In 2005, after graduating in History at USP, the daughter of Russians Daniela Mountian and a friend journalist had the idea of opening a publishing house. Soon, the friend left for the Czech Republic and left the dream behind, but Daniela's father, Moissei Mountian, 69, who had already instituted "Kalinka" as the ideal name of the new home became Daniela's effective trading partner - besides translator, editorial advisor, coeditor etc.
From then on, it would still take three years for "Kalinka Editora" to publish its first title, but the debut was memorable: the first literary translation of Moissei into Portuguese, "O Diabo Mesquinho" by Fiódor Sologub, has already entered the Top 10 of the year's best translations of the 2009 Jabuti Prize.
"My idea was basically to focus on books that were not edited in the Soviet Union. These titles were not necessarily anti-Soviet, but they were against the prevailing ideology, "says Moissei, an avid devourer of literature.
"At that time, there was the idea of socialist realism, instituted in the 1930s, and everything had to be written according to this theory. So my goal was to publish these semi-secret writers, who were banned, or who were published before that theory and then stopped being so. "
"The Little Devil" lives up to Moisei's editorial scope. One of the central figures of Russian symbolism, Sologub (1863-1927) took ten years to write the title between 1892 and 1902. But despite having received with hope the February revolution, he began to express feelings openly opposed to the Bolsheviks in His newspaper articles from the summer of 1917.
Thus, it has ceased to be published, and after numerous failed attempts to leave Soviet Russia, his wife, Anastassia Tchebotarévskaia commits suicide - despite all the ties they had with the left, since she had a brother executed, another warrant for the Exile, and a related sister of Lunatcharski, while the writer met with this and Trotsky, as well as many other leaders of the left, especially abroad, between 1911 and 1914.

The beginning of everything
Engineer by training, Moisei arrived in Brazil with the wife in the end of 1972, to the 25 years, changing to Soviet Moldavia by the dictatorship Médici.
"I came, first, because we had a bit of luck, because at that time nobody left, except some expelled," he says, adding that he already had an uncle here.
In the country, the pair of engineers soon got into the market and learned Portuguese very fast, even though they only knew Russian: both being avid readers and the daily contact at work facilitated the adaptation.
Daniela, 40, is the second of the couple's three children, and was not formally educated in Russian until the idea of "Kalinka" came up.
"Even in 2005, my father passed through Maria Antonia Street and saw a 'Russian Course with a USP teacher' sign. It was then that a fundamental person came into our lives, Professor Aurora Bernardini, "he says.
It was with her that Daniela began attending classes at the University of São Paulo, where she joined the master's degree and later, she graduated. As a consequence, he also visited the country several times in scholarly exchanges and in the archives on Daniil Kharms (1905-1942), object of his doctorate and author that yielded another indication of the "Kalinka" to the Jabuti, with the version to six hands "Your dreams will end you," coined by Daniela, Moissei and Aurora.
Worshiped in the academy and out of it, Bernardini assisted in the production of the first book, which she reviewed, and many others. She also brought in ideas of titles, such as the coming memories of Nina Berbérova (1901-1993) - the writer of the first wave of Russian emigrants who lived in Paris and Berlin, and finally settled in the States United.

"It is very interesting how Berbérova describes life before the revolution and his meetings with writers and poets - Búnin, among others - the Russian elite who lived in Paris," says Moissei.
Another important figure in Kalinka's life is Daniela's mother, Sofia Mountian, who already had a publishing house, part of her self-knowledge school "Solaris Institute".
Titles, Flip and partnerships

Logo, o amigo partiu para a República Tcheca e deixou o sonho para trás, mas o pai de Daniela, Moissei Mountian, 69, que já havia instituído “Kalinka” como o nome ideal da nova casa tornou-se o parceiro comercial efetivo de Daniela – além de tradutor, conselheiro editorial, coeditor etc.
A partir dali, ainda levaria três anos para que a “Editora Kalinka” publicasse seu primeiro título, mas a estreia foi memorável: a primeira tradução literária de Moissei para o português, “O Diabo Mesquinho”, de Fiódor Sologub, já entrou para o top 10 de melhores traduções do ano do Prêmio Jabuti de 2009.
“Minha ideia era, basicamente, focar livros que não eram editados na União Soviética. Esses títulos não eram necessariamente antissoviéticos, mas iam de encontro à ideologia vigente”, conta Moissei, um ávido devorador de literatura.
“Naquela época, existia a ideia do realismo socialista, instituída nos anos 1930, e tudo precisava ser escrito conforme essa teoria. Então meu objetivo era publicar esses escritores semiclandestinos, que foram proibidos, ou que eram publicados antes dessa teoria e depois deixaram de sê-lo”, completa.
“O Diabo Mesquinho” faz jus ao escopo editorial de Moissei. Uma das figuras centrais do simbolismo russo, Sologub (1863-1927) levou dez anos para escrever o título, entre 1892 e 1902. Mas, apesar de ter recebido com esperança a revolução de fevereiro, ele passa a expressar sentimentos abertamente contrários aos bolcheviques em seus artigos de jornal a partir do verão de 1917.
Assim, deixou de ser publicado e, depois de inúmeras tentativas frustradas de deixarem a Rússia soviética, sua mulher, Anastassia Tchebotarévskaia comete suicídio – apesar de todos os laços que tinham com a esquerda, já que ela teve um irmão executado, outro mandado para o exílio, e uma irmã aparentada de Lunatcharski, enquanto o escritor encontrava-se com esse e Trótski, além de muitos outros líderes da esquerda, sobretudo no exterior, entre 1911 e 1914.

O começo de tudo
Engenheiro por formação, Moissei chegou ao Brasil com a esposa no final de 1972, aos 25 anos, trocando a Moldávia soviética pela ditadura Médici.
“Vim, primeiro, porque tivemos um pouco de sorte, porque naquela época ninguém saía de lá, a não ser alguns expulsos”, conta, acrescentando que já tinha um tio por aqui.
No país, o casal de engenheiros logo se colocou no mercado e aprendeu o português muito rápido, apesar de antes só conhecer o russo: tanto o fato de serem ávidos leitores, como o contato diário no trabalho facilitaram a adaptação.
Daniela, 40, é a segunda de três filhos do casal, e não era educada formalmente no russo até surgir a ideia da “Kalinka”.
“Ainda em 2005, meu pai passava pela rua Maria Antonia e viu uma placa ‘Curso de Russo com professora da USP’. Foi então que uma pessoa fundamental entrou na nossa vida, a professora Aurora Bernardini”, conta.
Foi com ela que Daniela começou a frequentar as aulas da Universidade de São Paulo, onde ingressou no mestrado e, posteriormente, doutorou-se. Como consequência, também visitou o país diversas vezes em intercâmbios acadêmicos e para pesquisas nos arquivos sobre Daniil Kharms (1905-1942), objeto de seu doutorado e autor que rendeu mais uma indicação da "Kalinka" ao Jabuti, com a versão a seis mãos de "Os sonhos teus vão acabar contigo", cunhada por Daniela, Moissei e Aurora.
Cultuada na academia e fora dela, Bernardini auxiliou na produção do primeiro livro, que revisou, e de muitos outros. Ela também trouxe ideias de títulos, como as vindouras memórias, que ela mesma verteu ao português, de Nina Berbérova (1901-1993) - escritora da primeira leva de emigrantes russos que viveu em Paris e Berlim até, finalmente, estabelecer-se nos Estados Unidos.

“É muito interessante como Berbérova descreve nesse livro a vida antes da revolução e seus encontros com escritores e poetas – Búnin, entre outros -, a elite russa que morava em Paris”, conta Moissei.
Outra figura importante na vida da “Kalinka” é a mãe de Daniela, Sofia Mountian, que já tinha uma editora, parte de sua escola de autoconhecimento “Instituto Solaris”.
Títulos, Flip e parcerias
Depois de “Parque Cultural”, de Serguêi Dovlátov (1941-1990), lançado no final do ano passado, mais dois títulos do escritor foram adquiridos pela editora, um deles, a sair ainda em 2017. De geração já bem posterior, o autor realiza uma dolorosa emigração para os Estados Unidos em 1979, e “Parque cultural” traz muitos elementos autobiográficos dessa transição em prol da sobrevivência de Dovlátov como escritor.
Além dos próximos títulos dele, “O ofício” e “A troca”, a editora também já está finalizando a produção de “Salmo”, de Naum Gorenshtein (1932-2002), traduzido a quatro mãos por Moissei e outro finalista do Jabuti de tradução, Irineu Franco Perpétuo, 46, namorado de Daniela.

“Gorenshtein é mais conhecido por ter sido roteirista de Tarkóvski em ‘Solaris’ e, apesar de não ter sido creditado, em ‘Andrêi Rublióv’. É um grande investimento nosso, porque é um autor difícil, um livro de 400 páginas, polêmico, denso, e contemporâneo”, explica Daniela.
Além disso, com o anúncio de uma nova parceria da “Kalinka” com a editora “Hedra” em um “laboratório editorial”, as duas terão uma casa conjunta na Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty.
“Não fazia sentido irmos sozinhos à Flip, e a ‘Kalinka’ irá conosco. Lá, a Daniela e o Irineu Franco Perpétuo também participarão de uma mesa”, conta o editor-fundador da Hedra, Jorge Sallum, 44.
O acordo de dois anos firmado entre as editoras segue os moldes de outro, fechado entra a “Hedra” e a “Demônio Negro”, e visa a otimizar a captação de recursos, impressão, distribuição e divulgação das obras.
