Swedish archaeologists have found evidence of a 5th century massacre on the south-eastern island of Oland.

Team member Clara Alfsdotter arranges the remains of one victim

In a paper published in the journal Antiquity, the team writes about the 1,500 year old attack at Sandby borg.

Dozens of corpses have been found in the walled fort, their bodies left to rot where they fell.

All of the victims were killed with "brutal force", team leader Helena Victor said. Some victims were found inside houses, others in the streets.

The archaeologists discovered decapitated bodies, blunt force trauma wounds to victims' heads, and even one person who seemed to have fallen into a fireplace in his final moments.

Even the corpse of a newborn was found among the dead, suggesting nobody was spared, the authors say.

The perpetrators of the massacre are not known, but it took place during a turbulent period of intense migration, when the Western Roman empire was collapsing and the Huns invading. The Baltic island of Oland was never under Roman rule.

The first dig lasted only three days, but after the discovery of the walls of houses the team quickly found human remains.

Ms Victor says the bodies in the houses raised alarm bells, as historically corpses were usually cremated - and certainly were not left in people's homes.

"You don't find people lying around in houses," Ms Victor told the BBC. "[People] don't do it today, and didn't do it then."

Examining some of the victims of the 5th-Century massacre

While villagers normally lived outside the walled fort, they would shelter there in times of danger.

Between 200 and 250 people are thought to have lived in the fort, and Ms Victor says it does not look as if they defended themselves.

"People seem to have been killed without defending themselves," said team leader Helena Victor. "It seems like treason."

She suggests someone may have left a door open and "let them in at night".

The team have also found opulent jewellery at the site, as well as Roman gold coins, hair ornaments and scraps from final meals.

The summary for the journal paper describes the find as "a unique snapshot of domestic life and abrupt death in the Scandinavian Migration Period."

A brooch found at the dig site

Oland island in the south-east of Sweden has been inhabited since about 6000 BC, according to archaeological records.

There are at least 15 ring-forts on the island, although this is the first that seems to have suffered such a gruesome fate.

Despite the huge amount found so far, there is still a great deal to examine.

Only three of more than 50 houses have so far been excavated, with the team looking for further funds to carry on the dig.

"There is huge interest in this", Ms Victor says. "It's just the beginning for us."

A Sra.

3

- United States: a museum of Palestinian art hopes to change mentalities.

United States: a museum of Palestinian art hopes to change mentalities.

The small town of Woodbridge, Connecticut, may be light years away from the Middle East. But it now hosts the first American museum dedicated to Palestinian art, hoping to shake up the misconceptions about the Palestinian people.

At 120 km from New York, Woodbridge, a well-off town close to Yale University, is far from the millions of visitors attracted to the museums of the American metropolis.

But its existence is already a performance in itself, fruit of the relentlessness of the Palestinian-American businessman Faisal Saleh, 66, settled in the United States since the early 1970s.

The close ties between Washington and Israel, whose 70th anniversary will be celebrated on May 14th, the announced relocation of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the headlines about attacks or knife attacks perpetrated by Palestinians tend to to dominate the perception many Americans have of the Palestinian people.

"The media and forces hostile to Palestine have portrayed the Palestinians in a very negative light, and somehow they have been dehumanized," Faisal Saleh said in an interview with AFP.
The businessman, who has worked in publishing and software, hopes that his museum will bring Americans of all stripes to see the Palestinians as "a people like the others"."We have our artists, as all countries have their artists, and we have a disproportionate number," he says. "Many of them work in very rudimentary conditions.""Creative rather than backward"Called "Palestine Museum US", this new venue, which houses more than 70 works of art, 100 photographs, embroidery and costumes, is due to open to the public this Sunday.Free, employing only volunteers, with a budget of just 500,000 dollars, the exhibition space of some 400m2 will open to begin on Sunday.Even if it is only works of art, and the museum offers no explanation on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, nostalgia for a territory, for peace and self-determination permeates many works exposed.Palestinians call the anniversary of the creation of Israel in 1948 the "Nakba" ("catastrophe" in Arabic), in memory of the exodus of the Palestinian Arab population during the Israeli-Arab war of that year."Art is always widening the horizon of our thoughts," says Samia Halaby, an 81-year-old Palestinian artist now in New York, whose three canvases are on display in the new museum."I hope they will learn about our existence as a people, and that they will see us as creative rather than backward, as the media often likes to introduce us," she says."That's what many museums in the world can do for many different cultures and ideas."The exhibition space, very bright, opens on old photographs of Jerusalem at the time of the British mandate, until the contemporary and abstract art."A big museum in a big city"Gathering all the pieces in a short time has been a real headache. Especially since, until Halaby validated the project, many Palestinian or Arab artists from Israel refused to join.Having finally managed to gather the work of some 29 artists, many of whom live in Israel, the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, Saleh thinks he has demonstrated that the concept deserves to be expanded.
"We hope very soon other Palestinian entrepreneurs will make a financial contribution to achieve our ultimate goal of creating a great museum in a big city like New York or Washington."The first reactions were positive."Our activity is very peaceful (...) We want to share our art with people, I do not see how it could embarrass someone," he says. After attending an inauguration ceremony last Sunday, Timothy Niedermann, an author who wrote a novel about Palestine, said the United States needed such a museum."The negative image that we have is probably justified by our experience of terrorism, but we do not know anything else. This museum will show that + Yes, there are many normal people living there +"."And it really needs to be said: normal people with whom we can have a normal conversation, maybe to arrive at normal solutions".
