The Museum of Slovak National Councils at Myjava is a specialised organizational unit of the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava. Its focus is to document the history of the Slovak National Council as the supreme representative of the legislative and constitutional body.
The introductory part of the exhibition presents the revolutionary 1848-49 period, showcasing a large-scale period map of a part of Europe including Slovakia entering the European history.
Passing along guarding cabins with legionaries we reach a map of a nascent, different Europe and the newly-established country Czecho-Slovakia. These are the years of WWI with the Cleveland Declaration, the Pittsburgh Agreement, the Manifesto of the Czechoslovak National Council, Czechoslovak legions and the Martin Declaration.
The first floor of the exhibition features a symbolic brick construction in an arch-like shape to express the growth and maturing of the Slovak nation towards its own state. This is followed by the establishment and the fate of the Second Slovak National Council (SNR) both as a whole and with respect to its main personalities.
The hard times of WWII, the Slovak nation grew mature and its Third Slovak National Council and the Slovak National Uprising proved to the world that Slovaks are a modern democratic nation.
The brick construction hasn't reached its end yet, and neither has the history of the Slovak National Councils, more precisely the years 1944-1948, 1948-1965, the revival year of 1968, the Act on the Czechoslovak Federation, the process of normalization, and eventually the ringing of 1989 brought forward the need for a solution to the issue of the organization of the state.
The exhibition also features the years 1990-1991, the year of 1992 when the SNC Declaration on the Independence of the Slovak Republic was issued, the Constitution of the Slovak Republic adopted on September 1, 1992, and the new country appeared on the map of Europe - the Slovak Republic.
This all is complemented by audiovisual and multimedia devices, which, with documents from a range of 150 years, enable you to extend your knowledge of this topic. In this respect, the SNC Museum meets the demands of visitors living in the third millenium.
SNM - Museum of Slovak National Councils opened a new exposition prepared in 2008, the year of anniversary. The exposition enhances the original exposition from 1998 with newer documents - especially material relics that are deposited in the collections of Slovak museums. The documentary value of the exposition with respect to its authenticity is quite high especially due to the location where the events of autumn of 1848 took place - the house of A. Koléniová. Visitors proceed through Europe and Hungary hit by revolutions to get right to the centre of events in the house of A. Koléniová.
