Film and photo

The documentary shows Candisani's search for her photographs, always accompanied by Lygia's cameras. Both share their creative motives in interpreting the story of these women before their lenses. The result is a rare film, in which two languages ​​of different times, cinema and photography, complement each other in favor of a touching narrative on an intriguing theme.

Candisani, who also has a visceral connection with the ocean and for years research traditional populations that extract the sustenance from the sea, interact with the ladies inside and outside the water and, little by little, constructs a photographic essay of rare beauty on the unusual way of these women's lives.

"One day, I had a haenyeo in the sea and the waves broke hard in the sea. I struggled to get out of the water. I cut myself on the volcanic and sharp stones. This lady, however, knew how to understand the waves, the wind and the rocks, and simply walked away with absolute elegance through a safe passage on the slope. That is, strength lies in wisdom, not in muscles, "says Candisani.

Their images are different from everything that has already been produced on the subject, especially with regard to the core of the activity: the work of divers on the seabed. Women up to 90 years old are adapted to a routine of daily diving with about five hours of water. They go up to 12 meters deep only with the air of the lungs, hunt great octopuses, harpoon fish and collect seafood in an arduous activity, exercised by them with mastery.

The film and the photographic essay count, with much visual poetry, universal themes, such as tradition, culture, longevity, belonging, sustainability and the strength of women.

Inédito, “Haenyeo – a Força do Mar”, da diretora Lygia Barbosa, revela história secular pelo olhar do premiado fotógrafo brasileiro Luciano Candisani; produção terá exibição gratuita no domingo (4), em São Paulo, Brasil.

No Dia Internacional da Mulher, 8 de março às 20h15, a National Geographic homenageia a data com a estreia do documentário “Haenyeo – a Força do Mar”, produção brasileira original com direção da documentarista Lygia Barbosa.

O filme terá uma pré-estreia no Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS), instituição da Secretaria da Cultura do Estado de São Paulo, no dia 4 de março (domingo). A sessão, gratuita, acontece às 18h, no Auditório MIS (172 lugares) e será seguida por debate com a diretora Lygia Barbosa e do fotógrafo Luciano Candisani. O ingresso deve ser retirado com uma hora de antecedência na recepção do Museu.

Parceira do National Geographic de longa data (sua primeira produção foi “Caminhos de Che”, em 2007) Lygia conta, por meio do olhar do premiado fotógrafo brasileiro Luciano Candisani, a história das corajosas haenyeos, as mulheres do mar da ilha de Jeju, na Coreia do Sul, que mantêm uma tradição secular: mergulhar utilizando apenas o ar de seus pulmões para colher frutos do mar.

Com essa atividade é que elas obtêm sustento para criar seus filhos e cuidar de suas famílias. Entretanto, a cultura das haenyeos, reconhecida pela Unesco como patrimônio imaterial da humanidade, está em declínio. Mais de 80% das mergulhadoras têm entre 65 e 90 anos de idade e atualmente quase não há jovens ingressando na atividade.

Para Lygia, o maior desafio do filme foi o acesso à intimidade das haenyeos. Durante as pesquisas para as filmagens, a diretora deparou-se com diversos relatos de que elas eram reservadas e difíceis. “Eu e Luciano tivemos que vencer esta resistência, além da barreira da língua, para conquistarmos confiança e entrarmos na intimidade delas. Só assim pudemos contar esta história e revelar a força e o encantamento que estas mulheres têm”, diz.

Filme e foto

O documentário mostra a busca de Candisani por suas fotografias, sempre acompanhado pelas câmeras de Lygia. Ambos compartilham suas motivações criativas ao interpretar a história dessas mulheres diante de suas lentes. O resultado é um filme raro, no qual duas linguagens de tempos diferentes, o cinema e a fotografia, se complementam em favor de uma narrativa comovente sobre um tema intrigante.

Candisani, que também tem uma ligação visceral com o oceano e há anos pesquisa populações tradicionais que extraem do mar o sustento, interage com as senhoras dentro e fora d´agua e, aos poucos, constrói um ensaio fotográfico de rara beleza sobre o inusitado modo de vida dessas mulheres.

“Certo dia, eu estava com uma haenyeo no mar e as ondas quebravam forte no costão. Sofri para sair da água. Eu me cortei nas pedras vulcânicas e afiadas. Aquela senhora, porém, soube entender as ondas, o vento e as pedras e simplesmente saiu andando com elegância absoluta por uma passagem segura na encosta. Ou seja, a força está na sabedoria, não nos músculos”, relata Candisani.

Suas imagens são diferentes de tudo o que já se produziu sobre o tema, sobretudo no que se refere ao cerne da atividade: o trabalho das mergulhadoras no fundo do mar. São mulheres de até 90 anos adaptadas a uma rotina de mergulhos diários com cerca de cinco horas de permanência na água. Elas vão a até 12 metros de profundidade só com o ar dos pulmões, caçam grandes polvos, arpoam peixes e coletam frutos do mar em uma atividade árdua, exercida por elas com maestria.

O filme e o ensaio fotográfico contam, com muita poesia visual, temas universais, como tradição, cultura, longevidade, pertencimento, sustentabilidade e a força da mulher.
