Designed by Balthasar Neumann, stands the largest continuous ceiling fresco in the world, a work of the baroque painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The building housing the Mozart Festival is on Unesco's list of world heritage sites.



The Residence of Würzburg, Würzburg or Vurzburg (German: Würzburger Residenz) is a palace of Germany located in Würzburg, a town located in the administrative region of Lower Franconia, state of Bavaria. It was built by the prince-bishop of Würzburg, Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, and his brother Friedrich Carl von Schönborn between 1720 and 1744.

It was designed by several of the leading architects of the Baroque. Lucas von Hildebrandt and Maximilian von Welsch, representatives of the Baroque prow of Austria / Southern Germany, were involved in its construction, as were Robert de Cotte and Germain Boffrand, prominent architects of the French style. Balthasar Neumann, architect of the court of the bishop of Würzburg, was the principal architect of the residence.



The Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, assisted by his son, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, painted frescoes in the building. Among the most spectacular features of the interior are the grand staircase, the chapel and the large hall. The palace was nicknamed by Napoleon Bonaparte as "the most sympathetic residence of prelates in Europe". The Residence was severely damaged during World War II, with restoration works progressing from 1945.
