Tradition doceira de Pelotas is declared intangible heritage of Brazil.

Decision was announced this afternoon (15), in Brasilia. Conjunto Pelotas was also dropped.

Fenadoce receives thousands of visitors annually

The sweet tradition of Pelotas was declared Brazilian Intangible Cultural Heritage. The decision was announced on Tuesday afternoon (15), during a vote of the Advisory Board of the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), in Brasília.

It is the first time, in Iphan's history, that certification is given to the same city, in both categories at once - material and immaterial. The project was approved unanimously.

Delicacies such as quindim, well married, cameo, fig in syrup, buttery, stuffed plum, crystallized pumpkin, among others, made the region known as the "sweet land."

In addition to Pelotas, the municipalities of Arroio do Padre, Capão do Leão, Morro Redondo and Turuçu - called "Pelotas" - are included in the project.

Pelotas sweets made the region known as the 'sweet land.

The request came from the Pelotas Shopkeepers' Chamber (CDL) and the Pelotas Culture Secretariat. The idea was to promote and value the production of sweets as a cultural reference of the region.

The main thesis is that the production of charque, Pelotas' main economic activity in the late 18th century, directly influenced the development of sweet recipes.

The sale of meat to the northeast of the country allowed access to the sugar that was produced in that region, since the transport was carried out by the same ships.

The sweet currency went to the kitchens of Pelotas farms.

The first recipes were made by Portuguese and Africans and then the way of doing German and French immigrants.

The request for recognition includes a plan to preserve the candy production in the region, with actions to maintain and transmit knowledge to the next generations.

The recognition values the way fine and colonial sweets are made over the years, with little change in recipes and how to make them.
