An international conference to reflect and debate new realities, practices and working conditions in 21st century museums will be held between 09 and 10 March 2017 at the Chiado Museum in Lisbon.
Entitled 'The Museum Reader', the international conference is organized by the Institute of Art History of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon and the National Museum of Contemporary Art - Museum of Chiado.
The objective of the meeting of experts is to "propose thematic lines and notable points to think, reflect and debate new realities, practices and working conditions detected in the museums of this century", according to the organization.
"It aims to analyze and systematize new ways and paradigms, trends and different practices and ways of thinking about the role of artistic institutions in the context of the current artistic panorama," adds the museum's press release on the conference.
The focus will be on themes such as "Museums at the turn of the 20th century for the 21st century", "The museum and the neoliberal conception of culture", "The paradigmatic transformations of artistic institutions in the context of the current social, economic and political order" Institutional criticism as an investigation of the contours and functioning of art institutions "and" The museum as a place of negotiation and conflict ".
"The potential of institutions and the new institutional sphere: the new Institutionalism, radical museology, critical museology", "Criticism and experimentation in artistic institutions", "Institutional and non-institutional practices in the museum", "What are the requirements and Challenges of contemporary artistic practices for museums and artistic institutions "and" The future identity of artistic institutions ".
The organizing committee is composed of Sandra Vieira Jürgens, from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the NOVA University of Lisbon, and Emília Tavares, curator of the National Museum of Contemporary Art - Chiado Museum.
The scientific committee includes, among others, David Santos (General Directorate of Cultural Heritage), Fernando José Pereira (Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto), Helena Barranha (Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon), Idalina Conde University of Lisbon), Maria João Gamito (Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon) and Raquel Henriques da Silva (NOVA University of Lisbon).

Novas realidades dos museus do século XXI em debate em Lisboa, Portugal.

Intitulada 'The Museum Reader', a conferência internacional é organizada pelo Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e pelo Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea -Museu do Chiado.
O objetivo do encontro de especialistas é "propor linhas temáticas e pontos notáveis para pensar, refletir e debater novas realidades, práticas e condições de trabalho detetadas nos museus deste século XXI", segundo a organização.
"Pretende-se analisar e sistematizar novos modos e paradigmas, tendências e diferentes práticas e formas de pensar o papel das instituições artísticas no contexto do atual panorama artístico", acrescenta a nota de imprensa do museu sobre a conferência.
Em foco estarão temas como "Os museus na passagem do século XX para o século XXI", "O museu e a conceção neoliberal de cultura", "As transformações paradigmáticas das instituições artísticas no contexto da atual ordem social, económica e política", "A crítica institucional enquanto investigação dos contornos e funcionamento das instituições de arte" e "O museu como lugar de negociação e conflito".
Também serão abordados "O potencial das instituições e a nova esfera institucional: o novo Institucionalismo, a museologia radical, museologia crítica", "Crítica e experimentação nas instituições artísticas", "Práticas institucionais e não institucionais no museu", "Quais as exigências e desafios das práticas artísticas contemporâneas para os museus e instituições artísticas" e "A futura identidade das instituições artísticas".
O comité de organização é composto por Sandra Vieira Jürgens, da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, e Emília Tavares, conservadora do Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea -- Museu do Chiado.
No comité científico estão, entre outros, David Santos (Direção Geral do Património Cultural), Fernando José Pereira (Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto), Helena Barranha (Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa), Idalina Conde (ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa), Maria João Gamito (Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa) e Raquel Henriques da Silva (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa).
