The exhibition became possible after Syrian government forces regained control of the eastern Ghouta enclave, which halted the attacks on Damascus, Mohammad said.

"If you turn on the TV, all you hear about Syria is war, war, war. The purpose of our exposition is to let people know that there is love here, there is humanity here," Badi Jakhja, one of the painters whose works are exposed at the event, he said.

The National Museum of Damascus is located in the western part of the Syrian capital, between the University of Damascus and the Tekkiye Mosque.

200 years of the National Museum. The oldest scientific institution in Brazil. - 200 anos do Museu Nacional. A mais antiga instituição científica do Brasil.

The National Museum is preparing to celebrate its bicentennial. Founded on June 6, 1818 as the Royal Museum, in Campo de Santana, in the Center, its headquarters was transferred in 1892 to the Imperial Palace Quinta da Boavista, in São Cristóvão, in the North Zone, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first step is a gift to visitors: entrance will be free for the second Sunday of the month, which will allow moms to celebrate their date by taking the family to know the former residence of the Brazilian imperial family and its collection of more than 20 million items.

Those who see the palace outside, with a total area of 13,920 m² (equivalent to two official soccer fields) and three floors, find a renewed appearance by the recent renovation that rescued the yellowish beige original to the imposing façade. On the inside, however, there is a lack of resources that contribute to the permanence of gutters, peeling walls, plastering under the risk of falling, and termite invasions. Despite the richness of the collection, the exhibitions remain worthy of past centuries. There is no interactivity between the pieces and the visitors, as it happens in any contemporary museum. Foreigners do not have bilingual explanatory texts. And if someone with a locomotion problem arrives, they will have to wait until the municipal guard shows up in their electric cart to open the lock of the gates.

Most of these problems may be in the offing, depending on the results of the projects planned by the new director of the National Museum, the carioca paleontologist Alexander Kellner, 55 years old, who reached the maximum position of the institution where he worked for 30 years with the goal of "change". For him, rescuing the importance of the museum is a greater challenge than the research he has been developing since 2004 in China on winged reptiles of the Mesozoic period (between 251 million and 66.5 million years), the pteurosauros, in the best Indian style Jones. "This work, only on vacation," he warns. "My dedication to the museum will be integral. Why do Brazilians have to travel abroad to get to know a quality natural history museum? "He asks, who intends to respond positively to this challenge in the next four years of his administration.

Just follow the visitation rates to see that there is something wrong with the institution. In 2017, there were 210 thousand visitors, while reports from 60 years ago account for the presence of up to 350 thousand payers. "Until the end of my term, it will be a million," Kellner says, without false modesty, because he believes in the real possibilities of this leap in quality. He himself was instrumental in the experience that changed the history of the National Museum, the exhibition "In the time of the dinosaurs", 1997. "We won more visitors, more respect, more resources and better covenants. Everything changed, "he sums up.

Now the process just crawls. Today, the museum houses 225 staff, 90 professors and more than 500 graduate students. The incorporation to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1946 should yield to the institution an annual budget of R $ 515,000 in three installments. However, the amount that arrives does not exceed R $ 300 thousand. Kellner also announces for this month of May, still without a definite day, an exhibition with the magnificent costumes that Imperatriz Leopoldinense took to the Marquis of Sapucaí in his parade, "A real night in the National Museum", eighth place in the ranking of the School parade of Samba of 2018. It is the type of the very low cost initiative that he bets on, with the potential to attract crowds.

The inspiration in Leopoldina could not be more pertinent. As D. João VI did anything to please his daughter-in-law, he signed the decree creating the Royal Museum in 1818. A student of natural sciences, D. Pedro I's wife, she knew the importance science could play in the development of the capital beyond the sea of the Portuguese empire. Leopoldina was also interested in botany and mineralogy, and the museum that was born resorted to existing collections, such as the House of the Birds, warehouse of the colony where the taxidermists of the time deposited their pieces.

1

Alexander Kellner placed his table under the most damaged wall of the royal apartments, between two magnificent stained-glass windows, to draw attention to the urgency of restoring space.
RevitalizationThe revitalization of the National Museum is based on a proposal with 11 items from the Association of Friends of the Museum, the directorate, and the technical-scientific and administrative directories. One is to start a crowdfunding campaign to get the Dinoprata standing. With this, the Dinosaurs Room, on the second floor of the museum, can be reopened. The opening must occur before the bicentennial, on June 6. Kellner's choice to occupy the 15-year-old Emperor's quarters has a rationale: to draw attention to the degradation of space, with peeling walls, like the one he chose to position his table, between two pairs of Italian stained glass (Tasso and Eleonora and Dante and Beatriz), also in need of restoration.

After recovering the Imperial rooms and other historical rooms still closed, his dream is to create the Circuit of the Historical Rooms of the Paço and offer slippers in the guided tours, as it happens with the Imperial Museum of Petrópolis. Already there are promised funds and covenants, however, as nothing has been signed yet, he prefers to preserve the names of potential stakeholders. It is worth remembering that any initiative will have to be accompanied by the National Institute of National Historical Heritage (Iphan), which overturned the property in 1938.

For any project, such as expanding the current 3,000m² of exhibition area to 10,000m² - which will not be difficult with the incorporation of the third floor - the next step is to get the donation by the federal government of a land of 40,000m², used as parking lot during the Olympics, adjoining the outer area of the museum, to house the administration and part of the collection. "Without that, we can not do much, because it is impossible to reform or restore, without removing the personnel and part of the collection," he says. The new buildings would house the departments of Entomology and Invertebrates, among others, besides the laboratories and technical reserve of the collections. To discuss this and other proposals, federal deputy Celso Pansera (PT-RJ) requested a public hearing to the Education Committee of the National Congress, still unanswered. The monumental room where the 13-year-old humpback whale is hiding 20 years ago will win a suspended facility, surrounded by mezzanines that allow the public to interact with the skeleton of the marine mammal. "I plan to promote a charitable dinner with potential donors in this room to get this project forward," says Kellner. He wants to attract the attention of the private sector to the real estate and parts disruption, because the existing contract has expired. "We could sensitize a pool of companies to take on this task, without burden to the museum," he speculates. Sectors of the building itself would be boosted by small initiatives, such as the covering of the monumental staircase and the reopening of the Jardim das Princesas.

2

The skeleton of the 13m humpback whale, 20 years ago closed in a room outside the visitation circuit.
Pearls of the collectionWhen he decided to create the National Museum, D. João VI also managed to acquire a classification base of minerals from different European regions, coveted by Napoleon Bonaparte, currently on display. The monarch donated to the museum treasures of his own family, such as the golden vault, "Battle of Constantine", topped by a coral sculpture, kept in the vault. From then on, it was 200 years to accumulate a fabulous collection, which includes the first large dinosaur to be found in Brazil in 2006, the Dinoprata, a Maxakalisaurus Topai with 13.5m in length, a herbivore from the Cretaceous period (there are 80 millions of years), coming from the city of Prata, in Minas Gerais. It is dismantled because of the termites that have eroded its base.

Another cause of great curiosity is the oldest human fossil ever found in the country in the early 1970s, in the Lapa Vermelha region of Minas Gerais, named "Luzia" by the philologist Walter Neves. It is a woman whose reconstruction in 3D revealed a black face, with about 12,500 to 13,000 years of existence. The pieces of the skull and jaw found in the excavations are also stored in a safe. The visitor sees the reconstitution of the face in three dimensions. Luzia disputed with the mummies the interest of the public, especially that of Kherina. In addition to having breasts, hip and belly modeled by fillers, it keeps the bandaged limbs separately, which allows the impressive view of the skeleton of your feet. There are reports of visitors hypnotized by Kherina, auctioned by D.Pedro I in 1827, with the mummies Hori and Harsiese. The story goes that the mummies and some 700 pieces of Ancient Egypt from the collection were destined for Argentina, but as there was a war in the region, they ended up being diverted to Rio de Janeiro. It was José Bonifácio de Andrade e Silva who warned the emperor about the auction. In turn, when Peter II traveled through Egypt, between 1876 and 1877, he was presented with a sarcophagus where rests the priestessess Sha-amun-in-su, who lived in 2,800 BC. It is the only one in the world to this day ever open.

The bust of D. Pedro I (left) and a painting by his favorite lover, Domitila de Canto e Melo from São Paulo, better known as Marquesa de Santos (right)

Palace of sad memoriesNow that the new director has moved into the royal family quarters, curiosities pinched by historians have surfaced. Beginning with the donation of the property to Dom Joao VI by the slave trader Elias Antonio Lopes, as recorded by Laurentino Gomes in his "1808". What royal favors would have been granted to reward such kindness? We will never know. The addition of pepper grows in the management of D. Pedro I. The life of the monarch changed with the arrival to the River of Domitila de Castro Canto and Melo, in 1822. The fierce brown-haired paulista soon became the favorite of the collection of lovers of the emperor, to the point that he transferred it to a luxurious palace leaning against the wall of the Palace of Quinta da Boa Vista, now home to the First Reign Museum. The account is in "1822" by Laurentino Gomes, reproduced by the historian Alberto Rangel: "In the emperor's quarters there would be a secret exit by which he escaped at night to find himself with his mistress." Kellner dismisses the hypothesis, "at most there was a stable so he could go to meet his beloved on horseback," he speculates.

Already Mary del Priori gives grounds to the passion of Dom Pedro I for Domitilla in "The flesh and the blood": "I can not for the true and sincere love that I have to stop looking for every opportunity to see you." She watched her lover through binoculars. They were digging into jealousy: "I no longer date anyone after I have given you my word of honor..." In October, the emperor signed the title that was already viscountess of Santos the marquise, "for own merit." For Leopoldina it was enough. On the 23rd of the same month, she asked to be informed of her father: she was extremely unhappy. As Gomes reproduces in 1808, the French chronicler Étienne Victor Arago, who was in Rio between 1817 and 1820 aboard the Uranie corvette, reported his impression of Queen Carlota Joaquina, D.'s wife.

João VI, in reception at Paço São Cristóvão: "She dressed like a gypsy, in a kind of sweater all nailed with pins. His unkempt hair, in fury, comb widowers, attested to the absence of a hairdresser in the palace or a zealous chamberlain. " Still according to "1808", the historian Tobias Monteiro brings a picturesque information about the intimacy of the king (D. João VI). "The rooms at Paço de São Cristóvão opened onto a balcony. In an adjoining room, he received visits and dispatched with ministers and officers. As the room was the only access to the royal room, the servants had to pass through it when they emptied the pots used by King John VI. (...) To avoid embarrassment, the vases were covered by a wooden lid, framed by a curtain of red velvet. "

Going back to Gomes's "1822", in another episode that occurred before the previous scene, it was from the Palace of Quinta da Boa Vista that D. Pedro left at 10 o'clock on October 12, 1822, accompanied by D. Leopoldina and his eldest daughter of the couple, the princess Maria da Glória, towards the Field of Santana. There, he was acclaimed emperor on a rainy morning, the 24 years completed that day, 15 of which passed in Brazil: "It was a popular consecration like never seen in Brazil. Many people hugged and wept (...) the emperor himself also wept. " Another highlight was the birth of D. Pedro II on December 2, 1825.

Mary del Priore reveals other details about the palace. "When the young husbands arrived at St. Christopher's Palace, the king said to Leopoldine:" I hope this room, though furnished simply, is pleasing to you. " The no-luxury facilities had recently been remodeled. And the explanation served to clarify the delay of the coming of the admirable furniture commissioned in Paris.

200 anos do Museu Nacional.

Mudou tudo”, sintetiza.

Agora, o processo apenas engatinha.

Pérolas do acervo
