The Michael Schumacher museum, dedicated to the private collection of the former German Formula 1 driver, will open its doors in Cologne in April next year, and will do so for free, its agent Sabine Kehm announced today.
"It will be a Grand Prix of memories of two decades and the idea is that people can live a piece of motorsport history," said Sabine Kehm, adding that the permanent exhibition "will be one of the most important in the world in this area."
According to Sabine Kehm, Schumacher's family is "thrilled" with the location chosen at the former Butzweilerhof airport, which is only 30 kilometers from Kerpen, hometown of the former Formula One driver.
Michael Schumacher, 47, a seven-time Formula One world champion, suffered a serious crash on December 29, 2013 while skiing with family and friends in Méribel, France.
Schumacher's brain injuries, which hit the head on a rock, forced him to keep the former driver for several months in an induced coma. In June 2014 she was transferred from France to a Swiss hospital and, since September of that year, she has been in rehab at home in Gland.
The former airport of Butzweilerhof, home to the Michael Schumacher Museum, will house the Motorworld Köln-Rheinland, a meeting point for car lovers, which will open its doors in 2018 with a themed hotel, restaurant and events and conferences.
The entrance to the exhibition, which the promoters hope to attract more than 100,000 visitors per year, will be free, a gesture with which the athlete's family wants to thank the countless followers of the seven-times F1 world champion.
"During the years that he was active, Michael kept most of his cars and many suits and helmets. We have always had in mind to be able to make them accessible to the public, "said Sabine Kehm.
The museum will include, in addition to numerous memorabilia related to the pilot, 20 race cars that were piloted by Michael Schumacher, among them the seven with which he became world champion.
"I am grateful that we can show this collection here," said Cologne's mayor Henriette Reker.

O museu Michael Schumacher, dedicado à coleção particular do ex-piloto alemão de Fórmula 1, abrirá as suas portas em Colónia, em abril do próximo ano, e vai fazê-lo gratuitamente, anunciou hoje a sua agente, Sabine Kehm.
“Será um 'Grand Prix' de memórias de duas décadas e a ideia é que as pessoas possam viver um pedaço de história do automobilismo”, disse Sabine Kehm, acrescentando que a exposição permanente “será uma dos mais importantes do mundo nessa área”.
Segundo Sabine Kehm, a família de Schumacher está “emocionada” com o local escolhido, situado no antigo aeroporto de Butzweilerhof, local que fica apenas a 30 quilómetros de Kerpen, cidade natal do antigo piloto de Fórmula 1.

O antigo aeroporto de Butzweilerhof, onde se situará o museu Michael Schumacher, vai abrigar o Motorworld Köln-Rheinland, um ponto de encontro para os amantes de carros e que irá abrir as suas portas em 2018, com um hotel temático, restaurante e salas de eventos e conferências.
A entrada para a exposição, que os promotores esperam vir a atrair mais de 100 mil visitantes por ano, será livre, gesto com que a família do atleta quer agradecer aos inúmeros seguidores do heptacampeão mundial de F1.
“Durante os anos em que esteve ativo, Michael guardou a maioria dos seus carros e muitos fatos e capacetes. Nós sempre tivemos em mente poder torná-los acessíveis ao público”, disse Sabine Kehm.
O museu incluirá, além de inúmeras recordações relacionadas com o piloto, 20 carros de corrida que foram pilotados por Michael Schumacher, entre os quais os sete com que se sagrou campeão mundial.
"Eu estou grata pelo facto de podermos mostrar esta coleção aqui”, disse, por sua vez, a presidente da câmara de Colônia, Henriette Reker.
