Dolce & Gabbana reinvents the runway at Milan Fashion Week show.

As the Met Gala holds a prestige in the fashion industry, it has continuously played an active role in current trends and patterns. In 2016, “fashions biggest night out” revealed it’s theme to be “Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology”. Then since, it feels as though an endless stream of mechanized designs and futuristic collections have been pouring from the seams of fashions top names. We are obsessing over the many ways fashion and technology beautifully overlap and intertwine.

The crossover continued this past week at Milan Fashion Week when Dolce & Gabbana opened their Fall|Winter 2018 show with drones, not models. The suspense built as the audience was asked to turn off all Wi-Fi and personal hotspots. This proved to be more challenging than expected, as the room was filled with millennials and influencers; who were inevitably called out over the loud speaker when they did not power down. Despite the show starting 45 minutes late, it turned heads as several drones “strutted” down the runway sporting D&Gs latest collection of leather, quilted handbags, named Devotion.

The dangling bags, featuring a heart-shaped closure, were accompanied by two support staff on either side of the runway draped in lab coats, to ensure that the drones stayed on track. The fashion power house demonstrated risk, but succeed, not only in the presentation, proving models are going out of style, but in their upcoming collection, which is undeniably exquisite.

Dolce&Gabbana

Young talent has been tasked with bringing oomph and impetus to some of the biggest brands in Paris, Milan and New York, on occasion turning them on their heads (as with Helmut Lang, where Hood By Air’s Shayne Oliver has been enlisted to reboot), or at least injecting them with a healthy dose of fresh creative energy. Luke and Lucie Meier, a married couple whose previous experience ranges from Dior to Supreme, have been signed up to recharge Jil Sander. And delivered. Same goes for Carven, whose new creative director Serge Ruffieux has shown a flair for beautifully made contemporary womenswear. Here, though, is our pick of the most notable new arrivals in A-list ateliers.

imege 1

Natacha Ramsay-Levi
Chloé

Ramsay-Levi had been on Parisians’ radar long before January 2017’s announcement that she would be taking Clare Waight Keller’s place at Chloé. A decade ago Ramsay-Levi was something of an it-girl and party-page fixture. She wanted to be a historian until she saw Nicolas Ghesquière’s work for Balenciaga, joined the company as his intern and graduated to a designer role. When Ghesquière moved to Louis Vuitton in November 2013, she followed him as creative director of women’s ready-to-wear, earning a reputation for translating his direction into saleable looks. He remains one of her most vocal supporters. ‘I have watched her grow into the determined and talented woman she is today,’ he said recently. ‘It is going to be very exciting to see her rise and create her signature.’

Ramsay-Levi’s insider experience and her product savvy attitude made her the ideal candidate for Chloé at a crucial time for the house, which recently revealed ambitious expansion plans, including an array of new stores and a greater product range. The first Frenchwoman to lead the brand in more than 25 years, Ramsay-Levi says of her take on the Parisian maison: ‘Chloé girls have a suave mix of sophistication and humility; they are timeless but never conventional. I want to continue to shape their course, staying true to the independent and intellectual spirit of Gaby Aghion [Chloé’s founder], and to those who perpetuated this democratic style, so resolutely feminine, so joyful.’

Ramsay-Levi’s first collection, presented last September, drew rave reviews for its sense of ease and affirmed femininity. Graphic flower-printed dresses mixed with dressage-inspired silhouettes, camel tailoring, 1970s-infused slouchy trousers and woven leather boots. Her debut collection is available to purchase at a Selfridges pop-up in London, until 18 March. ‘I want to give women the opportunity to show their inner strength, not their power. That’s the personality of the woman I am drawn to.’

Claire Waight Keller
Givenchy

During her six-year tenure as creative director of Chloé, Clare Waight Keller redefined the bohemian, feminine aesthetics of the French maison with flair and considerable commercial success. So much so that, prior to her first Givenchy show last October, some even wondered whether she could adapt to the darker, sleeker look that was trademark of Hubert de Givenchy and, of course, her predecessor Riccardo Tisci. those who doubted her had clearly forgotten her past stints at Calvin Klein, Gucci, Pringle of Scotland and Ralph Lauren, where she designed menswear. a task she has taken on at Givenchy as well.

The brand’s Spring/Summer 2018 show included male models in skinny ensembles – a lot more glam, and a lot less streetwear-inspired, than Tisci’s. The silhouette was wide at the shoulders and tiny at the waist for both men and women. Functional bomber jackets, leather jeans and miniskirts were the key pieces for womenswear, with some concessions to fantasy made in eveningwear (the designer’s chiffon and lace dresses were the most critically acclaimed). Synergy between men’s and women’s collections is central to Waight Keller’s approach in her new position. as she tells us, ‘I really believe that there’s an importance to that dialogue. The idea of the couple is strongly rooted in the house. That’s something I want to carry forward. Today, if you think of the people who are the most influential in the world, they’re often power couples.’

Paul Surridge
Roberto Cavalli

Of all the Italian houses known for their glamazonian legacies, few are as bold as Roberto Cavalli. Which is why the choice of Englishman Paul Surridge as the new creative director came as such a surprise. Surridge is a Central Saint Martins graduate with an extensive CV, including stints at the menswear divisions of Calvin Klein (when the founder was still at the helm), Burberry, Jil Sander and Z Zegna. The Cavalli gig is his first move into womenswear. ‘Menswear is more in the smaller details and the function, whereas womenswear is in the occasion and more of an emotional approach,’ he says. ‘I like to think that my men’s background has enabled me to work deeper in the cut, finish and construction.’

Surridge’s Cavalli borrows menswear’s mathematical precision and obsession with details, without forgetting the sexiness that defined the Florentine brand in the first place. Surridge walks a thin line between heritage and renewal, but then again, he is a man who enjoys a challenge, ‘and ultimately, it’s Roberto Cavalli’s core values of beauty and quality that inspired me’.

His first collection still boasts the Cavalli essentials – zebra prints, fur, and revealing cut-outs – but these are combined with laser-sharp tailoring and a touch of androgyny, making them more accessible and current. ‘I’m dedicated to continuing to evolve a modern approach to sensuality while revisiting some of the central icons of the maison,’ explains Surridge.

This Roman ‘gate to hell’ killed its victims with a cloud of deadly carbon dioxide.

Is it possible to walk through the gates of hell and live? The Romans thought so, and they staged elaborate sacrifices at what they believed were entrances to the underworld scattered across the ancient Mediterranean. The sacrifices—healthy bulls led down to the gates of hell—died quickly without human intervention, but the castrated priests who accompanied them returned unharmed. Now, a new study of one ancient site suggests that these “miracles” may have a simple geological explanation.

The ancient city of Hierapolis, located in modern-day Turkey
 CAOWEI/GETTY IMAGES

Rediscovered just 7 years ago, the gate to hell at the ancient city of Hierapolis, in modern-day Turkey, is a stone doorway leading to a small cavelike grotto. The gate was built into one wall of a rectangular, open-aired arena, topped by a temple and surrounded by raised stone seating for visitors. The city itself sits in one of the region’s most geologically active areas; 2200 years ago, its thermal springs were believed to have great healing powers. But a deep fissure running beneath Hierapolis constantly emits volcanic carbon dioxide (CO2), which pours forth as a visible mist. The gate—also known as the Plutonium, for Pluto, the god of the underworld—is built directly above it. In 2011, archaeologists showed that the gate is still deadly: Birds that fly too close suffocate and die.

Now, a research team led by volcano biologist Hardy Pfanz at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany has studied the shrine’s killing potential in greater detail. Pfanz and his colleagues measured the CO2 concentration in the arena over time. During the day, the sun’s warmth dissipates the gas. But at night the gas—slightly heavier than air—billows out and forms a CO2 “lake” on the sheltered arena floor. It is particularly deadly at dawn, when the CO2 concentration 40 centimeters above the arena floor reaches 35%, enough to asphyxiate and kill animals or even people within a few minutes, Pfanz says. But concentrations fall rapidly with height.

The eunuch priests likely made their sacrifices in only the morning or evening hours, when the concentration of the gas was highest, Pfanz says. Sacrificial animals were not tall enough to keep their heads fully clear of the CO2 lake, and as they became dizzy, their heads would have dropped even lower, exposing them to higher CO2 concentrations and leading to death by asphyxiation. The priests, however, were tall enough to keep their heads above the dangerous gasses, and may have even stood on stones to add to their height. “They … knew that the deadly breath of [the mythical hellhound] Kerberos only reached a certain maximum height,” Pfanz says.

A 3D reconstruction of the Plutonium at Hierapolis. The Gate to Hell is located in the wall below the stone seating. MASSIMO LIMONCELLI

Strabo, an ancient Greek historian who visited the Plutonium at Hierapolis about 2000 years ago, recorded that the priests could even place their heads within the gate to hell and suffer no ill effects. Strabo thought this immunity may have been due to their castration. Pfanz believes they were aware of the local chemical environment. For instance, he thinks the priests would have been careful to avoid getting too close to the gate other than at noon, when the shrine was relatively safe. Archaeologist Francesco D’Andria of the University of Salento in Lecce, Italy, who led the team that discovered the Plutonium at Hierapolis in 2011, isn’t so sure. His team has found many ancient oil lamps immediately around the gate to hell, suggesting priests may have ventured near it at night despite the dangerous CO2 levels.

The new findings are “tremendously exciting,” says Gil Renberg, a classicist who researches Greek and Roman religious beliefs at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. “This scientific information proves the veracity of ancient sources and helps explain not only why people could enter, but also why animals would die.”

It’s likely that at least some of the other Plutoniums worked in the same way. Renberg thinks the chemical survey methods used by Pfanz and his team could help provide a firmer idea of the exact location of the gate to hell at a site called Akaraka, also in modern-day Turkey.

A cultura e o amor devem estar juntos.
Vamos compartilhar.

Culture is not what enters the eyes and ears,
but what modifies the way of looking and hearing
