A cerimônia terá início às 16h30 e contará com a presença da Reitora, Maria Lucia Cavalli Neder. Durante toda a semana haverá programação especial. Além da reforma do espaço anterior, o ambiente físico foi ampliado.
Criada em dezembro de 1970, a UFMT carregou, desde sua fundação, a alcunha de Universidade da Selva. Erguida no marco zero da rodovia Cuiabá-Santarém, a universidade foi pensada como parte de um conjunto de instalações vinculadas às políticas de integração da Amazônia, devendo contribuir com os planos de ocupação do Centro-Oeste.
A criação da universidade da selva, na perspectiva desenvolvimentista imposta na época pela ditadura militar, impunha igualmente um olhar aos que habitavam a selva, ou seja, os povos indígenas. A necessidade de imediata criação de um centro da reflexão e de ação indigenista foi tomada como motivação para criação, em 30 de junho de 1972, do Museu Rondon, inaugurado em 08 de janeiro de 1973.
Dentre as competências iniciais do museu estava a pesquisa objetivando melhorias para população indígena, a coleta e exposição de acervo correlacionado e fazer do museu um centro de estudos dinâmico para servir a Universidade e da Comunidade. Portanto, em sua criação, o museu apresentava princípios de atuação voltados ao ensino, à pesquisa e à extensão, ou seja, compromissos de um museu universitário.
Em sua fundação o museu contou com a colaboração de diversas personalidades e instituições que atuavam no indigenismo da época: Orlando Villas Boas, João Américo Peret e Apoena Meireles, Missão Anchieta, dentre outros. Estes eram vinculados ao museu como pesquisadores e foram os primeiros donatários de bens materiais que ainda fazem parte do acervo do Museu Rondon de Etnologia e Arqueologia.
A criação do museu acontece no contexto das políticas indigenistas da época, que estava sob o comando da Fundação Nacional do Índio (FUNAI) após a extinção do Serviço de Proteção ao Índio (SPI) em 1967, fundado pelo Marechal Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon em 1910, cujo objetivo principal era o de promover a integração dos povos indígenas à comunhão nacional, ou seja, promover o apagamento da diversidade étnica e cultural, tornando-os trabalhadores rurais, guardiões das fronteiras e mão de obra na instalação e manutenção das Linhas Telegráficas e Estratégicas de Mato Grosso ao Amazonas.
Vinculado ao Instituto de Ciências Humanas e Sociais e administrado pelo Departamento de Antropologia, o Museu Rondon de Etnologia e Arqueologia atualmente apresenta um caráter dinâmico, interessado no estudo sobre o patrimônio cultural dos povos indígenas, na arqueologia e na construção de saberes nas áreas de cultura popular. Seu objetivo não é apenas produzir exposições sobre a cultura material dos povos indígenas, mas também valorizar a importância do conhecimento sobre a diversidade sociocultural e a capacidade que estas sociedades têm de criar e recriar sua cultura. O museu configura-se como um importante centro de divulgação, valorização e respeito da diversidade étnica e cultural do estado de Mato Grosso e do país, contribuindo assim para romper com estereótipos e preconceitos em relação dos povos indígenas.
A programação de reabertura contará com a fala das autoridades, descerramento de placas, abertura da exposição de longa duração, coquetel e apresentação cultural dos cantos e danças do povo xavante. Durante a semana, haverá abertura de exposição, conferência, apresentações culturais, palestras e a recolocação da estátua de Marechal Rondon.
