The permanent collection of the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is comprised of 850 textiles, including historic quilts, contemporary art quilts, and textile-based art forms, as well as costumes and garments from world cultures. Formed in 1977, the Museum’s collection has gained distinction for its’ unique art and material culture collection both locally and nationally. An indexed library of reference books and related periodicals, available to researchers by appointment, also supports the permanent collection.
Recent additions to the collection include two mid-twentieth century tapestry works designed by Mark Adams, donated by Henry and Judy Wagner of Novato, CA., and an important group of woven tapestries from Ruth Dundas. The Dundas Collection features twelve tapestries, with works from the San Francisco Tapestry Workshop (1977-1981), The Scheuer Tapestry Studio (1982-91), and original works by Dundas. The P&B Textiles’ Collection, comprised of twenty-four contemporary and two historical quilts have also been accepted into the permanent collection. These were donated to the museum in honor of P&B’s founder, and former Museum Board member, the late Irwin Bear.
A key objective of the collection is to recognize and promote an understanding of the central role played by Bay Area artists in the quilting and textile arts revival during the second half of the twentieth century—a movement that continues today. The collection currently holds signature pieces by nationally recognized artists local to the area – Katherine Westphal, Lillian Elliot, Terese May, Marian Clayden, Ed Rossbach, Charlotte Patera, Linda Gass, Joan Schulze, Yvonne Porcella, to name a few – and we anticipate strengthening this important aspect of the collection.
Central to its mission to promote the art, craft, and history of quilts and textiles, the Museum continues to grow its holdings of historical quilts and textiles from world cultures. San Jose and the greater Bay Area include people from the Hispanic, Latino, Vietnamese and Chinese cultures, and each of these cultures has a rich history based in textile traditions. The Museum is committed to preserving world textile traditions as well as contemporary trends in textile arts.
Collections work has been generously supported by an American Association of Museum’s MAP Assessment, which laid the groundwork for the development of the current Collection Management Policy. A National Endowment for the Humanities Collections Preservation Assessment was completed in 2012, with additional funds provided by the J.W. & H.M. Goodman Family Charitable Foundation.
