In this unusually large Tibetan gilded bronze sculpture, the Buddha is dressed in monastic clothing, which clings to his body. 

The hems of his garment consist of elegant lines of beading that enliven the simple forms of the sculpture. Serene and confident, he sits with his legs crossed in a stable position of meditation similar to that of the Gandharan Buddha of twelve hundred years earlier (see 2000.11). 

The hair is colored blue, arranged in tight snail shell curls, and topped by an ushnisha—a cranial knot—all characteristics dictated by religious texts and symbolizing supreme wisdom.Buddha displays the "earth touching gesture" or bhumisparsa mudra, which symbolizes his attainment of full enlightenment (nirvana). 

The story of the enlightenment of the historical Buddha-Siddhartha Gautama, or Shakyamuni-is one of the most popular and inspiring subjects of Buddhist art. After sitting in meditation under the sacred Bodhi tree , Prince Siddhartha was tempted by the demon king Mara. The Buddha-to-be resisted and touched his right hand to mother earth, calling her to witness his rebuff of the demon and asking for the strength to achieve enlightenment. 

She granted his wish by banishing Mara, thus allowing "Buddha" (meaning "Enlightened One") to enter his full manifestation.According to tradition, in the seventh century, the two Buddhist wives of the Tibetan king were the first to bring Buddhist images into Tibet. 

Once converted, the king sent for texts and artists from the Indian region of Nepal. Because the Nepalese craftsmen were fine metalsmiths, most Tibetan images are hand-finished cast bronze. The forms derive from Indian sculpture of the Pala Dynasty (about 750-1200). 

This dazzling, jewel-like bronze reveals the skill of Tibetan artists to maintain artistic inspiration while creating satisfying religious icons.
