Normally associated with Argentina, Carlos Gardel has one foot on the opposite side of the River Plate. At least that is what the Uruguayans defend. And this relationship has just gotten stronger with the inauguration of a new museum in Montevideo, dedicated to the most famous tango singer.
The space is in Villa Yeruá de la Rambla y Rimac, the house where the artist used to spend seasons, in the neighborhood of Malvín. The building, typical of the 1920s, houses two museums: one dedicated to Gardel and another to the turf, since the owner of the property, Francisco Maschio, was an impotent horse racing coach.
The relationship between Gardel and Maschio was so close that the singer, in addition to entrusting his animals to the coach, spent many of his birthdays in Malvín, at that time a beach resort full of dunes, away from the center of the capital of Uruguay.
At the entrance, the visitor is faced with a life-size statue of the singer - the third in his honor in Montevideo - and another representing Irineo Leguisamo, a famous jockey who had a room in the house and trained with Maschio's horses.
In the interior, original photographs, some of them unpublished, show the life and the work of Gardel, and its relation with the horse races. A subject that, not by chance, inspired classics immortalized in his voice, like "Por una cabeza" and "Leguisamo solo".

Admission is free and the venue is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays and holidays from 12am to 6pm.
Museums in Buenos Aires and Tacuarembó
Montevideo still did not have a space dedicated to Gardel. Unlike Tacuarembó, in the north of the country, where the singer was born in 1887, according to some researchers. The Carlos Gardel Museum is located in a small stone house in Valle Eden, in the rural area of the city, which would have witnessed the first moments of the artist's life, the result of a relationship between a local colonel and a teenage maid.
For those who believe that Gardel was born in Toulouse, France, and emigrated to Buenos Aires, there is the Casa Museo Carlos Gardel, where the singer lived with his mother as a child in the Abasto neighborhood in the Argentine capital.

Normalmente associado à Argentina, Carlos Gardel tem um pé no lado oposto do Rio da Prata. Ao menos é o que defendem os uruguaios. E essa relação acaba de ficar mais forte com a inauguração de um novo museu em Montevidéu, dedicado ao mais famoso cantor de tango.
O espaço fica na Villa Yeruá de la Rambla y Rimac, a casa onde o artista costumava passar temporadas, no bairro de Malvín. A a construção, típica dos anos 1920, abriga dois museus: um dedicado a Gardel e outro ao turfe, já que o proprietário do imóvel, Francisco Maschio, era um impotante treinador de cavalos de corridas.
A relação entre Gardel e o Maschio era tão próxima que o cantor, alem de confiar seus animais ao treinador, passou muitos de seus aniversários em Malvín, à época um balneário cheio de dunas, afastado do centro da capital do Uruguai.
Logo na entrada, o visitante se depara com uma estátua em tamanho real do cantor - a terceira em sua homenagem em Montevidéu - e outra representando Irineo Leguisamo, famoso jóquei que tinha um quarto na casa e treinava com os cavalos de Maschio.
No interior, fotografias originais, algumas delas inéditas, mostram a vida e a obra de Gardel, e sua relação com as corridas de cavalo. Um assunto que, não por acaso, inspirou clássicos imortalizados em sua voz, como "Por una cabeza" e "Leguisamo solo".
A entrada é gratuita e o local está aberto de terça a sábado das 10h às 17h e domingos e feriados das 12h às 18h.
Museus em Buenos Aires e Tacuarembó
Montevidéu ainda não tinha um espaço dedicado a Gardel. Ao contrário de Tacuarembó, no norte do país, onde o cantor teria nascido, em 1887, segundo alguns pesquisadores. O Museo Carlos Gardel fica em uma pequena casa de pedra em Valle Éden, na zona rural da cidade, que teria sido testemunha dos primeiros momentos da vida do artista, fruto de um relacionamento de um coronel da região com uma criada adolescente.
Para quem acredita que Gardel nasceu em Toulouse, na França, e de la emigrou para Buenos Aires, há a Casa Museo Carlos Gardel, onde o cantor morou com sua mãe na infância, no bairro de Abasto, na capital argentina.
