Im Wechsel dazu wird das Bernhard von Lindenau Stipendium an Absolventinnen und Absolventen von Kunsthochschulen in Mitteldeutschland vergeben.
Dank der Verbindung der Lindenauschen mit den neueren Sammlungen Kollektionen ist ein Gang durch die Kunstgeschichte von Ägypten und Assyrien über die griechische Antike und italienische Renaissance bis zur Kunst der Gegenwart möglich.
Das Lindenau-Museum Altenburg wurde 2001 in das so genannte „Blaubuch“ aufgenommen und ist seit 2002 Mitglied der Konferenz nationaler Kultureinrichtungen. Es gehört zu den 23 national bedeutsamen Kultureinrichtungen Ostdeutschlands.

The Lindenau Museum houses one of the most precious special collections of early Italian panel paintings worldwide.
