Han transcurrido más de tres décadas desde que Sergio Larraín García-Moreno y la Ilustre Municipalidad de Santiago, fundaron el Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino. Fue una iniciativa pionera para Latinoamérica el crear una institución que custodiara, estudiara y divulgara el legado artístico de todos los pueblos precolombinos de América, sin tomar en cuenta las fronteras políticas que hoy dividen a sus países.
CHILE ANTES DE CHILE
Durante la década de 1970, Sergio Larraín García-Moreno va tomando conciencia de la importancia que ha adquirido su colección y de la urgencia de preocuparse por su mantención íntegra y permanente,con un resguardo institucional más allá de las contingencias. Entonces, inicia conversaciones con entidades universitarias y estatales con la intención de hacer una donación para que la colección se exhiba, se conserve y acreciente. Después de algunos intentos, encuentra una respuesta entusiasta en el Alcalde de Santiago, Patricio Mekis, quien acoge la idea y comienza a trabajar para encontrar un inmueble que cobije a la institución.
Paralelamente, Sergio Larraín encarga al abogado Julio Philippi I. un modelo legal que sirviera para dar nacimiento a una institución estable, que cautelara los objetos, velara por su integridad y les diera un destino bajo las orientaciones y principios fundadores. Surge de este modo la Fundación Familia Larraín Echenique, bautizada así como una forma de manifestar que eran sus herederos, y no el mismo coleccionista, quienes hacían donación de las colecciones para crear y mantener un museo orientado a su cuidado, estudio y difusión.
De esta manera, mediante un convenio entre la Fundación y la Ilustre Municipalidad de Santiago, quien aporta el edificio y los gastos generales de administración, en diciembre de 1981 abre sus puertas al público el Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino.
