Lubuskie Muzeum Wojskowe swoje korzenie wywodzi z Muzeum Ziemi Lubuskiej w Zielonej Górze, lecz swoją historię rozpoczęło po przejęciu  w 1978 roku zdewastowanego pałacu w miejscowości Drzonów... 

Prace adaptacyjne i remontowe trwały do 1985 roku, w którym oficjalnie otwarto nową placówkę muzealną. Jednak eksponaty napływały już od samego początku. Pierwszymi z nich stały się już w 1978 roku czołg średni T-34/85, śmigłowiec SM-2 oraz samolot bombowy Ił-28...
