In March 2009 by the initiative of first lady Mehriban Aliyeva and with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Fund the Museum of Modern Art has been opened in Baku, Azerbaijan.

There is no fixed subject area in the Museum, no imposed routes. Any of two points, two exhibits, and two segments of the Museum are interconnected. The idea of architectural concept of the Museum – the halls with no corner, open passages, inclined walls under various angle – allows to create multidimensional perspective view of pictures, there is a semblance of motion, and metal beams and designs placed all over the space unite all the parts into a single "moving abstract structure.” There are no confined spaces in the Museum. A two-storey building is designed as a whole with an architectural linking device – an art-object of “forgotten staircase”. The author of the Museum concept, architecture and design, the collection and exposition selection is the artist Altay Sadikh-zadeh.

The museum openness to new trends and experiments gives a possibility to get acquainted more closely with peculiar works of such artists, as Rasim Babayev, Ashraf Murad, Gennady Brejatjuk, Fazil Najafov, Mamed Mustafaev, Aga Oussejnov, Ali Ibadullaev, Mir-Nadir Zeynalov, Fuad Salayev, Farhad Halilov, Darvin Velibekov, Eldar Mamedov, Mikail Abdurahmanov, Museib Amirov, Mahmud Rustamov, Huseyn Hagverdi, Eliyar Alimirzayev, Rashad Babayev, Altay Sadikh-zadeh whose works in the context of the Azerbaijan painting of 1960-70s amaze with the novel approach. The project’s main objective is the protection and development of the Azerbaijan school of painting, including the support program of young, bright and already recognized artists, such as Niyaz Najafov, Rashad Babayev, Vugar Muradov, whose works are also exposed in our Museum. Nevertheless, the Museum exposition has products of great European masters – founders of avant-garde style in the world art – Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Marc Chagall. Also the classics of the western realism are presented by several pictures from private collection. In the concept of the Museum the key idea was a special approach in the formation of a special space for framing of modern Azerbaijan art, avoiding of analogy to well known modern European museums.

The Azerbaijan fine arts could be named as “internal memory” of our people. Also the collection of Azerbaijan classics of figurative art in this period is presented, they are: Sattar Bahlulzade, Tair Salahov, Mikail Abdullaev, Huseyn Aliev, Tagi Tagiev, Nadir Abdurahmanov, Elmira Shahtahtinskaya, Nadir Kasumov, Oktay Sadikh-zadeh, Tokay Mamedov, Togrul Narimanbekov, Omar Eldarov. The Museum of Modern Art is an original well of masterpieces of the modern epoch, presenting over 800 works of art of the Azerbaijan artists and sculptors of the last 70 years. The part of the exposition includes "the unknown" layer of national art referring to the layer of "another" art, generated at period of the Soviet regime. These are unique works of Ashraf Murad, Kamal Ahmed, Mirjavad Javad, Rasim Babayev, which have been rescued by the Museum from inevitable destruction. The presence at the exposition of the works of these masters is a tribute of historical justice.

Contrary to classical museum traditions, the exposition proceeds even out of the exhibition space, being present at spaces of art cafe and the restaurant, included into Museum structure. In the Museum also takes place the exposition of children’s fine arts, giving possibility for development children’s interests and familiarizing them with the world of beauty; a video-hall meant for display of documentaries; exhibition hall for private exhibitions, and also a library and a bookshop in which the collection of books on world art, architecture and sculpture are presented for the visitors of the Museum.

Another joining factor is the color –every part of the museum is white. The museum itself is a showcase of avant-guard art with its free architectural forms, conspicuous metallic structures, a well-chosen and artistically designed exposition of paintings and sculptures.

In the entrance of the museum there is a wardrobe where you need to leave your outerwear. The check is better to leave in your handbag or pocket.

Considering exhibits, please keep restrained while expressing your delight or disagreement both in words and in gestures and mimicry. Viewing the exposition please be quiet. You can discuss the displays in a low voice, sharing impressions with your companion, but don’t impose your opinion on them. Try not to argue by all means.

Do not approach to other visitors too close in a museum. If you wish to approach closer to any exhibit or a picture, but see someone already standing there, please wait until that person will walk away.

There is no need to approach the pictures too close, blocking the view for other spectators. It is better to observe some pictures from afar (for example, works of impressionists or pictures of big sizes).

It is strongly forbidden to touch the exhibits in a museum.

There is no need to visit museums keeping a noisy company or after getting any alcohol drink –you will hardly have an appropriate mood for the correct perception of museum displays.

You may buy the museum booklet to keep received impressions for a long time, and then you can easily recollect all that have been seen.

The Museum basis - is the collection of the best works of painting and sculpture of Azerbaijan avant-gardists from 2nd half of the 20th century up to now. The collection of paintings and sculptures reflect aspiration, strivings and freedom of human soul. In accordance with world art wholeness the Museum also exhibits the works of art of European classics, as well as the masterpieces of the Western avant-garde of Picasso, Mark Shagall, and Salvador Dali are presented from private collections. Also the collection of Azerbaijan classics of figurative art in this period is presented, they are: Tair Salakhov, Sattar Bakhlulzade, Mikail Abdullayev, Guseyn Aliyev, Tagi Tagiyev, Nadir Abdurraxmanov, Elmira Shaxtaxtinskaya, Nadir Kasimov, Oktay Sadikhzadeh, Tokay Mammadov, Togrul Narimanbekov, Omar Eldarov and many others. As an example of the creative beginning the children’s fine arts are presented in the Museum. The art-café and restaurant, included in Museum structure, continue an exposition of artists-avant-gardists. Also there is a bookstore on fine art and architecture, exhibition salon, art gallery and video hall.

The Azerbaijan avant-garde is a vivid and viable phenomenon. Together with the world artists Azerbaijan painters interpret World Art heritage, letting it through their vision of modern pace of life, being inspired with the rhythms of present time, revealing the energy of space and encirclement, apprehending the new and unidentified by intuition, professionally removing all barriers and cliché, - each of them creates an individual aesthetic reality. The main idea of creativity initially assumes the freedom of self-expression; it’s out of standards and conjuncture.

Avant-garde has always been a way to spiritual freedom and new horizons, a contact with the energy of eternity, a new quest in the depth of our abilities, it is our mood, warmth and humaneness, fears and hopes, our endless fantasy. It is an infinite expressiveness of free forms, inexhaustible means of abstract self-sufficiency of lines and pictorial color spots which render images. It is deeply emotional world harmony concealed by outer forms of images. This is the very art that is presented in the permanent museum exposition, which includes the works of such painters like: Rasim Babayev, Ashraf Murad, Gennadiy Brejatyuk, Fazil Najafov, Mamed Mustafayev, Aga Ousseinov, Ali Ibadullayev, Mir Nadir Zeynalov, Fuad Salayev, Farxad Xalilov, Darvin Velibekov, Eldar Mammadov, Mikayil Abdurakhmanov, Museib Amirov, Makhmud Rustamov, Husein Hagverdi, Eliyar Alimirzayev, Rashad Babayev, Altay Sadikhzadeh, and others.
