Dialeto russo falado nos rincões do Brasil. --- The ancient Russian dialect spoken in the far corners of Brazil. ---

Eles escolheram a segunda opção.

E então ele começou a migração interna.

The ancient Russian dialect spoken in the far corners of Brazil

In an interview, the dialetóloga Olga Rovnova, the Institute of Russian Language Vinogradov, belonging to the Russian Academy of Sciences, talks about customs of a group of believers who, to preserve their beliefs and traditions, traveled over 300 years of Siberian territories and the Far East to America, from Alaska to Brazil.

They fled Russia in the 17th century, suffered repression from the authorities, promoted celibacy and church sacraments and finally created many churches. Contrary to the practices of the Orthodox Church introduced at that time, these characters known as "starovéri" ( "old faithful" in Portuguese) represented the driving force of Russian capitalism in the early 20th century and survive to the present day.

The language spoken outside Russia remained the same or was it changed?

There are two types of spoken Russian language abroad: the standard and the dialects. The default, when separated from the metropolises, retains all of its properties and stays the same language, but also come into it new phenomena, usually lexicons. New words are usually related to the realities of the countries where the language is spoken.

And the dialect?

If we refer specifically to Russia, it is the language of the people, which continues to be used in the interiors of the country. If we speak of Russian abroad, it is mainly the language of the ancient faithful who emigrated in ways and in different Russian times to the countries where they live, such as Poland, Romania, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay, USA, Canada and Australia.

As these faithful came to South America?

Those who ended up in Latin America were former believers in the regions of Nizhny Novgorod and Vladimir. Because of persecution in the early 18th century, they were resettled in different parts of Siberia and the Far East. Then, those who managed to save the Soviet power in the late 1920s, fled to China. Some of them moved from the far east to Manchuria, through the Amur River. Other party traveled from Kazakhstan to Xinjiang [Sinkiang]. These groups did not maintain contact or knew of each other.

How long they lived in China?

By the late 1950s, when, during the Chinese revolution, began to emerge kolkhoz [collective farms]. And as I knew the system and knew what was the Soviet power, would not enter the collective farms.

The Chinese government, which was all very well - and I can say that all seniors remind China with great tenderness and love and follow closely the developments in the country - proposed to them that they chose to stay and accept all the conditions of life political and economic or leave. They chose the second option.

Unlike escape from Russia, this time it was an organized resettlement involving the United Nations, the Red Cross and many non-profit organization. Two South American countries were willing to accept them: Brazil and Chile. But in Chile there was an earthquake, and the country has been replaced by Argentina. Most of them went to Brazil. And then he began to internal migration.

How was the life of emigrants in South America?

At first it was very difficult. In Brazil, the land is red and the blanket is too thin, just five centimeters. The old faithful say that when they talked a local agronomist and asked, "What can we grow here?" He said in the land could not grow anything and it was necessary to fertilize a lot, so it is said that the earth is covered tears and sweat of Russian old believers. Now, residents of the State of Paraná is proud to say that this is "our Brazilian-Russian land."

In the mid-1960s most of them emigrated to the US. Because?

Mainly for economic reasons. The faithful had large families, children that "God send them," as they said, and these new kids needed space. And at that time the land in the US was sold at a low price. If I'm not mistaken, about $ 20 per hectare.

What languages do they speak the old faithful in South America?

They speak the dialects in which became the language of the ancient faithful over the past 300 years. The language has changed a lot, obviously, since its base was influenced throughout road traveled and the places where they found other dialects and other languages.

Is there a difference between the dialects spoken in various parts of the continent?

The Russian language has a regional variation. In different territories speaking the same language, but there are still things that are different. I refer to both the literary language and the dialects. It would be very interesting to see if there are new differences between the Russian spoken in Bolivia and Brazil.

I have noticed one thing: in the dialect of the faithful of Bolivia appeared a new word. They live surrounded by indigenous tribes, one of which is called "colla". They call it "Kolya". Thus, "kolya" means Indian and "kolintsi" are the Indians, with their own language "Kolinski." "You talk Kolinski?" He asks himself. But, generally, the dialect is the same in all parts of Latin America, where the old faithful live.

Rovnova
