French village demands New York Met Museum returns ancient relic. - Aldeia francesa exige New York Met Museum retorna relíquia antiga.

A small town in South-Western France is demanding the return of a precious gold and silver bust from the Metropolitan museum of New York, who claim to be the artefacts rightful owners.

The mayor of Saiut-Yrieix-La-Perche, a village home to 7000 inhabitants, ordered a letter to be sent to the New York museum on the 10th of January officially demanding that the relic be returned to its rightful home in the Haute-Vienne department.

The 13th century bust of Aredius, encrusted with precious stones is said to contain the skull of Saint Yrieix, also known as Saint Aredius.

Currently exposed in the Metropolitan Museum of New York and having been on exposition there for more than 100 years, the museum claims to be the undisputed owners of the bust.

But two local local French historians, Brousse and Grandcoing, have discovered that the artefact was purchased by the famous banker and art enthusiast, JP Morgan.

The act of purchase found in the JP Morgan collection states that the bust was sold in 1907 by an English antique dealer for 300, 000 gold francs, who himself acquired the bust from a French antique dealer.

It remains a mystery as to how the Frenchman seized the antique in the first place.

Having been described as a “national treasure” by Judith Kagen, the curator of the Office of the Preservation of the Movable and Instrumental Heritage, she claims that the bust of Aredius had been taken in an “illicit” way.

According to the expert, the legitimate owners of the artefact remain the commune of Saint-Yrieix.

The mayor of the town hopes to resolve the situation “amicably” with the New York museum, but warns that the village is within its right to take civil action if the bust is refused return to its rightful home.

Aldeia francesa exige New York Met Museum retorna relíquia antiga.

Stolen Altarpiece To Be Returned to Italy. - Retábulo roubado para ser devolvido à Itália.

Small museums don't often find themselves at the center of international investigations, but last year the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Ky., did, when agents from the Department of Homeland Security tracked an altarpiece stolen in Italy in 1971 to the Speed's store rooms. The piece, a triptych featuring a Madonna and child that may date from as long ago as the 14th century, was stolen from a villa in Goito, southwest of Verona; two years later, the museum bought it from Newhouse Galleries in New York for $38,000. Under a settlement negotiated by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and announced on Monday, the Speed will soon turn over the work to Homeland Security, which will transfer it to Italian cultural authorities. (The collector who had owned it in 1971 has since died, and the authorities will be responsible for determining who is now entitled to the work.)

Before that, however, the museum will show the painting, which it has not exhibited for at least a decade, from June 9 to July 3 as part of a small exhibit that will, according to the museum's director, Charles L. Venable, ''contextualize it in a larger world of provenance research and repatriation of works of art.'' In addition to the unsolved mystery of how the altarpiece got from Italy to the gallery in New York, there are other questions, including who painted it and whether it is actually a 14th-century work, as some scholars have argued, or a 19th-century painting in the style of a 14th-century one, as others have suggested. In part because of the uncertainties of attribution and dating, Mr. Venable said that the museum valued the painting today at $38,000 - the same price it paid in 1973.

Drawings and watercolors by the Austrian artist Maria Lassnig exhibited in Lisbon.

An exhibition of about 50 drawings and watercolors by the Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919-2014), who explored the concept of "body consciousness", will be inaugurated on Friday at the Vieira da Silva Museum in Lisbon.

According to the Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Foundation, the exhibition, to be inaugurated at 6:30 p.m., is presented in collaboration with the Maria Lassnig Foundation, Vienna, Austria, and will be open until April 21.

"Maria Lassnig - View is not as important as feeling" is the title of this exhibition curated by Antonia Hoerschelmann (The Albertina Museum, Vienna), Anita Haldemann (Basel Kunstmuseum, Basel Museum of Art) and Johanna Ortner (Maria Lassnig Foundation), and intends to shed a renewed light on the work of the Austrian artist, according to the Vieira da Silva Foundation.

The selection of pieces to be shown in Lisbon was based on an exhibition organized by The Albertina Museum, Vienna, in collaboration with the Kunstmuseum Basel, Basel.

Maria Lassnig exhibition at MoMA

Maria Lassnig created images based on her own perception, deep feelings and physical sensations, having created throughout her career a substantial work in the fields of painting and graphic arts, in parallel with incursions in animation cinema and sculpture.

It is fundamental in Maria Lassnig's work that the concept of "body consciousness" arises from the introspective discovery of physical sensations expressed through artistic means, namely self-portraits, a genre with a tradition in the History of Art in which it introduced new dimensions .

Lassnig is considered one of the founders of the Informal Art in Austria, and a pioneer of feminine emancipation in the artistic world, deciding to make her body the focus of her art, and her work was also marked by Expressionism and Surrealism.

In the late 1960s, Lassnig moved to New York, where her work was influenced by the city's artistic milieu and feminist attitudes, which encouraged her to explore new areas such as animated film.

She was the first woman to receive the Grand Prix of the Austrian State for Fine Arts in 1988, and in 2013 she was awarded the Golden Lion of Career at the Venice Biennale.

The theater was inaugurated in September 2009 and is operated by a partnership between the Zaffari Company and Opus Promotions, sponsored by Bradesco.

On September 28, 2014, Folha de S.Paulo published the result of the evaluation made by the newspaper's team when visiting the sixty largest theaters in the city of São Paulo.

The venue was awarded three stars, a "regular" rating, with the consensus: "The size of the audience impresses: there are almost 1,500 seats divided into four levels.

Downstairs, the view is great. Already in the stateroom, in the noble balcony and in the friezes, the higher, the worse the view of the stage - and there are also places with blind spots. An alert on the site warns you about bad seats, but even so, the theater has lost points for that.

In the hall, there are sofas and chairs, and the bathrooms are neat: some are divided into individual booths with sink and mirror (was chosen the best in the evaluation)

No térreo, a visão é excelente.
