Legendary Dorothy Miller (1904-2003) led the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in acquiring the core of a world class collection of American Modernist paintings by artists including Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko, Willem deKooning and many others. She worked at MOMA for 35 years from 1934 to 1969, the first curator hired by Alfred Barr, founding director of the Museum.
Miller,during her career at MOMA, organized over 100 exhibitions of American Modernist artists. As the first curator of contemporary art in the United States, Miller was a ground breaker, as most other American museums had not yet accepted the legitimacy of the American Modernist movement. Miller’s efforts are recognized as significantly contributing to a cataclysmic shift in the understanding and appreciation of American contemporary art during her tenure at MOMA.
Wendy Jeffers is a renowned scholar in the art of the American Modernist movement. She is an expert on the life of Dorothy Miller, whom she knew for over 30 years, and is working on a Miller biography. In addition, on the subject of the American Modernist movement, she has given lectures, written articles, organized exhibitions and made herself available to organizations involved in one way or another in the Modernist movement. She has also written widely on American Folk Art. Recently she was elected chair of the Board of Trustees of the Archives of American Art, a very distinguished position in an important organization under the Smithsonian Institute that collects and disseminates primary documents for research on American art.
Ms. Jeffers’ lecture will be about Dorothy Miller and how she helped to create the audience for the new American painting and sculpture through her pioneering exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art.
