Nadine Labaki ‘s Movie “Capharnaüm (Capernaum)” is Competing for the Palme D’or This Year!.

The official selection for the 71st Cannes Film Festival was just announced and Nadine Labaki’s movie “Capharnaüm (Capernaum)” is officially competing for the Palme D’or! The movie was directed Nadine Labaki and co-written by Michelle Keserwany. I couldn’t find a trailer or even a synopsis about the movie except this one in French by L’Orient Le Jour.

Nadine Labaki spent the first seventeen years of her life, living in a war torn environment, by 1991 the civil war in Lebanon had ended.

She began her career with Studio El Fan, a Lebanese talent show, in 1990. The show aired during the 1970s, which continued through to the early 2000s. At the talent show, Labaki won a prize for directing various music video productions.

Labaki obtained a degree in audiovisual studies at Saint Joseph University in Beirut. In 1997, she directed her graduation film, 11 Rue Pasteur, which won the Best Short Film Award at the Biennale of Arab Cinema at the Arab World Institute in Paris. Labaki is unique among her fellow Lebanese and Arab Film Makers in that she was not educated or trained abroad.

In 1998, she attended a workshop in acting at the Cours Florent in Paris. She went on to direct advertisements and music videos for renowned Middle Eastern singers, for which she won several awards.

As a director

Labaki in 2007

In 2003, Labaki's name began to become more popular within the Arab media. 2003 was also the year when she began directing music videos for singer Nancy Ajram. The song, "Akhasmak ah" (I'll taunt you), sparked controversy due to the nudity presented and its sexually explicit dancing.

In 2005, Labaki took part in the Cannes Film Festival Residence for six months, during that time, she wrote Caramel, her first feature film. In 2006, she directed and played one of the leading roles in Caramel, which showcases a Beirut that most people are not familiar with. Rather than tackle political issues that have plagued Lebanon, she presents a comedy that deals with five Lebanese women in Beirut who gather at a beauty salon and deal with issues related to love, sexuality, tradition, disappointment, and everyday ups and downs.

The film premiered at the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, which was a commercial success in the summer of that same year. It sold worldwide and collected important prizes at many festivals around the world, garnering Labaki much acclaim both as a director and actress. It also put her on Variety's 10 Directors to Watch list at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2008 the French Ministry of Culture and Communication gave her the Insignia of Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters.

In 2010, Labaki directed and starred in her second feature film, Where Do We Go Now? The film humorously tackles a delicate subject about a village in which church and mosque stand side by side as women try to keep their blowhard men from starting a religious war.

The film also premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the "Un Certain Regard" category in 2011. The film won the Cadillac people’s choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It also collected many other awards in festivals around the world, like Cannes Film Festival, San Sebastián International Film Festival, Stockholm Film Festival. The film was also nominated for best foreign film at the Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

In 2016, Nadine Labaki started work on her third feature film called “Cafarnaúm” (Capernaum) which was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at 2018 Cannes Film Festival .[6] She intends to use mostly non-professional actors for this film, similar to her past works.

Labaki's style of cinematography uses cinematic conventions, such as illuminations, atmosphere lighting, and silence to help convey the meaning in her films. Despite the often dangerous political situations Labaki continues to write and direct films that do not focus on conflict.

She was selected to be on the jury for the Un Certain Regard section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

As an actress

Nadine Labaki started acting in short films during the early 2000s.

As an actor, Labaki starred in Stray Bullet, directed by Georges Hachem in 2010. She appears in the Moroccan production Rock The Casbah, directed by Laila Marrakchi, alongside actors Hiam Abbas and Lubna Azabal.[citation needed]

Politics

Through her films, Nadine Labaki connects themes from the Arab world and the Western world. Her transnational feminism highlights ordinary women affected by complex realities deeply rooted in decades of political turmoil. Nadine Labaki was a candidate on the list of the new political movement Beirut Madinati for the capital’s May 2016 local election.[9] Beirut Madinati focuses on social justice and the good of the public utilizing a diverse group of citizens as representatives.

Despite achieving about 40% of the popular vote, the movement lost against its opponent, the 'Beirutis' list' supported by Saad Hariri, in all 6 out of 12 wards, but did not gain a single seat under the election’s one-district First-past-the-post system.

Personal life

Labaki is multilingual, fluent in Arabic, French, English and Italian. In 2007, she married musician and composer Khaled Mouzanar. In 2009, Nadine Labaki gave birth to her first boy, Walid. In 2016 Nadine gave birth to a daughter.

In 2016, Labaki received an honorary degree from the American University of Beirut and was the speaker at the 150th Commencement Ceremony.

Archaeologists from five countries are researching an 11,000-year-old relic of ancestral populations inhabiting lands near the banks of the Uruguay River on the border between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Researchers from five countries - France, Russia, Italy, Canada and Brazil - try to unravel the prehistory in Santa Catarina in excavations on the banks of the Uruguay River, near the dam of the Foz do Chapecó hydroelectric plant, between Águas de Chapecó and Alpestre (RS) . They are digging on both sides of the bank, but on the Santa Catarina side is the state's oldest site, at 11,700 years.

1
Excavation is thorough so as not to damage objects found
on the ground, such as knives, arrowheads and bones.

"These are very important sites because we have basically the whole sequence of regional prehistory, ranging from the most recent groups that lived 500 years ago to the groups that lived here around 11,000, 10,000 years ago," says Mirian Carbonera, PhD in Archeology and coordinator of the Center of Memory of the West of Santa Catarina (Ceom), linked to Unochapecó.

The excavation is part of the project Prehistoric Settlements of the Upper Uruguay River, started in 2013 with funds from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As of 2014, international expeditions began. For a month, archaeologists are stationed at a fish farm at the Instituto Goio-Ên, also linked to Unochapecó, which is next to the dam, in Aguas de Chapecó.

This year, work began on the 30th and runs until May 25th. The excavation is very careful not to damage materials such as bones, coal, ceramics and arrowheads, among others. In addition, before the piece is removed, the layout of the items is mapped, with the placement of colored pins for later annotation on paper.

According to the professor of the Museum of Natural History of Paris, Antoine Lourdeau, it is important to note the arrangement of the objects to understand the organization and the context of the population that passed through the place.

- Here we are digging stone tools, which were the purpose of production, and also the chips that correspond to the residue of production. Each of these categories of objects gives an information. In addition, this 10,000-year site has a technology different from that used at older levels. With 11,700 years, we already knew that there were people here. But we can have older sites, "he says. Unprecedented features for the southern region of Brazil.

According to researcher Marcos César Pereira dos Santos, who completed a doctorate in archeology at the University of Ferrara, Italy, with a thesis on archeology in the Upper Uruguay River, the long stone chips used by the people who inhabited the region are noteworthy:

"It's a very specific technology, made of elongated stones, like knives, that have been retouched to be used as different instruments, whether for cutting, for drilling and for scraping. This is an unprecedented feature for southern Brazil - Santos points out.

Besides these splinters, the present excavation also found other types of stone that were used as a hammer, to remove these splinters.

Inheritance of different times in the same place.

Another aspect highlighted by Marcos dos Santos is that on the banks of the Uruguay River, on the Rio Grande side, six levels of occupation were found in a single archaeological site.

- For the first time, we have overlapping archaeological levels with an older one, between 10.5 thousand and 9.5 thousand years, then an occupation 8.5 thousand years ago, then a lapse and a reoccupation with 5.5 a thousand years, then one with 4,5 thousand, one with 3 thousand and the arrival of the potters 500 years before the present - emphasizes.

People were attracted by the

The Uruguay River functioned as a water catcher and also of human cams. The presence of distinct stands is observed in different layers of land. Dr. Mirian Carbonera explains that the darker spots are indicative of an occupation, in which there are remains of fires and organic material that has been deposited.

The researchers also found pieces of Guarani pottery, arrowheads, charcoal and even bones. All the material goes through cleaning and is taken to the Ceom collection, where it is cataloged and will be available for research.

- We have a general idea of what the groups were and the period in which they lived. Now the purpose of the excavations is to be able to detail each of these sequences. In that period of 12,000 years to 8,000 years, they were not a homogeneous group that kept doing the same things. The goal is to perceive cultural changes. We also have a time span of 6,000 years to 3,000 years and we want to better understand this range and, finally, understand the Guarani occupations - explains Carbonera.

The survey began for another reason: initially the on-site survey gathered information for the installation of the hydroelectric plant, which started the construction site in 2006 and began operating in 2010, bringing great impact to the region. Today, side by side, coexist tons of concrete from the hydroelectric dam with the millennial technology of chipped stone.

O objetivo é perceber as mudanças culturais.
