Am 24. April 1990 startete vom Weltraumbahnhof Cape Kennedy an Bord der Raumfähre Discovery das Hubble-Weltraum-Teleskop, einen Tag später wurde es in eine Erdumlaufbahn ausgesetzt. Damit begann eine bis heute anhaltende 25-jährige Erfolgsgeschichte, die vor allem auch den Medien immer wieder beeindruckende Bilder lieferte. Dabei sahen die ersten Ergebnisse eher nach einer Pannengeschichte aus, ein Fertigungsfehler lieferte unscharfe Bilder.
Im Dezember 1993 konnte dieser Fehler in der ersten Reparaturmission von Astronauten in der Erdumlaufbahn behoben werden. Seitdem liefert das Hubble-Teleskop Bilder, die in ihrem Detailreichtum nicht nur die Wissenschaftlicher begeistern, sondern auch wegen ihrer außergewöhnlichen Ästhetik Einzug in zahlreiche populärwissenschaftliche Bücher gehalten haben. Findet man heute in einem Buch ein beeindruckende Fotos kosmischer Objekte, so ist die Wahrscheinlich recht hoch, dass sie vom Hubble-Weltraum-Teleskop stammen.
Das Planetarium im Vonderau Museum zeigt zum Jubiläum eine neu konzipierte Show, in welcher mit den Simulationsmöglichkeiten des Planetariums sowohl die Missionsgeschichte als auch beispielhaft beeindruckende Ergebnisse präsentiert werden. Erstmals wird diese Show am 25. April, d.h. exakt 25 Jahre nach dem Aussetzen in der Erdumlaufbahn gezeigt.

Über 300 000 Besucher besetzten in den vergangenen 25 Jahren die 35 Sitzplätze des Planetariums im Vonderau Museum, um eine der Planetariumsvorführungen zu erleben. Eröffnet wurde das Planetarium als erstes öffentliches Planetarium Hessens im Mai 1990, seither gehören seine jährlich über 500 Vorführungen zum Bestandteil astronomischer Bildung in Osthessen. Das Jubiläum feiert das Planetarium am letzten Wochenende im Mai mit dem Angebot zum kostenlosen Besuch von Kurzvorführungen.
Mit einer Kuppelgröße von sechs Metern und 35 Sitzplanetarium zählt das Planetarium in die Kategorie der Kleinplanetarien, seine Ausstattung steht den Möglichkeiten größerer Häuser aber kaum nach. Nach 16 Jahren Dauereinsatz wurden 2006 die Diaprojektoren außer Dienst gestellt und als erstes Kleinplanetarium Deutschlands erhielt das Fuldaer Planetarium eine die gesamte Kuppel erfassende computergesteuerte Videoprojektionsanlage, der Sternprojektor der Firma Zeiss blieb nach Modernisierungen bis heute zuverlässig in Betrieb.
Auch in der Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Planetarien im deutschsprachigen Raum wurden in Fulda Akzente gesetzt. Die erste gesamtdeutsche Tagung der Kleinplanetarien fand in Fulda statt, hier wurde die Idee zum Austausch von Kinderprogrammen zwischen den deutschsprachigen Planetarien geboren, die sich später in andere Sparten erweiterte und heute dem Fuldaer Planetarium ermöglicht, von aufwendigen Gemeinschaftsproduktionen deutscher Planetarien zu profitieren.
Wenngleich die behandelten Themen bis zur Evolutionstheorie Darwins anhand von Orchideen reichen und literarische und musikalische Veranstaltungen zum Repertoire gehören, steht bedingt durch die enge personelle Verzahnung mit der Fuldaer Hans-Nüchter-Sternwarte die Astronomie, insbesondere der Sternhimmel im Zentrum der meisten Vorführungen. Mit der Anerkennung des Sternenparks Rhön in Jahr 2014 wächst die Bedeutung dieses Aspektes, da Fulda eines der beiden in der unmittelbaren Umgebung der Rhön liegenden Planetarien besitzt.
Eine Besonderheit in Fulda sind die oft recht jungen Vorführer, die meist von der Astronomie-Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Hans-Nüchter-Sternwarte stammen und bis ins Studentenalter ins Referentenleben hineinwachsen. Einige dieser Vorführer waren auch nach ihrem ausbildungsbedingten Weggang aus Fulda weiterhin im Planetariumsbereich tätig.

Foi inaugurado como o primeiro planetário público Planetarium Hesse em maio de 1990, desde então incluem os seus mais de 500 seleções anuais para parte da educação astronômico em Hesse.
