O alcance desse ato.”

On April 9, 1914, a woman identified sometimes as Clara Lambert entered the British Museum in London, and attacked with a hatchet carrying concealed several showcases of Asian hall, causing partial destruction of an ancient porcelain tea set Chinese. It was not an isolated act. Other women at the same time attacked and damaged works of art in other British museums, destroyed shop windows, threw acid in mailboxes and cut wires of communication systems, among other acts that in Brazil today would be called pure vandalism. However, were not acts of pure vandalism. These women were part of an organized political movement that fought and finally won the right of women's suffrage. In England, the right to vote was obtained for all women over 21 years only in 1928.

These women were known as suffragettes, and are the subject of a feature-length movie now in theaters, The Suffragettes (2015), Sarah Gavron, which by the way does not even mention the symbolic and espetaculosos attacks on works of art (read review here) . The suffrage movement also echoed in Rio de Janeiro, then capital of the Republic, and resulted in the right of women's suffrage in Brazil in 1932.

Among the artists who have works attacked in England are Giovanni Bellini, George Frederic Watts and Diego Velázquez. Venus painting the Mirror (1647-1651), Velazquez, suffered seven butcher knife blows, brandished the bare back of the goddess by Mary Richardson, in the National Gallery in London, on March 10, 1914 (the image of the work damaged is the cover of this edition deselect). "Justice is an element of beauty, as are the color and the trace on the screen," said Richardson, who defined the trademarks of their hits as "hieroglyphs" with POTENTIAL to express something for future generations.

The Royal Academy, the Royal Academy Scottisch, Dare Gallery, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and especially the Manchester Art Gallery are other institutions affected by militant fury. Until an Egyptian mummy had to showcase attacked the British Museum. In this case, one does not know the sex of the mummy, which remained intact. Perhaps the mummy was not the target, but the fact of being in a British museum.

To identify these women and prevent new attacks, Scotland Yard acquired his first camera, to which the suffragettes, photographed against their will, reacted with closed eyes and puckered mouths. Today, photos are part of the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.

A tea set is never just a tea set, note the visual artist Carla Zaccagnini, author of a facility that is being presented in the MASP and the São Paulo Museum titled as Feminist Stories. In short, the installation of Carla Zaccagnini, in the museum's basement mezzanine, show the outlines of the works attacked by suffragettes in real size in the case of the information available, or only numbering. Beyond the fenced grounds, visitors will have access to 29 audios to listen to iPods provided by the museum. Lasting between 48 seconds 2min59s each for a total of just over an hour of recording, Carla and Naomi Jaffe writer take turns telling stories of the time, the details of attacks, arrests, processes, defenses and who it was the women who carried out these stories and provide information on the situation of women and speculate on the thematic choices of attack works. The text and narration are more than interesting.

"I was studying crimes related to art, vandalism, forgery and theft, because I interested in these times when the relationship with art goes beyond what society permits," said Zaccagnini in an interview. "What temna art that makes people suddenly bother with either an image about to play acid? They carry a naarte belief that seems very fascinating. "

Among the stories, Zaccagnini remember that cháera an imperial product of England, collected by colonial hands. While the populace followed the rule of the milk first, serving cold milk before Docha hot to not crack a slut dishes, the "right circles" served tea first as a symbol of distinction, since its porcelain superior resist.

"Many of the works they attacked represent women, some are naked women, other women are in a moment of prayer, playing an instrument or reading. Women in social roles accepted at that time, or mythological characters whose existence is defined in terms of a male role. Imagine someone enters a museum with a escondidana knife sleeve, a knife, an ax, and then arrives in front of a painting, let this deal slip to the hand and design the body in relation to the painting, it all has a certain with respect to the body that is very powerful and queo book Elements of Beauty (artist's book, 2012) laid aside. That's when I thought about doing this installation, a drawing space that occupy these objects if they were exposed here. This design gives the volume of the notion that it had. The scope of this act. "
