A Fundação do Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Letônia selecionou o escritório Adjaye Associates para liderar o projeto para um novo museu de arte contemporânea no centro da cidade de Riga. Escolhido entre um grupo de 7 finalistas, dentre os quais wHY e Lahdelma & Mahlamäki, o projeto vencedor apresenta uma cobertura de geometria extremamente dinâmica, concebida para introduzir a suave luz do norte em cada espaço da galeria.

Adjaye Associates, trabalhando junto com o escritório local AB3D, pensou no museu como uma incubadora social, um espaço convidativo e permeável, onde as pessoas poderiam se reunir por meio de uma variedade de interações formais e espontâneas. O júri achou que a silhueta distinta da proposta daria ao museu uma presença forte dentro de seu contexto de empreendimentos comerciais e residenciais planejados e que sua orientação e materialidade mostraram uma consciência aguçada de contextos vernáculos e culturais.

"A proposta vencedora é uma resposta bela e poética ao desafio das demandas do projeto, mas acima de tudo, é específico para Riga", disse David Bickle, presidente do júri. "A equipe realmente entendeu o efeito da tênue luz do norte, ao experimentar e criar arte e esta ideia foi a inspiração para o projeto. Através do uso de madeira e formas, o conceito sutilmente faz referência à arquitetura da Letônia, propondo uma estrutura bastante dinâmica com uma entrada vibrante que permitirá ao museu criar uma presença arquitetônica em uma região nova e fervilhante. O projeto é bastante convidativo e permeável – com potencial para ser muito apreciado".


O Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Letônia será localizado num novo centro empresarial e de lazer de Riga, conhecido como New Hanza City (NHC), um empreendimento de 24,5 hectares no terreno da antiga estação de trens da cidade. O projeto será acompanhado pela sede da ABLV Bank, um hotel, centro de conferências, um setor residencial, uma pré-escola e jardins urbanos para recreação. O novo museu tem um orçamento de cerca de 30 milhões de Euros e receberá uma coleção única de arte e cultura visual na Letônia e da região do Mar Báltico, que compreende o período desde os anos de 1960 até os dias de hoje.


David Adjaye, Diretor da Adjaye Associates, comentou:

O júri também fez reconhecimentos especiais a Henning Larsen Architects e Sauerbruch Hutton, concedendo menção honrosa à proposta de Sauerbruch Hutton por sua "beleza modesta e lógica anti-icônica".


O museu tem conclusão prevista para novembro de 2021.
