Among the many museums that a visitor can get to seeing in the sultanate of Oman the Children’s Museum Oman is an extremely interesting place, not just for children, but for their parents and care takers too.
Officially thrown open to the public in the year 1990 on the 20th National day of the country, by Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said, this museum close to the Qurum Nature Park is placed inside two spectacular buildings shaped like domes and is found at the foot of the hill where Mumtaz Mahal / Left bank are situated. In spite of the fact that it is a children’s museum, this museum is believed to have over fifty thousand visitors every year. Typically this is a science museum that occupies about ten thousand square feet of space and has about forty five exhibits and two demonstrations.
Managed and run by an ex-school teacher Samirah Ahmed al Raisi since the past six years, there are ever so many objects of interest inside the Children’s Museum like communicative scientific displays that are designed for kids who are in the age group of between six and twelve. Nevertheless even kids who are younger have plenty of fun engaging themselves with the varied exhibits though they are not old enough to comprehend the concepts that are demonstrated. In fact the museum is segregated into three sections namely the human life, physics and act of observing and understanding through investigative ventures how science seems to have progressed over the years.
The most intriguing part of these exhibits are that many of them are ones where the children participate in hands-on learning activities like how one learns to change gears with the help of moveable cogs, the feeling of a false electric shock, how a bolt of lightening can be triggered, the method of setting off a hot air balloon, taking photographs of one’s own shadow and passing messages via the whispering Dish.
In fact the Whispering Dishes are something that children are taken in by. These dishes are placed pretty far apart, yet when someone whispers into one of them the other person at the other dish can hear what was said very clearly. The property of the reflectors in the dishes here explain that all sounds starting from a focal point are so reflected that they move on parallel paths and reach the other dishes, though they cannot be heard by the naked ear.
One also finds a variety of optical illusions that deceive the children’ into viewing things differently. As well as there are so many things that teach the child different facets of physics like weight, speed, pressure force and reaction time.
Most children who visit the Children’s Museum are enamoured of the life sized human skeleton and a human body that has all the internal parts that are moveable such that the children learn where exactly the different organs of the body are found. Kids get to inspect a lot of things under a microscope. There is also a mirror that reflects the pattern of stars and the child is required to look into the mirror and with the help of a pointer trace between the stars. If he happens to touch any of the sides there is a beep to show failure.
Managed and run by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture the Children’s Museum, Oman is open form 9.30 am to 1.30 pm Wednesdays through Saturdays and from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm on Saturdays.
