The State Museum of Contemporary Art is situated in the northeast wing of the Moni Lazariston complex, with a total area of 3,300 square meters.

The building was modified into a museum according to modern international standards. The exhibition halls of the museum permanently house part of the Costakis Collection, which alternates periodically.

Since the Summer of 2001, the museum ows another exhibition place at the Port of Thessaloniki, the Warehouse B1 which houses the Museum's periodical exhibitions as well as the exhibitions organized by the Center of Contemporary Art, the autonimous section of the SMCA.

In the future, Museum plans to change its residence, and move at the industrial building of YFANET.

Apart from the Costakis Collection, which includes 1.275 masterpieces of prominent Russian Avant Garde artists, the State Museum of Contemporary Art has in its possession a significant amount of paintings and sculptures of Greek and foreign artists (about 200), which were donated by the Thessaloniki Cultural Capital of Europe 1997 Organization.

Furthermore, the Museum possesses contemporary art works of distinguished artists, who wished to donate their works to the museum, mostly on the occasion of an exhibition, such as Chris Gianakos, Stylianos Antonakos but also independently of any event, such as works of G. Vacalo, donated by Cathleen Vacalo.
