Restoration of the Basilica of the Nativity

The Brazilian government approved the donation of $ 245,510.00 for the restoration of the Basilica of the Nativity, in the city of Bethlehem (Palestine). Constructed from the fourth century, to mark the birthplace of Jesus, the basilica is visited by approximately 3 million pilgrims and tourists annually.

In 2008, the Palestinian government and the three Christian denominations present in the building - Greco-Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic - launched, in coordination and under the supervision of Unesco, initiative of restoration of the monument. The project has an independent international audit of Deloitte & Touche.

The Palestinian government and its international partners have already raised $ 10 million, about half of the resources needed to restore the building. The resources already have allowed the restoration of elements like the ceiling, the windows and diverse parts of the facades. The restoration of 20 of the 50 columns of the structure is underway, many of which contain paintings of Christian religious motifs. The next steps will include restoring the rest of the columns and the marble and floor tiles.

In addition to Brazil, Germany, Belgium, Chile, Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Poland, Russia, the Holy See and Turkey participate in the project, as well as Palestinian and foreign entities and companies and individuals of different nationalities.

Restauração da Basílica da Natividade

O governo brasileiro aprovou a doação de R$ 792 mil para a restauração da Basílica da Natividade, na cidade de Belém (Palestina). Construída a partir do século IV, para marcar o local do nascimento de Jesus, a basílica é visitada por aproximadamente 3 milhões de peregrinos e turistas anualmente.

Em 2008, o governo palestino e as três denominações cristãs presentes no edifício – greco-ortodoxa, armênia e católica romana – lançaram, em coordenação e sob a supervisão da Unesco, iniciativa de restauração do monumento. O projeto conta com auditoria internacional independente da empresa Deloitte & Touche.

O governo palestino e seus parceiros internacionais já arrecadaram US$ 10 milhões, cerca de metade dos recursos necessários para a restauração do edifício. Os recursos já permitiram a restauração de elementos como o teto, as janelas e diversas partes das fachadas. Encontra-se em andamento a restauração de 20 das 50 colunas da estrutura, muitas das quais contêm pinturas de motivos religiosos cristãos. As próximas etapas incluirão a restauração do restante das colunas e do mármore e dos mosaicos do piso.

Além do Brasil, participam do projeto Alemanha, Bélgica, Chile, Espanha, França, Grécia, Hungria, Itália, Marrocos, Polônia, Rússia, Santa Sé e Turquia, assim como entidades e empresas palestinas e estrangeiras e indivíduos de diversas nacionalidades.
