The UNESCO Center for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, set up in Beja, starts operating on Wednesday to promote, study and disseminate traditional music, cante alentejano, literature and popular history.
According to the Câmara de Beja, the center is located in the emblematic building of Clube Bejense, an old space of conviviality and culture of the city, which the municipality rehabilitated to welcome the space and a "creative house", in an investment of 374 thousand euros.
The center will open on Wednesday with a program that integrates the children's workshop "Arts and Crafts d'Antigamente", starting at 09:00, and a ceremony, scheduled for 18:00.
The opening ceremony includes the presentation of the exhibition "Sing: Alma do Alentejo", with photographs by photojournalist Ana Baião, and a performance by the Bulgarian Voices Angelite band and the Coral Singers Group of Disquiet, which will perform on the same day Of the Republic, starting at 10:00 pm, at a concert included in the program of the Festival Beja na Rua and with the participation of the fado singer António Zambujo.
The creation of the center resulted from a protocol between the Câmara de Beja, the National Commission of UNESCO, the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo, the National Cultural Center, the AgaKhan Foundation, the Musicians and Performers and Audiovisual Trade Union, The MODA - Cante Alentejano Association and the Gastronomic Confraternity of Alentejo.

O Centro UNESCO para a Salvaguarda do Património Cultural Imaterial, criado em Beja, começa a funcionar na quarta-feira para promover, estudar e divulgar a música tradicional, o cante alentejano, a literatura e a história popular.
Segundo a Câmara de Beja, o centro está situado no emblemático edifício do Clube Bejense, um antigo espaço de convívio e cultura da cidade, que o município reabilitou para acolher o espaço e uma "casa criativa", num investimento de 374 mil euros.
O centro vai ser inaugurado na quarta-feira com um programa que integra o ateliê para crianças "Artes e Ofícios d'Antigamente", a partir das 09:00, e uma cerimónia, marcada para as 18:00.
A cerimónia de inauguração inclui a apresentação da exposição "Cante: Alma do Alentejo", com fotografias da fotojornalista Ana Baião, e uma atuação da banda Bulgarian Voices Angelite e do Grupo Coral Cantadores do Desassossego, que, no mesmo dia, irão atuar na Praça da República, a partir das 22:00, num concerto incluído no programa do Festival Beja na Rua e que conta com a participação do fadista António Zambujo.
A criação do centro resultou de um protocolo entre a Câmara de Beja, a Comissão Nacional da UNESCO, a Direção Regional de Cultura do Alentejo, o Centro Nacional de Cultura, a Fundação AgaKhan, o Sindicato dos Músicos e Profissionais do Espetáculo e do Audiovisual, a MODA - Associação do Cante Alentejano e a Confraria Gastronómica do Alentejo.
O centro pretende "assumir a missão de potenciar" o "reconhecimento cada vez mais amplo" que o património cultural imaterial está a ganhar na "consciência coletiva" devido às mais recentes inscrições portuguesas na Lista Representativa da UNESCO, como o cante alentejano, explica a Câmara de Beja, num comunicado enviado à agência Lusa.
Segundo o município, a inventariação de práticas e saberes populares, a promoção do cante alentejano e outras manifestações musicais tradicionais e a implementação do programa UNESCO "Tesouros Humanos Vivos", "valorizando os portadores de memória e sabedoria de inegável valor universal", são alguns dos objetivos do centro.
Por isso, frisa, a criação do centro "deve ser vista como uma reação à crescente debilidade demográfica do interior, em particular do Alentejo, que, partindo da valorização das suas gentes, pretende projetar uma sociedade para o futuro ancorada nas práticas e memórias que estes patrimónios imateriais evocam".
Segundo o protocolo, o centro estará organizado como uma rede de membros que colaboram entre si e com instituições e organismos de Beja e do Alentejo, que estejam "empenhados" na salvaguarda, na gestão, na valorização e na educação para o património imaterial, nomeadamente música tradicional, cante alentejano, literatura e histórias orais, e "na difusão e na promoção das boas práticas neste domínio".
O Centro UNESCO terá várias atribuições, como "contribuir para uma melhor compreensão do património imaterial" e promover, estudar e divulgar a música tradicional, nomeadamente o cante alentejano, a literatura e a história popular.
Colaborar com instituições locais, regionais, nacionais ou internacionais em ações ligadas com os objetivos da UNESCO e com a Direção-geral do Património Cultural na concretização do inventário do património imaterial são outras das atribuições.
