The second edition of the Tefaf / New York art fair ended on Wednesday, 1st, on historic Park Avenue Armory, after six days of great sales, bringing together 95 of the most important art and antiques dealerships. The Dutch fair, held every March in Maastricht, The Netherlands, and now twice a year in New York, hosted guests such as actress Drew Barrymore and architect Peter Marino, as well as representatives of the Bavarian National Museum (Munich, Germany), the Dallas Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, CA) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among other institutions.
One of the most important sales made at Tefaf / New York was by Carlo Orsi of Trinity Fine Art (Italy), who sold a plaster copy of the Rezzonico Genio (1793) sculpture by Anthony Canova (1757-1822) that can be the only work of its kind on the market, for an approximate price of $ 4 million.
Other important sales included a bronze Female Head of the American sculptor of Polish origin Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), modeled between 1910 and 1911 and cast before 1915 for a value close to $ 200,000. Charles Ede sold several works for values of more than six figures, including an Egyptian statue of Naophoros of the 18th Dynasty (ca. 1400 BCE), worth about $ 350,000 to a young collector in the early hours of the fair.
Among other ancient works sold at Tefaf were four Greek vessels, purchased by a well-known collector, two of which were intended for a museum; and, also on the first day, a Roman statuette of Mercury, in bronze, almost certainly of Gaul, for US $ 120 thousand. Sales continued over the weekend, including an Egyptian limestone relief for $ 125,000 for a young couple, and an antique Greek bronze for $ 225,000.
Among the ancient masters were sold works by Ghirlandaio (by Haboldt & Co.) and ll Padovanino (1588-1649), who was influenced by Titian and other masters of Mannerism. The sale was made by Robert Simon Fine Art (USA, booth 19). Many gallerists have stated that this was the best edition of Tefaf in New York.
