O único museu de história natural do Espírito Santo, o Museu de Biologia Prof. Mello Leitão, instituição com grande respaldo entre a comunidade científica nacional e internacional, está ameaçado de ser extinto e ter seu acervo alienado.
O alerta é da família do naturalista Augusto Ruschi, Patrono da Ecologia do Brasil, e fundador do MBML, em 1949.
Muito além do que vem sendo discutido e tratado burocraticamente em Brasília e divulgado na imprensa e nas redes sociais, a vinculação do Museu ao Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações (MCTI) esconde questões mais profundas e ameaçadoras.

A manutenção da perspectiva institucional (identidade histórica do MBML) deve ser considerada no processo de vínculo ao MCTI”, avalia Piero em uma carta aberta que começa a ser divulgada entre a comunidade científica, os amigos do Museu e a bancada capixaba no Congresso.
“A saúde institucional do Mello Leitão não pode depender da criação de um instituto. Não! A saúde do Mello Leitão só pode depender dele próprio!”, conclama o biólogo.
Doutorando em Zoologia pelo Museu Nacional da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (MN/UFRJ), Piero nunca se afastou totalmente do MBML. O afastamento físico, para estudar biologia, mestrado e doutorado, não impediram sua relação de pesquisador associado ao Mello Leitão. Mas quase o impediram de ver a armadilha em que uma das heranças vivas de seu pai estava sendo envolvida.
Desperto a tempo, ele encabeça uma articulação para impedir a regulamentação da lei que criou o INMA, pelo menos da forma como está. “Estamos trabalhando nas falhas dessa negociação, feita inclusive por pessoas relacionadas ao Movimento em Defesa do INMA - MoveINMA. Mais do que falhas, vejo mesmo como incompetência”, desabafa Piero. “Como alguém pode querer a extinção do Mello Leitão?”, indigna-se.
E afirma que o objetivo desta articulação que começa dentro da família de Ruschi, é esclarecer os fatos para que as medidas jurídicas e políticas sejam tomadas. “À medida que a verdade vier à tona, que os senadores, deputados, cientistas e a população passarem a conhecer a verdade, que se posicionem e ajudem a salvar o Mello Leitão, o patrimônio daquele que foi o Patrono da Ecologia do Brasil”, convoca.
