Art exhibit shows off the beauty of data.

The Art of Analytics project visualizes complex datasets as works of art.

In her day-to-day work, Yasmeen Ahmad tackles immensely complex datasets, deploying an arsenal of approaches and methodologies that would sound intimidating to most lay people.

From predictive modelling to text analytics, time series analysis to development of attribution strategies, few people can easily wrap their heads around what such terms mean, and even fewer are capable of drawing actionable insights from them – which is why data scientists such as herself are always in such high demand.

Ahmad worked in the life sciences industry before pivoting to commercial work, where she is now Director of Think Big Analytics, the consulting branch of IT service management company Teradata.

Over many years helping clients across a variety of industries to make sense of their data, however, she realised that the best way help them see meaning in those datasets was to literally paint them a picture.

Visualisation is a core component of any data science and analytical project,” she explains. “It is almost always used at the beginning to understand the datasets you are working with, and can help to quickly identify anomalies, outliers and strong correlations in the data.

As far as data is concerned, she says, a picture really is worth a thousand words, as visualisation helps to add meaning on top of data that is much easier to assimilate for humans than descriptive words or single numbers and values alone.

Her team would therefore routinely include such visuals when they presented their key results to clients, and found that even people who might not be well versed in data science or technology could still connect with them. The visualisations supported storytelling around a project, engaging business stakeholders to understand connections, relationships and associations in the data.

As more investment goes into data platforms and analytical technologies, the artwork helps to provide a face to this investment. We had business leaders commenting on how beautiful the visualisations were. Colour, shape and layout were all dimensions that were used to convey meaning. The choice of how a visualisation was formed is actually a creative process – like creating a piece of art.

From there, she explains, it was a short leap to the idea behind the Art of Analytics project, which brings together a range of those visualisation pieces from their previous projects.

Ahmad believes one of the main strengths of the project is its ability to bring data to life for lay audiences, creating a connection between data insights and observers and bridging the technical gap.

The visualisations push the human to look beyond individual numbers and values, to thinking about data as a series of connections to be explored. They make it particularly easy to see associations, connections, pathways etc. The art is providing form to the complex fields of big data and data science – making them accessible to a wider audience.

Yet the usefulness of data visualisation is not limited to non-technical people. According to Ahmad, it is also a key component of a data scientist’s toolkit:

During my life sciences research – I was working in a field where everything was abstracted. The data I analysed often came from human cell samples that could only be seen under microscopes. Hence, collecting data about these samples, analysing it to create insight and then relating the insight back to reality was somewhat difficult. Visualisation was key to help portray not only the insights, but also how they linked to human cells and biology in general.

Art of Analytics was also an opportunity for Ahmad to bring together those creative and scientific sides. Data science, she says, is actually a highly creative discipline that combines technical know-how with lateral thinking and the ability to tease out stories from complex datasets.

I believe that art and science need to come together to help to solve the world’s most complex problems, and the best data scientists are not only great at statistics, maths and analytical subjects, but are also creative problem solvers who can translate their work into meaningful messaging that connects with their business and commercial audiences.

This is an on-going project, and there are plans to create new data representations as they work with new datasets they haven’t encountered before.

Ahmad is also keen to explore how other media such as animation, video and perhaps even VR could help add other dimensions to that work. By creating a video, she says, it would be possible to create another level of emotional connection with audiences, by representing how those relationships have evolved over time.

We have had senior executives request copies of the Art of Analytics to hang in their office. The emotional connection that people can establish with the work highlights the power of data.

Yves Saint Laurent: As a designer changed fashion forever - According to Flaviano, Saint Laurent decided to file his work for the first time in 1962.

"I talked to Bergé about it, and he told me it all started when Saint Laurent was so fond of a brown party dress that he decided to keep it."

image 1
Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech was bought by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 1980

"Over the years, he got more and more pieces. Initially, they were kept in chests, since in the 1960s there was no idea of having a space to store the clothes properly," he explains.

From the 1980s, Saint Laurent adopted the custom of writing the word "museum" or simply "m" to show that he wanted to file certain items. And, from 1997, the pieces were stored in a special warehouse in the Parisian suburb of La Villette.

Decades after Yves Saint Laurent opened his atelier in 1961, his work still arouses fascination.

Two films about the stylist born in Algeria, but naturalized French, were launched in 2014.

And the recent death of his partner and husband, Pierre Bergé, brought back his incredible legacy.

In order to get an idea of the passions that the stylist arouses, there was protest in 2012, when the label decided to abbreviate its name to 'Saint Laurent'.

The Parisian store Colette, for example, has launched a line of shirts with the slogan "It's not Laurent without Yves".

Museums

The life and work of Saint Laurent was immortalized by the opening of two museums in October. One of them in the French capital - the Yves Saint Laurent Museum -, located in the same building where the stylist's house worked from 1974 to 2002.

The other? It's in Morocco. More precisely in Marrakech, in a new building, with 4 thousand square meters of area, very close to the Jardin Majorelle, bought by the couple in 1980.

Saint Laurent, whose career began under the tutelage of Christian Dior, another fashion icon, was the first stylist to systematically file his work, which gave the museums a rich collection for the exhibition.

The institution in Paris, for example, has more than 5 thousand pieces of clothing, 15 thousand accessories and thousands of drawings, fabric samples and videos of parades.

"Our idea is to give visitors an understanding of the creative process behind the design of a piece," explains Olivier Flaviano, director of the museum.

All about Yves

image 4

The museum also offers a more personal look on the life of the stylist.

It presents photos of him with Bergé and images of his houses, which always attracted almost as much attention as the costumes.

The original Saint Laurent's studio was meticulously re-created. "We have the table where he worked, for example," explains Flaviano.

"Other objects include a pair of bronze lions that Saint-Laurent, very superstitious, bought because his sign was Leo. There are pictures of his dogs and a cane used by Dior."

The first exhibition in Paris depicts the collection launched by Saint Laurent in 1962. In that year, the stylist presented a coat-hanger model that used to be used by European sailors to cope with the low temperatures on the high seas.

This is one example of one of her coolest ideas - the incorporation of men's clothing into the women's wardrobe.

image 3
Sketches, like the ones designed for a 1962 collection, can be seen at the exhibition in Paris

The exhibition space was set up by the set designer Nathalie Crinière and the decorator Jacques Grange, who signed the eclectic and avant-garde decoration in the 1970s of one of the apartments of Saint Laurent and Bergé in Paris.

The museum in Marrakech has a thousand pieces created by the designer, loaned from the foundation in Paris, which are part of a permanent exhibition idealized by the set designer Christophe Martin. There is also a library with books on the history of art and Morocco, an auditorium for lectures and a café.

The building has no windows, but the project was not made by chance by the French architecture office Studio KO. According to the Swedish museum director Björn Dahlström, it is a way to mitigate the effects of the heat on the museum's collection.

"There are no windows to protect clothes from the direct incidence of sunlight," he explains.

"In Marrakech, the temperature difference between day and night is great, the ambient temperature should be between 20 ° C and 25 ° C."

Morocco, source of inspiration

Paris and Marrakech are appropriate locations for museums on Saint Laurent. He spent most of his life between the two cities.

In 1966, the designer met Marrakesh, which became a refuge from the troubled and disciplined life he had in the French capital.

It was in the Moroccan city, for example, that Saint Laurent decided in the late 1960s to let his hair grow and make fun with friends, smoking marijuana and wearing Indian robes.

"In Morocco, I discovered a variety of colors in mosaics, paintings and local clothing. I owe this country the daring of my work, to its audacious combinations," he once said.

Vanguard and rebellion

This was also the beginning of the stylist's obsession in the 1970s, with more sumptuous costumes from exotic countries and inspiring some of his most iconic collections - one about Russia (1976), influenced by Cossack themes (people living in the steppes from Eastern Europe), and another on China (1977), which featured lacquered hats and shoulder pads inspired by pagodas.

What today seems retrograde was extremely rebellious and avant-garde at the time. At the Dior house, for example, Saint Laurent disregarded the "hourglass pattern", which was used by stylists, in 1958 when he created a trapeze dress. In 1960, his last collection by Dior was dominated by black.

In 1966, it was the turn to present a "tuxedo unisex," designed to help women break free of gender stereotypes in clothing. It was that same year that Saint Laurent became the first designer to launch a pret-a-porter collection.

He also sought inspiration from the student protests that rocked Paris in 1968 and, posing naked as part of his first perfume advertising campaign in 1971, made a statement about sexual liberation.

Part of the appeal that the stylist has today is also due to partnerships with style icons, such as Paloma Picasso, who produced accessories for his label, as well as the British model Loulou de la Falaise, his muse.

Depression and shyness

Saint Laurent was shy and suffering from depression, but he had unshakable self-confidence and believed that his work should be preserved for posterity. Perhaps it was a reflection of his passion for the arts - he and Bergé had an impressive collection. And his designs were often inspired by artists - which made the stylist believe that his work extrapolated the frontiers of fashion.

Bergé was the one who promoted her husband. His idea was the retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (1983), for example. He also invited leading literary writers, such as Marguerite Duras and Bernard Henri-Levy, to write about Saint Laurent, which earned the stylist intellectual status.
The two museums now represent the pinnacle of this ambition.

O outro? Fica no Marrocos.

A cultura e o amor devem estar juntos.
Vamos compartilhar.

Culture is not what enters the eyes and ears,
but what modifies the way of looking and hearing.
