Iraqi forces committed to ousting the Islamic state west of the city of Mosul have now recaptured the main government building, the central headquarters of the central bank, and the museum where militants destroyed statues and artefacts three years ago.

Reuters writes that government buildings had been destroyed and were not used by the Islamic state, but their capture represented a symbolic victory in the battle against the last great bastion of radical militants in Iraq.

The elite Rapid Reaction unit has advanced over the government building and Nineveh government complex in an operation from Monday to Tuesday, a spokesman for the unit, Lieutenant Colonel Abdel Amir al-Mohammadawi, said.

The team also took a building housing the main Islamic state court, known for severe punishments such as stoning, firing people from the roof of buildings and cutting off their hands, a reflection of the extreme ideology of the group.

Iraque: Forças governamentais recapturam prédios do governo e museu em Mosul.

Forças do Iraque empenhadas em expulsar o Estado Islâmico do oeste da cidade de Mosul recapturaram hoje o principal edifício do governo, a sede local do Banco Central, e o museu onde os militantes destruíram estátuas e artefactos três anos atrás.

A Reuters escreve que os prédios do governo haviam sido destruídos e não eram usados pelo Estado Islâmico, mas a sua captura representou uma vitória simbólica na batalha contra o último grande bastião dos militantes radicais no Iraque.

A unidade de elite Reação Rápida avançou sobre o prédio do governo e o complexo governamental de Nínive numa operação ocorrida de segunda para terça-feira, disse o porta-voz da unidade, tenente-coronel Abdel Amir al-Mohammadawi.

A equipa também tomou um edifício que abrigava o principal tribunal do Estado Islâmico, conhecido por penas severas como apedrejamentos, atirar pessoas do tecto de prédios e cortar as suas mãos, um reflexo da ideologia extrema do grupo.
